Choose .si if Slovenia is your website’s main market; choose .com if you need a broadly usable domain for several countries or an international audience. Google treats .si as a country-code domain that signals a connection to Slovenia, while .com is generic. That distinction can help clarify a site’s intended audience, but neither extension guarantees better rankings.

How to choose between .si and .com

Factor .si .com
Best fit A business, organization, or site whose primary audience is in Slovenia. A broad international audience or a site serving multiple countries.
Google’s geographic signal A country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) that signals the site is intended for Slovenia. A generic top-level domain (gTLD), not associated with a particular country.
Serving multiple markets Clearly associated with one country; reaching other markets may call for additional domains or another site structure. Can serve several markets from one generic domain, using localized URLs such as subdirectories or subdomains.
Operational considerations Country-specific domains may have limited availability, cost more, require more infrastructure, and be limited to one country, according to Google. Google describes localized subdirectories as lower-maintenance in some respects and subdomains as easier to set up, with trade-offs in separation and recognition.

What .si and .com mean for SEO

Google describes ccTLDs as a strong signal to users and search engines that a site is intended for the associated country. It classifies .com as generic, so a .com site targeting Slovenia should make its intended audience clear through other localization signals. Google’s guidance for managing multi-regional and multilingual sites explains these distinctions.

This is a signal about intended geography, not a promise of a ranking boost. Google cautions that geotargeting is not exact, so clear navigation between regional versions can help visitors who arrive on the wrong one. The choice of extension should follow the markets you intend to serve, not an assumption that one suffix will automatically rank higher.

How a .com site can target Slovenia and other markets

A generic domain can still serve country-specific audiences. Google recommends making regional or language versions explicit through localized URLs, links among versions, and hreflang annotations where appropriate. For example, a business might organize its Slovenian pages in a locale-specific URL structure and link them to the corresponding versions for other markets.

Plan the structure around the content you can maintain: a generic domain allows one domain to serve multiple markets, while separate country-specific domains can make each country association more obvious but add operational complexity. Provide navigation so visitors can reach the right language or regional version.

Who manages .si, and what to check before registering

.si is Slovenia’s ccTLD. ICANN’s .si delegation record identifies the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES) as its manager and points to registry.si for registration services. ICANN notes that ccTLD requirements vary, so check the current .si registration information rather than assuming rules from another country’s domain apply.

The .si registry’s general terms govern the relationship among ARNES, registrars, and domain holders. They state that a registration period ends on the same day of the month as the registration date. Before buying, confirm the specific registrar’s current availability, price and renewal price, DNS and email features, and contact-data requirements. Those details depend on the provider and are not established by the registry’s general terms.
