Show Users the Real Cost: Building Honest Pricing Into a Crypto Swap UI

A transparent swap quote separates expected output, pool fees, network cost, price impact, any interface charge, and the slippage bound that protects execution.

A trustworthy crypto swap screen should show the estimated amount the user may receive alongside the costs and execution limits that can change that amount. Keep pool or protocol fees, network costs, price impact, any interface or routing charge, and slippage protection distinct: they describe different things, and slippage tolerance is a limit—not a fee.

What does a crypto swap really cost?

A swap is not always a simple exchange at a fixed rate. On automated market makers such as Uniswap, a trade executes against pool liquidity rather than matching discrete order-book orders. The amount received therefore depends on the route, pool liquidity, applicable fees, and the state of the market when the transaction executes. Uniswap’s overview of how its pools work explains the liquidity-based model.

For a user-facing quote, present the estimated output and each applicable cost or execution consideration together. Do not collapse them into one unlabeled “fee” or describe a displayed exchange rate as the full cost.

  • Expected output: The token amount the current route estimates the user will receive. Make clear that it is an estimate, and show whether the quote is current or needs refreshing.
  • Pool or protocol fee: The fee charged by the pool or protocol for the swap. It can vary by version and pool; a single platform-wide percentage may not describe the route.
  • Network cost: The transaction cost for submitting the swap on the blockchain. Show it separately from the pool fee and exchange rate. Whether a failed transaction still incurs a network cost depends on the product and network; do not imply universal behavior.
  • Price impact: The estimated effect of the trade itself on the pool price, given available liquidity. It is not a separate fee collected from the user.
  • Interface or routing charge: If the specific interface or route adds a charge, identify it separately. Do not imply that every swap interface currently charges one.
  • Slippage tolerance and minimum received: State the execution bound in plain language: the minimum acceptable amount or maximum permitted movement from the quote. It is protection against an execution worse than that limit, not an extra charge.

For context, Uniswap Developers document a flat 0.30% swap fee for v2 pools; standard v3 fee tiers of 0.05%, 0.30%, and 1%, with additional tiers possible through UNI governance; and v4 pool fees configurable by pool creators from 0% to 100% in 0.0001% increments, with dynamic fees also possible through hooks. These are Uniswap-specific parameters, not market averages or a prediction of the fees on a particular route. Check the actual pool and route shown to the user. Uniswap’s fee documentation describes these distinctions.

What is the difference between price impact and slippage?

Price impact comes from the trade against liquidity

Price impact is the way a trade changes the price available in a liquidity pool as it executes. A larger trade relative to the pool’s depth generally has greater impact; a pool with less liquidity can also mean greater impact. It is part of the trade’s pricing, not a fee line charged separately. Uniswap Labs’ explanation of price impact and its swap documentation describe the relationship between trade size and liquidity. A UI should estimate the impact and make unusually high values conspicuous; Uniswap says its interface anticipates price impact and warns when it is unusually high.

Slippage is the difference between the quote and execution

Slippage describes a difference between the expected execution and the actual execution. While a transaction is pending, market conditions can change, so the output at execution may differ from the quote. The Uniswap Labs comparison of price impact and price slippage distinguishes this pending-transaction effect from price impact caused by the trade.

A slippage tolerance sets how far execution may move from the expected price before the transaction is rejected. If the resulting output falls outside the permitted bound, the transaction may revert rather than execute at an unacceptable price. A looser tolerance allows more movement; it does not charge the user a larger fee by itself. Uniswap Developers note: “Price impact and slippage can both change while a transaction is pending, so integrations typically include user protection checks on top of protocol execution checks.”

How should a swap UI explain a quote before confirmation?

Use labels that answer separate questions: how much might I receive, what is charged, what changes the effective price, and what outcome will the transaction reject? One clear layout could put the expected output first, then show the relevant fee and cost lines, followed by price impact and the execution limit. The exact layout is a design recommendation based on these mechanics, not a universal legal requirement.

  • Simple & Secure Interface: Manage your digital assets easily with a clear OLED screen for secure on-device confirmations

  • Effortless Asset Management: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our intuitive desktop and mobile app
  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  • Put output in context: Show the estimated token amount and whether the quote is fresh. If it can expire or needs refreshing, make that state visible before confirmation.
  • Use separate cost labels: Distinguish the pool fee, network cost, and any actual interface or routing charge. Avoid a single ambiguous total that hides what each component represents.
  • Describe price impact as an estimate: Explain that it reflects the trade against pool liquidity, and flag unusually high impact rather than presenting it as an ordinary fee.
  • Translate the protection bound: Display the slippage tolerance together with a minimum-received figure or clear equivalent. Explain that execution below the minimum can fail.
  • Keep quote refresh and confirmation connected: If the quote changes while the user reviews it, show the updated expected output and relevant limits before the user approves the swap.

These distinctions are supported by the mechanics described in Uniswap’s swap documentation; they do not establish a single mandatory screen design.

Why might the received amount differ from the quote?

The quote is an estimate based on the route and market conditions when it is produced. The trade’s price impact reflects how that trade interacts with available liquidity; separately, the market can move while the transaction is pending. Slippage tolerance limits how much worse the execution may be than the quoted expectation. Depending on the bound and transaction outcome, the swap can execute within the limit or revert if execution would breach it.

For a user explaining a mismatch, keep those causes separate: price impact is caused by the trade against liquidity, while slippage is the change between expected and actual execution as conditions move during pending time. Neither term should be used as a catch-all synonym for “fee.”

What should pricing disclosures say about legal requirements?

Do not turn a design recommendation into a global legal claim. The European Commission’s delegated measure addresses specified conflicts-of-interest disclosures for covered crypto-asset service providers: those disclosures must be detailed, specific, and clear, available prominently on the provider’s website and in formats available on devices used to provide services, and kept up to date. That is an EU-specific rule about conflicts of interest under MiCA and its delegated acts; it does not establish that every decentralized interface is covered or prescribe the cost breakdown above. Applicability to a particular product depends on facts such as provider, activity, custody model, user location, and jurisdiction. See the Commission delegated regulation document and its MiCA implementing and delegated acts page.
