Choose by the laptop you need, not by the operating system’s reputation or a sale badge. On October 7, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported Amazon prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 and $1,299 for the 15-inch model—but the available reporting does not establish a comparable Windows laptop deal on the same date. That makes the MacBook’s price concrete, not proof that Windows is cheaper or that the Mac is the better buy for you.
What the reported MacBook Air deal includes
Tom’s Guide reported the following US-market Amazon prices on October 7, 2026. Listings and inventory can change, so check the live price, seller, and configuration before buying.

| Model | Reported Amazon price | Reported comparison price | Configuration detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | $1,099 | $1,299 | Tom’s Guide identifies the deal configuration as 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | $1,299 | $1,499 | The deal report does not state the configuration detail here. |
Tom’s Guide says the $200 reductions brought both models back to their pre-price-hike prices, rather than below their launch prices. WIRED’s September 2026 laptop-guide update also listed the M5 Air at $1,099 on Amazon and $1,299 at Apple, and described a $200 increase from its earlier $1,099 price. These are dated reports, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock. Tom’s Guide’s deal report; WIRED’s laptop guide.

How to decide between a MacBook and a Windows laptop
Start with the software and tasks you cannot compromise on. Then compare the exact laptop configurations you can actually buy. Microsoft’s buying guide captures the practical priority: “Context matters more than specs. Space, mobility, battery life, and comfort shape your experience far more than processor names.”
#1 Best Overall
- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
Check app and workflow compatibility
- List the essential apps, peripherals, and work or school systems you use; confirm they support the operating system and exact device you are considering.
- If you rely on handwritten notes, a stylus, or a convertible touchscreen, Windows 2-in-1 devices may fit that workflow. MacBooks do not offer touchscreens in the lineup discussed by TechRadar.
- Consider who will share the laptop and how long you expect to keep it. Those factors can affect which software, storage, and form factor make sense.
Microsoft’s US-market guidance recommends considering where you will use the device, time away from power, primary tasks, screen needs, typing habits, shared use, and expected ownership duration. Features and availability can vary by region. Microsoft’s Windows laptop-buying guide.
Compare the whole configuration and cost
Compare screen size and quality, keyboard and trackpad feel, portability, and storage—not just processor names. Match memory and storage to your workload, and check that the price refers to the configuration you intend to buy. Include necessary accessories in the total: the M5 MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt ports, according to TechRadar, so someone connecting several peripherals may need a compatible hub or adapter. A hub is an optional cost, not a requirement for every buyer. TechRadar’s MacBook Air M5 review.

What the battery figures do—and do not—tell you
Tom’s Guide reports 15 hours 28 minutes in its battery test of the reviewed 13-inch MacBook Air M5. TechRadar reports nearly 18.5 hours in its review testing of the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441, a Windows alternative it describes as offering value and long battery life. Those results come from different publications and testing methods, so they do not establish which laptop lasts longer in a direct comparison. Neither number promises runtime for your workload: settings, usage, and other factors affect battery life, as Microsoft notes.

Does Windows save you money here?
The evidence does not answer that with a direct price comparison: the reports establish a dated MacBook Air offer but not a matching Windows Amazon deal for the same date and a comparable configuration. The Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7441 is a reviewed Windows alternative, but the cited guide does not establish its current Amazon price. Compare live listings for laptops that meet the same needs, and check the seller, included memory and storage, display, ports, and any accessories you would have to buy.
- Confirm the required apps and workflow features.
- Choose comparable configurations that satisfy those needs.
- Check current prices and availability for each exact configuration.
- Add any necessary hub, adapter, or other accessory to the total.
- Choose the device that best fits your portability, battery, screen, keyboard, and connection needs at its live price.
Microsoft’s buying guidance is written for the US market and notes that retailer prices can change. Treat the October 2026 MacBook prices as historical reporting, not a live quote.
