In the U.S. examples below, standard transfers are generally free but take longer; instant transfers usually arrive faster and charge a fee. The exact options, limits and timing depend on the service and destination.
First check whether your wallet actually holds money
Not every phone wallet has a balance to withdraw. The OECD’s 2025 report distinguishes pass-through instruments, which route a payment from an underlying card or bank account without holding the funds, from staged instruments, where the app holds funds. If a purchase charged your card or bank directly, there may be no app balance to cash out.

This guide covers U.S. services and terms documented by the providers. Their availability, fees and rules may differ elsewhere and can change; check the live app and its current terms before confirming a transfer.
How cashing out usually works
- Link a destination. Add a bank account or eligible debit card, and complete any verification the service requires.
- Choose the amount and destination. Check that the bank account or card is eligible for the selected transfer method.
- Select a speed. If offered, compare standard and instant transfer options.
- Review the details. Check the displayed fee, transfer limits and destination information before confirming.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the status or transaction details until the receiving institution posts the funds.
For example, Venmo’s instructions describe adding and verifying a bank account before transferring. PayPal’s U.S. help page describes starting from the balance and choosing a transfer destination and method.

Which route should you choose?
Choose standard when cost matters more than speed
For balances that do not need to arrive immediately, a free standard bank transfer is the lower-cost option described by PayPal and Venmo. Allow for the provider’s stated business-day window, weekends and holidays, and the receiving bank’s posting time.

- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.

Choose instant only when the timing is worth the fee
Instant transfers cost a percentage of the amount in the PayPal, Venmo and Apple Cash examples, subject to minimum and maximum fees. Compare the fee displayed for your exact transfer with the value of receiving the money sooner; an instant label is not a promise that the receiving bank will post funds immediately.
Use an ATM or check only if your provider offers it
PayPal describes both its debit-card ATM route and a mailed check for eligible users. These are provider-specific alternatives, not universal mobile-wallet features. Consider any ATM charge, check fee and delivery time before choosing them.

Why a transfer can remain pending or fail
- Review or security check: A provider may review, delay or stop a transfer. Apple says security checks can affect how quickly Apple Cash funds become available; PayPal and Venmo also describe transfer reviews.
- Destination details are wrong or incomplete: PayPal warns that incorrect or incomplete information can make a transfer fail and return. Verify the account or card details before sending.
- The destination or method is ineligible: A debit card must be eligible for the relevant service and transfer route. Confirm eligibility in the app rather than assuming any linked card will work.
- A limit or minimum applies: Check the per-transfer and rolling-period limits, along with any minimum, before choosing an amount.
- The provider has sent it, but the bank has not posted it: A completed status can mean the payment service processed and sent the transfer. The receiving institution may still need time to make it available.
If a transfer does not arrive, check its status and destination details in the app, then contact the provider or receiving institution using the transaction information. Avoid sending a second transfer until you understand the status of the first.

An app balance is not automatically the same thing as a deposit held directly at a bank, and insurance coverage should not be assumed. Cash App’s current U.S. terms describe it as a financial services platform, not an FDIC-insured bank, and say funds may be eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance only in specified account circumstances and subject to conditions; some balances are not covered. Read the particular service’s current disclosures to understand how your balance is held and what conditions apply.

- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
If you regularly receive money into a payment app, consider whether leaving it there or moving it to a bank account better fits how you manage funds. Any interest, insurance or account benefit depends on the specific receiving institution and its terms; it is not established simply by making a cash-out transfer.
