There is no single confirmed cause for Netflix getting darker when you pause a video or switch tabs. Netflix’s guidance points viewers to device brightness and HDR settings, but it does not say either setting always causes this specific behavior. The right checks depend on whether you’re watching on a phone, TV, or computer.
Why the image may look darker
Brightness and HDR behavior depend on the playback device and display. On Windows, Microsoft notes that some standard dynamic range (SDR) apps can look darker on an HDR display, so HDR configuration is worth checking. That possibility does not establish that pausing or switching tabs triggers an HDR change.

Check the settings for your device
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- While a Netflix video is playing, tap the video to show the playback controls.

Inspect the TV’s picture settings and the streaming device’s display or HDR settings, if available. Windows computer
Check whether Windows HDR is enabled and whether the display and playback path support Netflix HDR. Microsoft’s note that some SDR apps can look darker on HDR displays makes this a sensible setting to inspect, not a guaranteed fix for dimming on pause or tab switches. Netflix’s Windows HDR guidance describes supported software and hardware requirements, including an HDR-enabled screen; some Windows 11 systems may also require the HEVC extension. The listed Windows Ultra HD and HDR requirements include an internet connection of 15 megabits per second or higher, a playback requirement rather than an explanation for a brightness change. Use the pattern to narrow it down
- It happens on every title: Start with the brightness and HDR controls that apply to your device. Note whether the change occurs only on pause, only after switching tabs, or in both cases.

Record the device and model, operating system, Netflix app or browser and version, display model, and whether HDR is enabled. Also note whether the dimming affects every title and whether it appears only while paused or after switching tabs. Those details help distinguish a device or display setting from a title-specific problem; the official guidance does not establish one cause that applies to every setup.
