What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, yes—if Credential Guard is available on your Windows 11 PC and the VPN, Wi-Fi, and other sign-in methods you rely on still work. It makes selected Windows credentials harder for malware to steal, but it does not protect every password or account. Check whether it is enabled and test your authentication workflows before changing it.
What Credential Guard protects—and what it does not
Credential Guard uses virtualization-based security (VBS) to isolate certain secrets, including NTLM password hashes and Kerberos Ticket Granting Tickets. A protected process, LSAIso.exe, handles those secrets separately from the ordinary Windows Local Security Authority process. The aim is to make them harder for malware running in Windows—even malware with administrator privileges—to extract. Microsoft describes Credential Guard’s design and protections, and explains how the isolation works.

That protection has limits. Credential Guard does not protect local accounts or Microsoft Accounts, credentials managed outside the Windows protections it covers, or the Active Directory database on domain controllers. Some protocol flows may still prompt for or use credentials stored in Windows Vault. It is a targeted defense against theft of selected credentials, not a universal password vault or a guarantee against credential theft. Microsoft’s overview lists these boundaries.
Is Credential Guard already enabled on your PC?
Do not assume that every Windows 11 computer has it. Microsoft says eligible devices running Windows 11 version 22H2 or later may have Credential Guard enabled by default, depending on licensing, hardware and software requirements, and whether it was explicitly disabled. The supported-edition table lists Windows Enterprise and Education, with associated Enterprise E3/E5 and Education A3/A5 entitlements. Windows 11 Pro is not listed in that table, although prior Credential Guard history can complicate the state on some Pro devices. Check the actual device rather than inferring its status from “Windows 11” alone. Microsoft’s overview covers default enablement and editions.

VBS and Secure Boot are required. Microsoft recommends TPM 1.2 or 2.0 for hardware binding, and UEFI Lock to make disabling Credential Guard through a registry change more difficult. These requirements and recommendations affect eligibility and how hard the feature is to turn off; they do not mean every personal PC must have a TPM upgrade to use Windows 11. See Microsoft’s requirements and configuration notes.
What might stop working or ask you to sign in again?
The main personal-use tradeoff is compatibility with older authentication methods and single sign-on (SSO). Credential Guard blocks some capabilities and can affect applications that depend on them. Microsoft identifies Kerberos DES, unconstrained delegation, Kerberos TGT extraction, and NTLMv1 as examples that can break applications. Digest authentication, credential delegation, MS-CHAPv2, and CredSSP may instead cause extra credential prompts or expose credentials to risk. Kerberos-based services such as file shares and Remote Desktop generally continue to work, but the outcome depends on the authentication method the service actually uses. Microsoft documents these compatibility effects.

Pay particular attention to school, employer, or older network profiles. Microsoft’s known-issues guidance calls out Wi-Fi, VPN, RDP, and wired 802.1X setups using insecure password-based protocols: SSO may stop working, and you may have to authenticate again in each new Windows session. For Wi-Fi and VPN connections that rely on MS-CHAPv2-based methods such as PEAP-MSCHAPv2 or EAP-MSCHAPv2, Microsoft recommends moving to certificate-based methods such as PEAP-TLS or EAP-TLS. Read Microsoft’s known-issues guidance.
How to decide whether to keep it enabled
- Check your edition, entitlement, and current state. Credential Guard may already be enabled on an eligible device. Verify the PC itself instead of relying on a general rule about Windows 11. Microsoft explains eligibility and default enablement.
- List the sign-ins you depend on. Consider VPN and Wi-Fi profiles, wired 802.1X, Remote Desktop, and applications that use delegated credentials or legacy authentication. Test the services you use, especially those managed by a school or employer.
- If they work, keep the protection enabled. You retain its added defense for the selected secrets it covers. If a workflow fails, identify its authentication protocol and ask whether it can be updated before turning protection off. Microsoft warns that disabling Credential Guard leaves stored domain credentials vulnerable to theft. See Microsoft’s compatibility and mitigation guidance.
- If you must disable it, use the procedure that matches its configuration. Policy or registry settings may disable it after a restart when UEFI Lock is not in use. If UEFI Lock was configured, the process must account for that firmware setting; a registry change alone may not be enough. Follow Microsoft’s configuration and disablement instructions.
How Credential Guard fits into account security
Credential Guard is one layer, not a replacement for secure sign-in practices. Microsoft’s broader guidance for organizational environments recommends moving away from passwords toward options such as Windows Hello for Business, FIDO2 security keys, or smart cards. These are broader authentication choices, not prerequisites for Credential Guard. Microsoft’s identity-protection guidance discusses these approaches.
