There is no single best Vercel AI SDK replacement: the right choice depends on whether you need a model-calling toolkit, an agent orchestration framework, or a place to run your application. As of October 5, 2026, Mastra, LangChain and LangGraph, LlamaIndex Workflows, Pydantic AI, and OpenAI Agents SDK are options to evaluate for different jobs. Hosting is a separate choice; documented options include Cloudflare Workers, Google Cloud Agent Runtime, and Vercel.
First, separate the SDK, framework, gateway, and host
These products sit at different layers, so comparing them as interchangeable SDKs can lead to the wrong decision:

- An SDK provides code-level interfaces for model requests, tools, structured output, or user-facing chat features.
- An agent framework helps organize multi-step work, workflows, state, memory, or delegation.
- A model gateway routes requests to model providers. It can be used alongside an SDK or framework.
- A host runs the application or agent and supplies its deployment environment. Hosting choice does not, by itself, dictate framework choice.
Vercel describes AI SDK Core as a unified API for text generation, structured objects, tool calls, and agent building. AI SDK UI provides framework-agnostic hooks for chat and generative interfaces. Its provider architecture includes first-party integrations and community packages, and supports OpenAI-compatible endpoints and self-hosted models through supported providers. If your only concern is switching model providers, you may be able to keep the SDK and change the provider instead.

Vercel’s AI Gateway integration documentation, last updated September 14, 2026, names frameworks including LangChain, LiteLLM, LlamaIndex, Mastra, and Pydantic AI, and describes the list as non-exhaustive. A different framework therefore does not automatically rule out using Vercel’s gateway.

Vercel AI SDK alternatives by project need
The options below have different scopes. Treat vendor-authored recommendations as starting points, not independent feature evaluations.
| Option | Consider it when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mastra | Your team works in TypeScript and wants a broader application framework with agent workflows and memory. LangChain’s guide recommends it for TypeScript teams seeking workflows, memory, and a Studio environment; Vercel documents a Mastra integration. | Check the current framework APIs, deployment requirements, and whether its workflow and memory features fit your application. |
| LangChain and LangGraph | You want the LangChain ecosystem, or need explicit, stateful, graph-based agent orchestration. LangChain’s 2026 guide distinguishes its general framework from LangGraph’s orchestration role. | Choose based on the actual control flow and state your workload needs; consult current project documentation for implementation and runtime requirements. |
| LlamaIndex Workflows | Your application is document-heavy, data-intensive, or a knowledge assistant. LangChain’s comparison describes LlamaIndex Workflows as document-centric and event-driven. | Confirm that its current workflow and data integrations cover your sources and retrieval design. |
| Pydantic AI | Your team builds in Python and values typed agent interfaces and structured outputs. Vercel lists it among Gateway integrations and describes a native provider integration in its ecosystem documentation. | Check Pydantic AI’s own current documentation for API and feature details before implementation. |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | You are considering a narrowly scoped assistant or delegation workflow where an OpenAI-centered SDK is appropriate. | The use-case characterization comes from LangChain’s vendor-authored comparison, not a neutral evaluation. Confirm current model and deployment requirements in the SDK’s documentation. |
| Google ADK, CrewAI, or Microsoft Agent Framework | You are evaluating, respectively, a GCP-native project, role-based multi-agent work, or a Microsoft-stack project. These use-case descriptions come from LangChain’s 2026 guide. | Check each project’s own current documentation for language support, framework scope, and hosting requirements. |
How to choose between them
Start with the complexity your application actually needs. A direct model call with a few tools may not require a full orchestration framework; multi-step, stateful work may benefit from one. Compare candidates against these practical questions:
Rank #2
- Language and ecosystem: Does the project fit your TypeScript or Python stack and existing frontend and backend?
- Abstraction and control flow: Do you need simple model calls and tools, or explicit workflows, graphs, or delegation?
- Model flexibility: Which native provider integrations or OpenAI-compatible APIs are supported? Do you need gateway routing or self-hosted models?
- State and long-running work: Does the application require memory, durable state, resumability, scheduling, or background execution?
- Hosting fit: Can the intended runtime handle the application’s streaming, networking, storage, and deployment needs?
- Operational evidence: Can you test latency, failure handling, cost, and observability for your own workload?
The available documentation establishes advertised scope and integrations, not an independent winner for performance, reliability, cost, or developer productivity. Use a proof of concept with representative requests and failure cases before committing to an architecture.

The following are documented options to evaluate, not an exhaustive host directory or a performance ranking.
| Host | Documented fit | Questions to check for your deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Workers | Cloudflare documents building full-stack AI applications and agent frameworks on Workers, including its Agents SDK and LangChain. Its Agents model documentation says Workers AI is built in and agents can also call OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or other OpenAI-compatible services. The documentation also covers AI SDK as a unified provider interface and AI Gateway for model routing. | Verify Workers runtime constraints, framework compatibility, streaming behavior, state and storage needs, and access to external services for your specific application. |
| Google Cloud Agent Runtime | Google’s quickstart describes creating, deploying, and testing agents built with LangGraph, LangChain, AG2, or LlamaIndex on Agent Runtime. | Check current region availability, deployment and persistence requirements, and the services the application needs. |
| Vercel | Vercel positions AI SDK and AI Gateway within its application platform. Its framework integration documentation shows that the Gateway can be used with frameworks other than AI SDK. | Confirm that your chosen framework and application design have the runtime and deployment characteristics you need; integrations do not establish identical behavior for every combination. |
Check runtime requirements before committing
A framework integration is not proof that a particular application will fit a host’s constraints. Before choosing a deployment target, verify:
- Framework and language support in the target runtime.
- Request duration and execution limits, including how long-running work is handled.
- Streaming behavior for the model and user interface.
- Background-job, durable-state, and persistence requirements.
- Database and vector-store connectivity, networking, and secrets management.
- Required deployment regions and observability options.
For frequently changing details such as runtime compatibility, regions, and pricing, consult the relevant provider’s current documentation. The available product documentation does not establish a direct price or performance ranking across these hosts.
