Sicario 3 is moving forward, according to a report by TheWrap published October 5, 2026. The reported package has Steven Knight writing the screenplay, Padraic McKinley directing, and Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro returning. Production is slated to begin in early 2027, but the report does not identify a distributor or release date—and the project has not been established as the subject of a studio announcement.
What is currently reported for Sicario 3?
TheWrap says Black Label Media and Thunder Road are moving the third film forward. Its report names McKinley as director and Knight as screenwriter, with Blunt, Brolin, and del Toro expected to return. Blunt did not appear in the second film, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. TheWrap says plot details have not been revealed. TheWrap’s October 5, 2026 report attributes the news to its own sourcing; it is trade reporting, not a studio press release.

The reported producers are Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill for Black Label Media, and Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road. Ed McDonnell is also named as a producer.
Is Taylor Sheridan writing Sicario 3?
TheWrap attributes the current screenplay to Steven Knight, not Sheridan. Sheridan wrote the first two films, so the change concerns the writer attached to this reported version of the third film. It does not establish that Sheridan has no other involvement: TheWrap does not describe every possible producer, story, or consulting role.

TheWrap also reports that earlier drafts were attempted by other writers, naming Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen on a prior draft. Those earlier writing efforts do not change the outlet’s attribution of the current screenplay to Knight.
When does filming start, and when will the movie be released?
Production is slated to begin in early 2027, according to TheWrap. The report says the producers plan to shop the film to potential studios. It names no distributor and gives no release date, so neither a theatrical date nor a streaming destination is established.

Why do reports about the project differ?
The status became more specific over time. On August 24, 2026, The Independent reported that Brolin said the film “is happening” and production would begin “soon.” At that point, the outlet said no director or cast had been announced and Sheridan’s return as writer was unconfirmed. That was an earlier account, not a contradiction of the later details as of October 5. The Independent’s August 24 report also reproduced a 2016 comment from second-film director Stefano Sollima about an anthology approach. That historical concept is not confirmation of the current film’s plot.
A Production List entry last updated October 6, 2026 still lists Sheridan as writer and names no director. The entry conflicts with TheWrap’s more detailed October 5 report; the reason for the difference is not established. It is best read as a dated tracker listing rather than evidence that supersedes the current reported package.
