To show hidden files in Windows 11, open File Explorer and select View > Show > Hidden items. In Windows 10, use View > Options > Change folder and search options, then select Show hidden files, folders, and drives on the View tab and choose OK.

Show hidden files in Windows 11

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View > Show > Hidden items.

Hidden items become visible in File Explorer. This is the standard display toggle for hidden files and folders. Microsoft documents this route in its File Explorer in Windows guidance.

Windows 11 also has a hidden-and-system-files setting

Windows 11 provides a separate control in Settings > System > Advanced > File Explorer: set Show hidden and system files to On. This is broader than the ordinary File Explorer Hidden items toggle because its label explicitly includes system files. Microsoft describes this setting in its guidance on finding lost files after upgrading Windows.

What showing hidden items does—and when not to change the setting

These controls change what File Explorer displays; making an item visible does not itself change the item’s hidden attribute or repair it.

For one specific task—copying files from a corrupted user profile—Microsoft Support instructs users: “Do not change File Explorer view options to show hidden files and folders or show hidden protected operating system files.” Follow that caution when carrying out that recovery procedure; it is not a general warning that every hidden file is dangerous. See Microsoft’s Fix a corrupted user profile instructions.
