Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteClaude Code compaction summarizes earlier conversation history so work can continue with more room in context. It is a recap, not a word-for-word archive: exact wording and detail from earlier turns are not guaranteed to remain available. Claude Code can compact automatically near its context limit, or you can run /compact yourself. Anthropic’s public Help Center describes the trigger only as “close to the limit”; it does not publish a dependable numeric threshold or the complete summary recipe. Claude Help Center: Models, usage, and limits in Claude Code.
What compaction does in Claude Code
A long coding session can accumulate more conversation history than fits in the active context. Compaction condenses that history into a summary, allowing the session to proceed with a recap standing in for older turns. This reduces how much of the earlier exchange is carried forward in its original form; it does not preserve a complete transcript. Anthropic’s Help Center describes both manual compaction with /compact and automatic compaction near the context limit.

The public Claude Code documentation reviewed does not specify the exact automatic trigger or every step used to produce the summary. Treat claims about a fixed percentage, token count, or a guaranteed summary format as unverified unless current Claude Code documentation for your version states them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat Claude Code may forget after compaction
“Forget” is useful shorthand, but the important distinction is that older turns are represented by a generated summary rather than necessarily retained verbatim. The documentation does not provide a definitive item-by-item list of what survives. Exact instructions, rejected approaches, tool output, or other details might not be present with their original wording or full precision; it would be inaccurate to say that any one category is always preserved or always discarded.

If a requirement must remain exact, do not rely on it appearing in a future summary. Put it in project guidance, a task note, or a version-controlled file, and use Git checkpoints for recoverable code state. These practices reduce the risk of losing important context; they do not guarantee particular compaction behavior.
Choose between /compact, /clear, and resuming
| Need | Action | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Continue the current task as the history grows | Run /compact, or let automatic compaction occur near the context limit |
Keeps a summary to free context; the exact summary contents are not exhaustively specified. Claude Help Center. |

| Keep project conventions available across work | Record durable guidance in CLAUDE.md |
Anthropic describes this file as project context; in-session edits are picked up on the next /compact or /memory opening, or otherwise in the next session. Claude Help Center: Give Claude context. |
| Preserve or recover code state | Use Git commits or other checkpoints | Anthropic’s prompting guidance recommends Git for state tracking and checkpoints. Anthropic prompting best practices. |
How to make important context more durable
Put project-wide rules in CLAUDE.md
Use CLAUDE.md for conventions and instructions that should apply beyond one stretch of chat, rather than leaving them only in conversation history. Anthropic says edits made during a session are picked up the next time /compact or /memory is opened; otherwise they take effect in the next session. Claude Help Center: Give Claude context.

Write task-specific requirements where they can be checked
For constraints that are unique to the current task—such as acceptance criteria, a required interface, or an unresolved decision—keep a concise task note or put the requirement in a relevant file. This is a workflow safeguard, not a claim that Claude Code will always omit such details from a summary.

Conversation summaries are not a substitute for source-control history. Git commits or checkpoints let you inspect and restore code changes independently of what remains in the active conversation. Anthropic recommends Git for tracking state and checkpoints in its prompting best practices.

Claude Code compaction is not API compaction
Anthropic’s API documentation describes API-level compaction options, including on-demand and token-threshold mechanisms marked beta. Those API features are separate from Claude Code’s user-facing session behavior; they do not establish Claude Code’s automatic trigger or the summary instructions it uses.
