Choosing a JBL Boombox: What the Loudness Figures Show

JBL’s 3.5 dB claim applies to the original Boombox versus the Xtreme. It does not establish how much louder the Boombox 4 is than earlier models.

JBL says the original Boombox plays 3.5 dB louder than the JBL Xtreme, describing the difference as a “150% volume increase.” That comparison applies to those two models—not to every Boombox generation. JBL does not explain the measurement method or how it calculates the percentage, and the available figures do not establish a controlled loudness comparison between the Boombox 4 and its predecessors.

What JBL’s 3.5 dB figure actually compares

JBL Support answers the question “Does the JBL Boombox play at louder volume than the Xtreme?” with: “Yes, the Boombox plays at 3,5dB higher volume than the JBL Xtreme.” The figure refers to the original Boombox versus the JBL Xtreme; JBL’s page does not specify a test procedure or explain the basis for its separate “150% volume increase” description. Decibels describe sound level on a logarithmic scale, so a dB difference is not itself a percentage increase in perceived loudness. Without JBL’s method and definition, treat “150%” as the company’s wording, not as a conversion that can be independently verified from the published 3.5 dB figure.

Does that answer apply to the Boombox 4?

No. The 3.5 dB statement is about the original Boombox and the Xtreme, not the Boombox 4. HARMAN announced the Boombox 4 on September 3, 2025, and says it delivers 50% more power output on battery than its predecessor. That is a manufacturer power-output claim, not a measured dB increase or a claim of 50% greater perceived loudness. HARMAN’s launch announcement

Wattage also cannot stand in for a direct loudness comparison. JBL lists the Boombox 4 at 2 x 65 W RMS for woofers plus 2 x 40 W RMS for tweeters in AC mode, and 2 x 60 W RMS plus 2 x 40 W RMS in battery mode. Those are specifications, not maximum-SPL results measured against an earlier model. JBL Boombox 4 specification sheet

What the Boombox 4 figures can—and cannot—tell you

JBL’s specification sheet lists two 5-inch woofers, two 0.75-inch tweeters, three passive radiators, Bluetooth 5.4, a 37 Hz–20 kHz frequency response and a 99.02 Wh battery. It states up to 28 hours of playtime, plus up to six more hours with Playtime Boost; runtime depends on volume and audio content. These details help describe the speaker, but none establishes how many decibels louder it is than another generation. JBL Boombox 4 specification sheet

TechRadar reports that the Boombox 4 reaches 105 dB and notes that the sound starts to hollow out near the highest levels. The review passage does not provide enough measurement detail—such as distance, weighting and test conditions—to use 105 dB as a controlled comparison with another speaker. How to judge a louder-speaker comparison

A useful model-to-model loudness comparison needs matched maximum-SPL measurements: the same distance, test signal, settings and power mode. It should also account for distortion or compression near maximum output, since a speaker can produce a high reading while sounding less clean. Bass balance and battery runtime matter to real-world use, but neither proves a maximum-volume advantage.

RTINGS has a Boombox 3 versus Boombox 4 comparison with an SPL-at-maximum-volume field, but the numerical values are locked on the cited page. It therefore does not provide accessible figures here for calculating a generation-to-generation difference. RTINGS’ comparison page

For a simple answer, use JBL’s 3.5 dB claim only for the original Boombox against the Xtreme. For the Boombox 4, the published wattage, battery-power claim and reviewer’s 105 dB result do not establish a directly comparable dB gain over earlier Boombox models.
