Start with security support, not the phone’s age
Android update schedules depend on the exact model and manufacturer. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says most Android devices receive software updates for up to three years after first release, with many brands extending support to as long as seven years. When repair is likely to make sense
- The fault is isolated. A worn battery, damaged screen, or charging-port problem may be repairable without replacing the whole phone. First rule out a faulty cable or charger, case interference, full storage, or a software setting.
- The phone still meets your needs. It should have adequate performance, storage, and app compatibility for the work you expect it to do, as well as a useful period of security support for that use.
- The quote is proportionate to the useful life you expect. Compare the full repair cost with a replacement that meets your needs, and consider how long the repaired phone is realistically likely to remain useful. The phone’s original purchase price is already spent and is not the right benchmark.
- Parts and repair are available on sensible terms. Confirm that the exact part is available, ask whether the repairer stands behind the work, and consider whether the repair involves specialized tools or risks damaging the device.
A battery replacement can be worth exploring when battery wear is the diagnosed fault, but Android phones do not share one universal battery or repair method. Search using the exact make and model, verify the part number and included tools, and compare the difficulty of self-repair with a professional quote. Do not assume every model is user-serviceable.
When replacement is the better choice
- Support has ended for your needs. For a primary phone used for sensitive accounts, prioritize a replacement with a clearly stated security-support period.
- Several significant faults are present. Multiple repairs can add cost without making the phone dependable.
- The repair buys too little useful service. A low quote is not a bargain if performance, compatibility, or another likely fault will soon force replacement anyway.
- The alternative is a weak replacement. A cheap new or refurbished phone that is already near its own support end date may not solve the underlying problem.
There is no evidence-based universal rule such as “replace whenever a repair costs a fixed percentage of the phone’s value.” Local repair prices, replacement markets, model support, and the fault all differ. Decide from the written quote and the specific replacement you would actually buy.

How to compare a repair quote with a replacement
- Identify the device and symptom. Record the make, full model number, approximate age, and what is failing. Eliminate simple causes such as a bad charging cable before ordering parts.
- Check the security-update end date. Use the manufacturer’s official support information for the exact model; do not infer support from brand-wide promises or the phone’s age alone.
- Request a complete repair quote. Ask whether diagnostics, parts, labor, and taxes are included; what part will be used; how long the repair takes; and what repair warranty applies. Ask whether the work may affect water resistance or an existing warranty.
- Select a realistic replacement for comparison. Compare price, condition, performance, warranty, return terms, and remaining security support. For refurbished devices, get the condition grading and warranty in writing.
- Choose by expected useful service, not sunk cost. Repair when one fix plausibly restores a supported phone at a sensible total cost. Replace when support, multiple faults, performance, or repair economics point to a short or unreliable second life.
Parts, repairability, and local rules
For smartphones and tablets covered by EU ecodesign rules, requirements include availability of specified spare parts such as batteries and displays, along with repair-related information. These rules have a defined EU product scope; they do not guarantee worldwide availability, local stock, or an affordable repair for your particular phone. The EU Council describes right-to-repair measures that cover technically repairable goods, including mobile phones, and says member states had to transpose the directive into national legislation by 31 July 2026. Protect your data and decide what happens to the old phone
Back up the phone before service or replacement, and ask the repairer how it handles customer data. If you sell, trade in, donate, or recycle the device, securely erase it first and follow the relevant service or manufacturer instructions.
Repair cost is a real obstacle for many owners: the GSMA’s 2025 consumer survey identified high repair costs as the biggest barrier among respondents who had not repaired a phone. The same report found that three-quarters of surveyed consumers had at least one old handset sitting unused at home.
