macOS includes Head pointer, an Accessibility feature that moves the on-screen pointer in response to movement of your face or head, detected by a built-in or connected camera. Apple’s instructions explain pointer movement and separate actions such as clicking, but do not specify how Head pointer behaves when crossing between extended displays or say that looking at a display changes keyboard focus. You can enable it in Pointer Control, then verify multi-monitor behavior on your Mac’s macOS version and display arrangement.
Pointer location is not the same as keyboard focus
The pointer (often called the cursor) is the on-screen location you move. Keyboard focus is the control or window that receives typing. Moving your head to move the pointer does not, by itself, establish that a window on another display will receive keyboard input.
Apple’s documented workflow is to position the pointer, then perform an action—such as clicking, dragging, or selecting—using a separate input method. That distinction matters if your goal is not just to move the pointer to another monitor, but to activate a window or begin typing there.
What Apple documents about multiple monitors
Apple Support’s guide, “Move the pointer using head pointer on Mac”, describes moving the pointer with face or head movement. The reviewed instructions do not expressly describe extended displays, monitor crossing, or a head-pose gesture that changes keyboard focus. This documentation boundary does not prove that pointer movement between displays is unsupported; it means Apple’s guide does not establish the behavior.

Turn on Head pointer
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Motor > Pointer Control.
- Open the Head pointer information or options panel and turn on the feature.
- Choose the movement style, pointer speed, camera, and any action switches you want to use. The labels and presentation can vary by Mac and macOS version.
- Turn on the selected camera, face it, and sit centered in front of the screen. Move your face or head using the selected control style; Apple says you do not need to exaggerate the movement or move your shoulders or body.
Apple describes two movement styles in Pointer Control: movement based on turning your face away from the center of the screen, and movement relative to head movement. Speed is adjustable. A green light indicates that the built-in camera is in use.

Moving the pointer is only one part of control
Once the pointer is where you want it, you still need a way to select, click, drag, or type. Apple lists several ways to perform pointer actions, including Mouse Keys, switches, facial expressions, and Voice Control. A configured switch can also pause or resume Head pointer.
- Move the pointer: Head pointer responds to face or head movement through the selected camera.
- Click or drag: Use a configured switch, Mouse Keys, or another supported action method.
- Type: Use the keyboard or the onscreen Accessibility Keyboard as appropriate. Moving the pointer alone does not type into a field.
- Interact without a physical mouse click: Consider switches, Voice Control, or Dwell support, depending on the task and your setup.
These are complementary input methods rather than documented ways to make head pose switch keyboard focus automatically. Apple’s Pointer Control and Mouse Keys guidance covers additional accessibility controls; available settings can vary with macOS.

Improve tracking and recover when movement is off
- Erratic movement: Adjust lighting so the camera can clearly detect your face and head.
- Movement is too large or too small: Change Head pointer speed in its options.
- The pointer seems stuck at a screen edge: Check that you are centered in front of the camera, and adjust the camera or display position if needed.
- Tracking needs a fresh starting point: Use the configured switch or facial-expression option to begin recalibration. Apple says this can return the pointer to the middle of the screen and reset the default face or head position; follow the short on-screen countdown.
- Someone uses a mouse or trackpad: Head pointer pauses while that input is being used and resumes automatically when it stops.
For multi-monitor testing, first make sure tracking is stable on the primary display, then check pointer movement across your actual display layout. If the pointer reaches another screen but typing still goes to the wrong place, treat that as a keyboard-focus issue and use a separate action to activate the intended window.

Choose a method based on the task rather than treating “focus” and pointer movement as interchangeable. Mouse Keys controls the pointer with a numeric keypad; Voice Control and switches can provide other ways to issue actions; the onscreen Accessibility Keyboard can support typing. For each option, check the relevant macOS settings and whether it meets your needs for moving, selecting, dragging, or entering text.

A developer describes Display Flow + Care as a multi-monitor workflow that activates a screen when you look at it and fades it when you look away. That is a screen-management behavior, not evidence that the app moves macOS’s pointer or changes keyboard focus. Its current features and availability should be checked with the developer before relying on it.
