Replay the strategy’s fixed rules against historical market data, using only information available at each simulated decision and declaring how orders would have been filled and what costs apply. This is a backtest: it estimates how the rules would have behaved under those conditions, not whether they will make money in the future. Paper trading is a separate forward test using incoming market data without committing real capital.
What a counterfactual test does—and does not—tell you
A counterfactual test asks: if these exact rules had been applied to this historical market data, what decisions and results would they have produced under the assumptions I specify? The rules, data, timing and execution assumptions define the answer. Change one, and the result may change.

Binance describes backtesting as a way to evaluate and compare strategies without risking capital in its 2020 article, Backtest Your Trading Strategy With Binance Historical Data. Basis’s documentation, updated September 14, 2026, makes the key limitation explicit: historical performance under assumptions is not proof of future profitability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a profitable backtest mean the strategy will work live?
No. It means only that the strategy produced a profitable result on the tested data under the specified rules and assumptions. Future prices, liquidity, costs and execution may differ. A profitable result is a reason to investigate further, not a guarantee or a live-trading signal.

Write down the test before running it
Define the hypothesis and rules before tuning parameters. Record enough detail that someone else could reproduce the test and understand what its result covers.
- Market: venue, spot or derivative product, and symbols.
- Scope: timeframe, historical date range and data source.
- Rules: entry and exit conditions, position sizing, and risk limits.
- Execution: order types, signal timing, fill timing, and the fee, spread, slippage and funding assumptions that apply.
- Evaluation plan: which period is for development, which data will be held out, and which outcomes and comparisons will be reported.
Writing these down first makes it harder to quietly alter the rules or assumptions after seeing which choices make the historical result look best.
Build a chronological replay without look-ahead
At every simulated decision, the strategy must see only information that would have been available at that time. Separate when a signal becomes knowable from when an order could be submitted and filled. This is the central safeguard against look-ahead bias, which can make a historical strategy appear to act with knowledge of future prices.

- Specify the signal timestamp. For example, if a rule uses a candle’s closing price, treat the signal as available only after that candle has closed.
- Specify when the order can be placed. Do not fill an order earlier in the same candle using a close that was not yet known. State the next eligible time and the order type.
- Apply the declared fill model. A backtest must model how the order would execute under its assumptions; a recorded market price is not automatically a price the strategy could have obtained.
- Log each decision and fill. Keep timestamps, inputs, signals, intended orders, simulated fills, position changes and costs so surprising results can be traced.
Binance Academy’s What Is Backtesting? and Basis’s backtesting guidance both address look-ahead and timing as important sources of misleading results. A candle-only replay cannot substantiate fine-grained claims about queue position or latency.
Choose data and execution assumptions that fit the strategy
Use data at a resolution and level of detail appropriate to the strategy’s holding period and order behavior. OHLCV candles may be adequate for some slower strategies, but they do not show the full sequence of trades or order-book activity within a candle. Binance’s 2020 historical-data article describes tick and order-book data as useful for work that is more sensitive to execution. Perpetual and other relevant derivatives tests may also need historical funding data.
Set costs and fills before inspecting the result. Include applicable venue fees, spread and slippage; for perpetuals or other leveraged derivatives, account for funding where applicable. Match the fill model to the strategy’s timeframe and order types as closely as the available data permits. If the needed liquidity, order-book or funding history is unavailable, state that limitation rather than implying the simulation captures it.

Separate rule discovery from evaluation
Use an earlier training or development slice to reject and refine candidate rules. Once selected, freeze the logic and parameters before opening the held-out period. Evaluate that untouched slice rather than continuing to tune against it. If the real method would recalibrate over time, use rolling walk-forward windows: develop on past data, freeze the rule for the next window, evaluate it there, then move forward and repeat.
Record the full search process or all tested variants, not only the best run. Selecting a winner after trying many alternatives can make ordinary historical noise look like a durable edge. Basis’s guidance recommends separating development from out-of-sample evaluation and using walk-forward testing; it is practical platform documentation, not independent evidence that a particular strategy works.

- Trade count and distribution: number of trades, their outcomes and whether results depend on a small number of trades.

- Exposure: how much time the strategy is in the market and, for derivatives, the relevant position or leverage exposure.
- Robustness: results across held-out and walk-forward windows, symbols and market regimes, plus sensitivity to plausible cost and fill assumptions.
Treat results as weak evidence if they disappear after costs, rely on one exceptional winner, come mainly from one symbol or market regime, or collapse when a parameter changes slightly. There is no universal minimum trade count or paper-trading duration established by the cited sources; the sample size and uncertainty have to be judged in context.
Use paper trading as a different, optional test
Backtesting replays historical data; paper trading runs the unchanged rules forward against incoming data without committing real capital. It can reveal whether the live signal and order workflow behaves as expected, but neither paper trading nor an exchange demo proves future profitability. A sandbox’s simulated balances, fills and market behavior are not equivalent to actual execution.
Recommended Free Tools
Gemini’s developer documentation describes a sandbox with test-fund balances and simulated order-book activity, and says to use the API to test strategies before connecting to production. Treat sandbox results as evidence about that sandbox’s behavior, not as a promise of production fills.
| Test | What it uses | What it can help assess | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backtest | Historical data replayed under fixed rules and declared assumptions | How the rules would have behaved in the selected historical sample | Future profitability or execution at the modeled price in live markets |
| Paper trading or sandbox | Forward incoming data and simulated orders or balances | Signal timing and parts of the order/API workflow in that environment | Equivalent behavior, fills or results with real capital |
If you proceed to paper trading, keep the rules unchanged and log signals, intended orders, simulated fills and any differences from the backtest. That makes the forward run a check of the declared process rather than another opportunity to silently revise it.
