The profile supplies the canvas; a generated image or SVG supplies the visual. The important caveat is that GitHub’s contribution graph is a defined record of qualifying activity, not a complete count of every hour you spent coding.
What the finished profile is made of
The design pairs two distinct elements: a console-inspired profile README and a city visual whose geometry or lights reflect contribution activity. The README is the part GitHub natively displays at the top of a profile. GitHub Docs describes it as a customizable section and says you can format it with GitHub Flavored Markdown, including images and GIFs: Managing your profile README.

The city is an image-rendering idea, not a built-in GitHub visualization. A generator can turn selected contribution data into an SVG or another image, which the README then embeds. The visual language is yours to define: for example, buildings might vary in height or illumination according to activity. Those are design choices, not details established about the specific project named in this article.
What a contribution-built city can represent
GitHub calls the graph on a profile a record of contributions made to repositories on GitHub. It covers the past year, and GitHub assigns contribution timestamps according to UTC. That makes the graph a useful source for a time-based visual, but it is not a full ledger of development work.

GitHub’s contribution rules determine which activity qualifies. Creating a repository and forking one always count. Issues, pull requests, reviews, discussions, and commits count under specified conditions. For a commit to appear, its author email must be associated with the GitHub account, it must be in a standalone repository on a qualifying branch, and the user must meet one of GitHub’s listed relationship conditions for that repository. As a result, a quiet-looking district does not necessarily mean no coding happened. Work outside GitHub, commits with an unlinked email, or activity that does not meet the platform’s rules may not appear. GitHub also notes that a graph may need to be rebuilt in some cases. Design the city as an interpretation of the visible graph, rather than a definitive measure of productivity.

Choose what activity the image uses
Public activity
By default, the profile graph shows activity from public repositories. A generated visual based on the publicly visible graph can therefore reflect that activity without exposing repository details beyond what is already public.

Private activity
GitHub lets account owners choose to show private contribution counts. Viewers without access to those repositories see anonymized counts, not repository names or other private details. If a visualization uses those counts, explain that it reflects anonymized activity where appropriate; do not imply the artwork reveals private project specifics.

How generated visuals fit into a README
A profile README can embed an image, so a generated SVG can serve as the city panel or console display. One open-source example, Profile Cards Action, documents a workflow that queries GitHub GraphQL for profile and contribution data, renders SVG cards, and can commit the generated files. Its README also demonstrates scheduled GitHub Actions and a <picture> element for light and dark variants.

That project is an implementation example, not proof of how any particular cyberpunk city was built. Before adopting a workflow, inspect its documentation and code, confirm which data it retrieves, and decide whether its output and update approach suit your profile. A static image gives you direct control over when it changes; an automated workflow can regenerate files, but adds configuration and maintenance. Neither choice guarantees that the artwork updates instantly when GitHub’s contribution data changes.

- Keep essential information—your name, role, and links to important work—in ordinary README text, not only inside an image.
- Give the city image descriptive alternative text that explains what it represents, such as a visualization of qualifying GitHub activity over time.
- Check contrast and legibility in both light and dark themes if you provide theme-specific artwork.
- Use the README to explain the visualization’s scope: whether it uses public activity alone or includes anonymized private contribution counts.
- Avoid presenting the city as a literal productivity score. GitHub’s criteria define what appears, and the visualization reflects only the data supplied to it.
Keep the visual honest as it changes
Because the profile graph represents a rolling year and uses UTC timestamps, a generated city can change as qualifying contributions enter or leave that window. If the image is refreshed on a schedule, its display may lag behind the current graph; if it is generated manually, it will remain unchanged until regenerated. State the refresh approach only if you know how the project actually works.

The platform rules also matter when troubleshooting an unexpectedly empty or incomplete city. Check whether the relevant commits use an email associated with the account, whether they are on a qualifying branch in a standalone repository, and whether the repository relationship meets GitHub’s criteria. Review the account’s private-contribution display setting if counts appear different to you and to other viewers. These checks address the source graph; they do not establish that an image generator is functioning correctly.
