Motorola Edge 40 Review: Pros, Cons and Verdict

The Motorola Edge 40 pairs a slim design and fast charging with capable hardware, but its curved display, average cameras and variant-dependent updates temper the verdict.

The Motorola Edge 40 is a compelling 2023 premium mid-range phone if you want a slim design, a fast curved display, IP68 protection and both wired and wireless charging. Its Dimensity 8020 hardware is capable for everyday use, but the cameras are good rather than exceptional, the curved edges can be awkward, and update timing depends on the exact model and market. Whether it is worth buying now comes down to the price, warranty and condition of the specific unit.

What stands out about the Edge 40?

Slim build and immersive screen

The Edge 40’s slim design, metal frame and vegan leather finish option give it a more premium feel than its mid-range positioning might suggest. Its 6.55-inch pOLED display curves along both sides and supports a high refresh rate; Gadgets 360’s India review identified it as a 144 Hz panel. The curved screen makes video and other content feel expansive, though the shape is a matter of preference rather than an automatic advantage.

Fast charging, including wireless

Motorola specifies 68 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging. Wireless charging is a useful extra at this tier, but Motorola says the wireless charger is sold separately, so include the cost of a compatible charger if you plan to use it. Motorola’s charging information confirms the separate-charger qualification.

Capable hardware for everyday use

The Dimensity 8020, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage give the phone a strong hardware base for its generation. Gadgets 360 found routine use smooth in most cases. In its gaming tests, it observed some stutters at high settings before performance smoothed out, as well as mild warmth around the camera module after extended play. Those are review-specific observations, not a guarantee of how every game or unit will behave.

How good are the cameras?

The 50 MP main camera has a notably wide f/1.4 aperture. Gadgets 360 reported good detail but also some oversharpening and saturated color. It found the autofocus ultrawide camera useful for macro shots, while noting edge distortion. TechRadar’s 2023 assessment described the cameras as average overall. Taken together, the cameras are versatile and capable, but processing consistency is not the Edge 40’s strongest case.

Expect the most variation in situations where processing matters as much as the hardware, such as selfies, skin tones and challenging light. The available reviews do not establish a single result for every scene or software version, so check sample photos from the exact variant if camera quality is a deciding factor.

How long does the battery last?

The battery capacity is 4,400 mAh. In Gadgets 360’s review, the phone lasted a full day with medium use and no gaming. The same reviewer recorded an average screen-on time of 7 hours 30 minutes and 15 hours 31 minutes in an HD video-loop test. These are results from that review’s testing, not a runtime promise; gaming and heavier use can leave less charge by the end of the day.

Gadgets 360 also measured a charge from zero to 75 percent in 30 minutes. Actual charging time can vary with the charger, phone temperature, battery condition and use while charging.

Is the IP68 rating enough for water protection?

IP68 is not a claim that the phone is waterproof. Motorola’s user guide says the rating was tested under controlled laboratory conditions and permits submersion in still fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes. The guide also says resistance decreases through normal wear. It warns against pressurised water and liquids other than fresh water, and says not to charge the phone while it is wet.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Curved edges can interfere with use. TechRadar and Gadgets 360 reviewers noted that the curved screen can be annoying; some users may find typing or gaming awkward or encounter accidental touches.
  • Camera quality is not class-leading. Reviewers found useful versatility and detail, but also average overall results, oversharpening, saturated color or imperfect skin tones.
  • Update delivery deserves scrutiny. Motorola’s support statement is model-specific, and rollout timing can vary. A promised support window does not tell you which patches or Android version a used or regional unit currently has.
  • Wireless charging requires an extra purchase. The compatible charger is sold separately.

How long will the Motorola Edge 40 get updates?

For model XT2303-2, Motorola’s regulatory statement specifies four years of security updates, from May 2023 through May 2027. TechRadar reported the launch promise as three OS upgrades plus four years of security updates. Motorola’s model-specific support statement cautions that update cycles can vary by carrier and that regular updates or OS upgrades may delay security patches.

Check the model number and regional or carrier variant before relying on that schedule. For a second-hand phone, inspect its current Android version and security patch date in Settings; do not assume the installed software or rollout status from the launch-era promise.

Is the Motorola Edge 40 worth buying?

It can be a good buy if the specific phone is in sound condition and its local price, warranty and update status make sense. Its strongest combination is a slim build, high-refresh pOLED screen, IP68 rating, capable everyday hardware and fast wired plus wireless charging. It is a less convincing choice if you prioritise consistently excellent cameras, dislike curved displays, or need a support schedule verified for your exact variant.

Historical launch prices help explain its original positioning but should not be treated as today’s value: TechRadar reported £529.99 in the UK, while Gadgets 360 reported ₹29,999 in India. Both figures are 2023 launch prices. Current retail, refurbished and used prices are not established here, so compare the unit’s asking price with its condition, remaining support, local warranty and alternatives available where you live.

When comparing it with another phone, focus on screen shape and accidental touches, camera consistency, sustained gaming heat, charging options, update rollout and the conditions attached to the IP rating. Pixel 7, Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, iQOO Neo 7 and Poco F5 appeared in launch-era reviewer comparisons; those comparisons are historical context, not a current buying shortlist.
