If you operate HFS, identify its version and update any release earlier than 3.2.1; use the official HFS releases page to check the current stable version.
What is happening with Rejetto HFS?
BleepingComputer reported on October 5, 2026, that VulnCheck Canary Intelligence had observed probes against HFS deployments in Japan and the United States. The report characterized the activity as small-scale reconnaissance from one China Telecom IP. Separately, VulnCheck said its honeypots began observing exploitation activity on October 1. These are attributed observations, not evidence that every probe succeeded or that any particular HFS server was compromised. BleepingComputer’s report and VulnCheck’s October 2 report describe the activity.

VulnCheck estimated that roughly 100 HFS instances were internet-facing. That is the estimate in its October 2 report, not a confirmed count of vulnerable or compromised servers.
How CVE-2026-61500 can lead to remote code execution
The reported flaw affects session-cookie signing in the HFS 3.x line. According to the available security reporting, a remote unauthenticated attacker may be able to forge a session with administrator privileges and then use server-side HFS functionality to execute code. The technical details here are attributed to the reporting and VulnCheck; a direct Rejetto advisory with a full technical description was not identified.
#1 Best Overall
Remote code execution means an attacker could run commands or code on the server, potentially turning a file-sharing service into a foothold on the host. The reporting describes an attack path, not proof that this outcome occurred on every targeted server.
Which HFS versions are affected, and what fixes the flaw?
Versions earlier than 3.2.1 are reported affected, and HFS 3.2.1 is reported to contain the fix. At the time the project page was checked, the official releases page listed 3.3.4 as the latest release. Release status can change, so check the project page and its notes before upgrading.

- Durable Carbon Steel: Rack mount screws and cage nuts are made of high-quality carbon steel with a black finish for high strength and dependable durability.
- Easy Installation: Clear metric threads and uniform pitch for better grip. Nylon washers help secure screws and protect equipment surfaces.
- Organized Storage: All parts are packed in a portable storage box for easy organization and access.
- Wide Compatibility: Fits most square-hole racks and cabinets—ideal for server racks, network cabinets, equipment enclosures, and A/V gear.
- 20-Set Kit: Includes 20 mounting screws with nylon washers (M6 x 20 mm) and 20 square cage nuts—40 pieces in total—meeting daily install and replacement needs.
Do not confuse this issue with CVE-2024-23692. That older vulnerability affected HFS through 2.3m and involved unauthenticated template injection leading to arbitrary command execution; the GitHub Advisory Database says that release is unsupported. It is a distinct issue in the older 2.x line, not another name for CVE-2026-61500. See the GitHub Advisory Database entry for CVE-2024-23692.
What HFS operators should do now
- Find every installation. Inventory internet-facing servers, internal deployments and forgotten instances. Include systems run outside the main IT inventory if your organization has decentralized administration.
- Check the running version. Verify the version on each HFS instance rather than inferring it from the operating system, installation date or an assumption that updates were applied.
- Update vulnerable instances. Upgrade versions earlier than 3.2.1, following the project’s current release notes and using its official releases page to select the current stable release.
- Review exposed systems for signs of unauthorized activity. If a server was reachable from the internet while running a vulnerable version, review relevant logs and unexpected administrative changes under your organization’s incident-response process. A probe alone does not establish that the server was compromised.
What the reports do—and do not—establish
The reports describe observed probing and exploitation activity, but they do not establish broad, indiscriminate exploitation or confirm successful compromise of a specific victim. Treat the activity as a reason to prioritize version checks and patching, not as a standalone incident finding.
Rank #3
The key distinction is operational: a vulnerable version that was exposed warrants prompt remediation and review; an observation that attackers scanned HFS does not, by itself, show that an individual installation was reached or breached.
