Recycling an old computer means dealing with it responsibly when you no longer need it: first consider repair, an upgrade, donation, or refurbishment; if it cannot be kept in use, send it through an appropriate collection route for materials recovery. Donating a working computer for reuse is part of responsible electronics stewardship, but it is not the same as dismantling it for recycling.
What counts as recycling an old computer?
In everyday use, “recycling” can describe the broader process of managing an unwanted computer responsibly. That process may begin by extending the device’s life through repair or an upgrade, or by passing a working computer to someone who can use it. When reuse is no longer practical, a collection program can route the equipment to materials recovery.

The distinction matters: a donated or refurbished computer remains a product in use, while materials recycling recovers materials from equipment that has reached end of use. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that electronics contain metals, plastics, and glass, and that extracting and manufacturing these materials requires energy. - Consider whether it can stay useful. A repair or hardware or software upgrade may extend its life. If it works and is no longer needed, consider donation or refurbishment rather than materials recovery.
- Protect your information. Delete personal information before donating or recycling. Do not assume that a collection program will wipe a device simply because it accepts it. For sensitive data, ask the provider exactly what data-destruction service it offers and obtain the terms in writing.
- Check how batteries are handled. Remove a battery only if the device allows it safely and the collection program’s instructions call for removal. The EPA warns that lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in household garbage or recycling bins; they may require a separate recycling route.
- Confirm acceptance and conditions. Contact the program or facility to check whether it accepts your computer type and accessories, and ask about data handling, battery instructions, fees, and any other conditions.
How to choose a collection route
Households can check local or community collection facilities, manufacturer or retailer programs, and donation or recycling locator resources. Availability, accepted equipment, and program terms vary by location. The EPA’s locator listings are informational and do not mean that the agency endorses the listed organizations.

When comparing routes, ask whether the program prioritizes direct reuse, refurbishment, or materials recovery; how it handles data and batteries; whether it explains downstream handling; and whether there are fees or limits on accepted items. These are useful questions, but a provider may not publish every detail.
For businesses and large purchasers
For businesses, governments, and large purchasers, the EPA recommends using an electronics recycler certified to R2 or e-Stewards, the two accredited U.S. certification standards it recognizes. The standards assess environmental, worker-health, and security practices, including downstream handling, reuse and recycling, and data destruction. Certification includes independent auditing and continuing oversight. The EPA describes the standards on its certified electronics recyclers page.

Certification is useful when selecting a provider, but still confirm what the specific recycler will do with your equipment and what documentation it provides, especially when devices contain sensitive information.
Why responsible computer recycling matters
Recovering materials from electronics can reduce the need to obtain new materials and manufacture them from scratch. As a dated illustration—not a current measurement or recycling rate—the EPA reported a 2006 U.S. Geological Survey estimate that recycling one million laptops saves energy equivalent to the annual electricity use of more than 3,500 U.S. homes.
