What makes a keyboard mechanical?
A mechanical keyboard has an individual mechanical switch beneath each key. Switch designs vary in how they feel and sound, so “mechanical” describes a broad category rather than one typing experience. For a balanced comparison with membrane keyboards, consider feel, sound, durability, and performance rather than assuming one type wins every category (RTINGS, “Mechanical vs Membrane Keyboards: Which Should You Choose?”).

Which mechanical keyboard switch should you choose?
Start with the three common feel categories. These are broad descriptions; the sound of a complete keyboard also depends on its design and the setting where you use it. RTINGS’ switch guide, updated May 20, 2025, explains that switch choice is a major contributor to feel and sound (“Mechanical Switches: How to Choose”).

Are mechanical keyboards too loud for an office?
Not necessarily, but the answer depends on the switch, the keyboard, and the people nearby. A clicky switch deliberately adds an audible click, which may be distracting in a shared office, home, or room with roommates. If quiet matters, compare quieter switch options and listen to the complete keyboard where possible; a switch category alone cannot guarantee a particular sound level.

How should you compare keyboards before buying?
- Feel: Decide whether you want smooth linear travel, a tactile bump, or a click mechanism.
- Sound: Consider coworkers, family, or roommates, not just your own preference.
- Layout: Choose a form that has the keys you need and suits your tasks. The cited guidance does not establish one best layout for everyone.
- Workstation fit: Think about keyboard height and placement alongside your arms and wrists, rather than judging comfort by switch feel alone.
A switch tester can be an optional way to compare switch feels before choosing a keyboard. It is not essential, and no particular tester is established here as a recommendation. Likewise, replacement switches and keycaps are not necessary purchases: compatibility and a specific need depend on the keyboard.
Does a mechanical keyboard improve ergonomics?
Not by itself. OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance recommends placing the keyboard directly in front of you, relaxing your shoulders, keeping your elbows close to your body, and keeping your wrists straight and in line with your forearms. It also advises considering the keyboard as part of the whole workstation, including the pointer and any wrist or palm rests (OSHA, “eTools: Computer Workstations — Keyboards”).

OSHA notes that alternative keyboards may help maintain neutral wrist postures, but its guidance does not conclusively establish that they prevent discomfort or injury. Logitech likewise emphasizes that ergonomic needs and benefits vary with a person’s physiology, work setting, task, tools, and duration of use (“Do Ergonomic Keyboards Really Help?”). Neither point establishes a health benefit for mechanical keyboards specifically.

Who is a mechanical keyboard a good fit for?
- It may suit you if you have a clear preference for a particular switch feel or sound, and the available layout works for your tasks and desk.
- It may not suit your setting if the sound of the switches would bother people nearby or you cannot find a layout and placement that fit your workstation.
- It is worth comparing with a membrane keyboard if you have no strong preference yet. Try to judge the actual feel, sound, layout, and fit rather than relying on broad claims that one keyboard type is universally superior.
