A staleness checker can identify work that may be out of date without preventing anyone from acting on it. In an account published by Devaland, the checker flagged 16 of 58 open task lines, but its failing status was not connected to anything that stopped downstream work. The author says four flagged items still shaped actions they should not have taken.
What the checker was designed to catch
Devaland describes an operations list whose open task lines were linked to project notes. Each line was expected to include a tag naming its note and the date it had last been reconciled. The script compared that date with the note’s modification time: if the note had changed since reconciliation, the task was marked stale.

The checker also flagged open lines that had no tag or pointed to a note that no longer existed. In the reported run, it flagged 16 of 58 open lines. Those are the author’s figures from one run, not independently verified statistics or evidence of how often stale tasks occur elsewhere.
Why a clear warning did not stop the work
According to Devaland, the checker printed the offending task along with its note and dates, distinguished three states, and returned status 1 when the file was not clean and status 0 when it was. But the author found no scheduled job, wrapper, caller, or other step that read the exit status and stopped the agent’s work.

That distinction is the core of the incident: a check produced useful information, but no enforcing consumer acted on it. A nonzero exit code has no protective effect by itself. A workflow has to read the result and branch, halt, or otherwise prevent the risky next step.
Four flagged tasks the author says still affected actions
Devaland says they caught all four of these items. The examples are the author’s account; they have not been independently corroborated.

- Supplier setting: A task concerned a supplier setting the author says they had changed the previous evening.
- Closed account item: An item had been closed four days earlier. Notes said to wait and indicated that chasing had already stopped.
- Accountant message: A task concerned a message the author says had already been sent twice and was closed as non-urgent.
- Government directorate email: A draft contradicted an earlier note saying the author had downloaded and read the relevant document. The author says the draft was already prepared and close to being sent.
These examples show how stale context can lead to redundant follow-ups or a message based on an outdated understanding. They do not establish that every flagged item was wrong, or that stale-task errors are common.
Turn detection into an operational safeguard
Devaland proposes three workflow changes. They address different points in the process: prevent unreconciled tasks from entering the work queue, connect the checker’s failure status to a decision, and make enforcement part of the workflow rather than relying on nearby prose.

- Filter before work begins. Keep unreconciled lines out of the process that acts on them, so an agent does not treat a flagged item as actionable by default.
- Give the exit status a consumer. Configure the caller or wrapper to branch on the checker’s result: proceed on a clean status, and stop or require reconciliation on a failing one.
- Make the rule a gate. Put enforcement in the workflow itself rather than relying on instructions written beside the task list. Prose may explain the rule; a gate determines whether the next action can proceed.
The article does not report that these changes were implemented or tested, so they are proposed remedies, not demonstrated results.
A practical test for any check
Ask: while this check is failing, what cannot happen? If the honest answer is “nothing,” the check may be informative, but it is not blocking the action it is supposed to govern. That is Devaland’s practical test for distinguishing a warning from a safeguard—not a formal standard or an independently validated benchmark.

As the author puts it, “A check that reports is documentation. A check that blocks is a control.” The lesson is not that detection is useless; it is that detection alone does not enforce a decision. The value of a check depends on whether the workflow consumes its result at the point where action could still be prevented.

Devaland’s account is a single reported incident. It illustrates a gap between identifying stale work and controlling what happens next, but it does not independently establish the checker’s accuracy in every case, the prevalence of this failure mode, or the effectiveness of the proposed fixes.
