A New Zealand IP address does not guarantee access to TVNZ+ or ThreeNow from overseas. Both services limit streaming to New Zealand under their content licences, and TVNZ explicitly says viewers must not try to bypass its location checks. If you are in New Zealand but a service mistakenly thinks you are abroad, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than trying to disguise your location.
Can you use a New Zealand IP address to watch TVNZ+ or ThreeNow overseas?
No—not as an approved or guaranteed way to watch. TVNZ says its content is unavailable to overseas viewers because its content-provider agreements do not grant viewing rights outside New Zealand. Its House Rules also say users must not attempt to get around the restriction or use technology that prevents TVNZ from verifying their location.

ThreeNow likewise says its content licences are limited to viewers in New Zealand, and its app is available for download and use only within the country. A VPN or other method that changes the apparent IP location does not change those licensing limits. Neither service promises that an IP address appearing to be in New Zealand will enable playback.

If you are in New Zealand but get an overseas-location error
A VPN, proxy, or custom DNS setting can make a connection appear to come from somewhere other than New Zealand. App-store country settings, device time, cached app data, and an outdated app can also complicate location checks. Work through these checks in order:

Turn off location-altering network settings
Disconnect any VPN and disable proxy settings. If you use custom DNS, turn it off temporarily and retry. These are troubleshooting steps for a viewer who is actually in New Zealand, not a way to establish viewing rights from abroad.

Check the public IP location
Use an IP geolocation lookup to see whether your current public IP is being identified as New Zealand. Results from lookup services can be imperfect; if it reports another country while you are in New Zealand, contact your internet provider about the location associated with your connection.

Verify your device time and app-store country
Set the device’s time zone and time settings to New Zealand. Check that the Google Play or Apple App Store account is registered to New Zealand; store country settings can affect whether an app is visible or available to install.

Refresh the app or browser data
Clear the app cache or browser cookies, then close and reopen the service. Check for an app update. If the location error remains, uninstall and reinstall the app, then try again.

Contact the service if the error persists
If your connection is in New Zealand, location-altering settings are off, and the checks above do not resolve the message, contact TVNZ or ThreeNow support. Include your device and app version, internet provider, and the exact error message.
Why the app may not appear in your store
ThreeNow says its app can be downloaded and used only within New Zealand. Google Play and Apple App Store country settings affect app visibility, so someone travelling or using a store account registered elsewhere may not see it. Changing a store region is not a substitute for the service’s geographic viewing rules, and it may affect other store content or account settings.

What a New Zealand IP address does—and does not—tell you
An IP address is one signal a streaming service can use to estimate where a connection is located. It is not proof that a person is physically in New Zealand, nor does it grant a licence to watch content outside the permitted territory. For both TVNZ+ and ThreeNow, the relevant official guidance limits viewing to New Zealand; viewers abroad should not rely on VPNs, DNS tools, routers, or streaming hardware to overcome that restriction.
