What order should you play the games in?
For the intended continuity, play the trilogy in release order: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. Decisions made in one game can affect the next, so beginning with the first game lets you experience more of the progression the trilogy was designed around. The collection includes Mass Effect 3
Mass Effect Legendary Edition contains the single-player base content for all three games and, according to EA, over 40 DLC items across the trilogy. You do not need to own or finish a separate copy of Mass Effect 3 before starting the collection. Can you start directly with Mass Effect 3?
Yes. It is an option if you deliberately want to skip the earlier games and accept missing context. You will begin at the trilogy’s conclusion without having played through the earlier relationships, events, and decisions that inform it. The game offers ways to establish some prior choices, but they are not a substitute for experiencing the earlier stories.

PlayStation Blog’s 2021 explanation says a player who only plays Mass Effect 3 must take just about every available option to be eligible for an ending without massive galactic losses. That is a publisher explanation from 2021, not a guarantee for every possible setup: PlayStation Blog, May 14, 2021. You can choose whether to read more about the game’s outcomes, but there is no need to seek out ending details to decide what order to play.

Can you make earlier choices if you skip a game?
The optional Mass Effect: Genesis comic experience appears before Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, letting you select choices from earlier games. It helps establish continuity when you have not played a previous entry, but it does not provide that game’s full narrative. EA describes the feature in its choices-matter overview.

How to choose your starting point
- Choose the first game if this is your first time with the trilogy or you want to understand how the story and decisions develop.
- Choose Mass Effect 3 only if reaching the finale matters more to you than following the prior story, and you are comfortable with gaps in context.
- Choose Mass Effect 2 only if you are also willing to use its Genesis setup for earlier choices; it is still a later entry, not a complete replacement for the first game.
