PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNo—most people do not need to shut down a typical PC every night to protect its hardware. If you will use it again soon, sleep offers quick resume with very low power use. Hibernate uses less power than sleep and takes longer to resume, where available. Choose Shut down when you want the computer fully off or will leave it unused for an extended time; choose Restart when Windows needs a full reboot or you are troubleshooting.
What happens when you leave a PC on overnight?
Leaving a computer on does not mean it must remain fully active. Sleep is a low-power state designed to preserve your session and let you return quickly. Microsoft describes it as using very little power while bringing you back to where you left off. Apple similarly says a sleeping Mac remains on but uses much less energy, and wakes faster than starting from off. Microsoft: Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC; Apple: Save energy on your Mac

On a laptop, closing the lid commonly puts it to sleep, but the action depends on the device’s power settings. If you need to conserve power during a longer break, hibernate may be an option on Windows: it uses less power than sleep, restores the previous session more slowly, and is not available on every PC.

Sleep, hibernate, shut down, or restart?
| Choice | Power and return | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Very low power; quick return to the current session. | A short break or overnight when you expect to resume soon. | For Macs, sleep still leaves the computer on, though it uses much less energy. |
| Hibernate | Uses less power than sleep; returns to the saved session more slowly. | A longer time away, especially when a laptop cannot be charged. | May not be available on every Windows PC. |
| Shut down | Turns the computer off through the operating system. | When you want it fully off or will not use it for an extended time. | Windows Fast Startup can make Shut down different from a full shutdown-and-boot cycle. |
| Restart | Performs a full reboot rather than using the Fast Startup shutdown path. | When troubleshooting or when an update requires a full reboot. | Windows update behavior depends on version and configuration. |
These descriptions reflect Microsoft’s Windows guidance, which covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 while noting that available options vary by device, and Apple’s Mac sleep guidance. See Microsoft Learn: System power states and Apple: Put your Mac to sleep or wake it.
#1 Best Overall
- KEEP YOUR COMPUTER, WI-FI AND ROUTER RUNNING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES: Supplies short-term battery power during outages to maintain internet connectivity and allow safe shutdown of computer during power interruptions
- POWER PROBLEMS DON'T ONLY HAPPEN DURING STORMS: 23 minutes of runtime (at 100W load) guards against outages, while surge protection shields connected devices from unexpected power events that happen even on a normal day
- PROTECT EVERYTHING ON YOUR DESK: 5 well-spaced outlets with full battery backup and surge protection, plus 2 surge-only outlets for less critical gear
- PHONE CHARGER: Keep your phone charged even when the power's out. The built-in 1.5A USB port works during outages
- EASY BATTERY REPLACEMENT KEEPS COSTS LOW: Swap the internal battery in minutes when it ages out, no need to replace the whole unit (APC replacement battery APCRBC154, sold separately)
Why Windows Shut down and Restart can differ
Windows Fast Startup preserves system state to speed up startup after Shut down. As a result, choosing Shut down is not always equivalent to a full restart. If you need a true reboot—for example, while troubleshooting—choose Restart.
There is also a specific update caveat: Microsoft documents a Windows 10 scenario in which pending updates may not install through Fast Startup and directs users to select Restart. That guidance concerns the described Windows 10 scenario; it does not mean every ordinary shutdown fails to install updates. Microsoft Learn: Updates may not install with Fast Startup in Windows 10

What Mac sleep does differently
A sleeping Mac is still on, but uses much less energy than an active one and wakes faster than it starts from off. Mac laptops also have a safe-sleep feature: the current state is saved when the Mac sleeps, helping protect it if the battery runs down or is replaced while it is asleep. The official Windows and Apple guidance cited here explains power use, session recovery, settings, and update handling. It does not establish, through controlled evidence, that nightly shutdown either extends or shortens the life of a typical consumer computer. There is no supported basis here for assigning a lifespan, failure rate, or hardware-wear advantage to either habit.
