1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want to spend less than the price of a new budget phone, compare a refurbished handset, a privately used phone, a discounted older model sold new, and repairing the phone you already own. The best choice depends on the exact device and seller: check its condition, battery, software support, network compatibility, total cost, and the protections available where you buy.
How refurbished, used and older-new phones differ
In French consumer guidance, a refurbished product is a used item whose functions have been tested and which may have been repaired or restored before resale. An ordinary used item has no such process implied by its label. These are practical definitions from France, not universal legal definitions. A “refurbished” label alone does not tell you what was tested, whether the battery was replaced, or how much cosmetic wear remains. Read the listing’s specific description and ask about details it leaves out. French DGCCRF guidance on refurbished products and French Ministry of Economy guidance on second-hand and refurbished goods explain these distinctions.

| Option | Potential advantage | What to check | Best fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refurbished phone | A professional process may include full-function testing and repair or restoration. | What was tested or replaced; condition grade; battery policy; seller; warranty and returns. | You want a pre-owned price and a documented seller process. |
| Used phone | May cost less, including when bought from a private seller. | Function, battery, damage, ownership and network status, recourse if something is wrong, seller type and local protections. | You can inspect carefully and accept more uncertainty. |
| Older model sold new | New condition and the seller’s terms for new products may be attractive at a discount. | Availability, price, remaining OS and security updates, battery age if old stock, carrier compatibility and warranty. | The exact model still meets your needs and has adequate support remaining. |
| Repair your current phone | Could extend use without replacing the whole handset. | Diagnosis, parts availability, total quote, repair warranty and whether the phone will receive needed updates. | Your current phone remains suitable and the repair cost makes sense. |
How to choose the right option
Choose refurbished for a documented process
Refurbished can be a good middle ground if the seller explains its checks and repairs, describes the actual device’s cosmetic condition, and sets out its battery policy, return terms and warranty. Ask what was tested and what was replaced; do not infer a battery standard from the word “refurbished.”
Choose used if you can manage the uncertainty
A privately sold phone may be cheaper, but the label does not establish that it was tested or repaired. Inspect it in person where possible, verify that it works with your carrier, and establish what recourse you have if a fault appears. A private sale and a business sale may carry different rights.

Choose older-new only if support still fits
An older model sold new may suit you if it has the features you need, its battery has not deteriorated in storage, and its remaining software and security support is long enough for your plans. Check the manufacturer’s current commitment for the exact model and region; no particular model’s support end date is established here.
Consider repairing before replacing
If your existing phone still meets your needs, compare a repair quote with the full cost of replacement. Parts access and repair information can affect that calculation, but rules requiring access do not guarantee that a part is in stock or that a repair is economical.

Check these details before paying
- Identify the exact handset. Confirm its generation and storage capacity rather than relying on a family name or broad listing title.
- Read the condition description. Check the description for the actual refurbished or used unit, including cosmetic marks and any stated defects.
- Ask about testing and repairs. Find out which functions were checked and what was repaired or replaced. For the battery, seek an explicit condition threshold, replacement statement or a return option.
- Test the device. During the seller’s inspection or return period, check the screen, cameras, buttons, speakers, charging port, microphones, biometric functions and wireless connectivity.
- Verify network compatibility. Confirm compatibility with your carrier, SIM or eSIM needs, and local network bands.
- Check the seller and terms. Establish whether you are buying from a business or private individual, then read the warranty, return and dispute terms before paying.
- Check software support. Look up the manufacturer’s current OS and security-update support for the exact model and region.
- Compare total cost. Add likely battery or repair costs and any needed case or screen protector. Compare that total with an older model bought new and other refurbished offers.
Why support, repairability and total cost matter
A low purchase price is not the whole value calculation. A handset with little support remaining, a battery that needs replacing or a costly repair may be less attractive than a pricier option with a longer useful life. The Vodafone Institute’s 2025 report identifies price, condition, warranty period and expected software-update availability among factors in refurbished-phone decisions. Its report says 40% of surveyed consumers definitely or probably planned to consider a refurbished smartphone for their next purchase; that figure describes the survey, not all consumers. The regulation specifies access to certain parts for at least seven years after the end of a model’s placement on the market, subject to its scope, dates and conditions. This does not mean every older phone is economical to repair or that a seller has a part available. See Regulation (EU) 2023/1670.

Consumer rights depend on where and from whom you buy
Do not assume that a private sale has the same protections as a purchase from a business. French guidance says statutory conformity protections apply to purchases from a professional seller and cover new and second-hand goods, while private-individual sales are excluded from that particular guarantee. EU consumer guidance likewise distinguishes trader purchases from private sales. These are jurisdiction-specific explanations, not a universal rule; check the law where you buy and confirm the seller’s status. Your Europe explains EU shopping rights.
As of 31 July 2026, the European Commission says EU right-to-repair measures are applying. Its summary says consumers can request repair of technically repairable products, including mobile phones, and that choosing repair within the liability period extends the legal guarantee by at least 12 months. The regulation and national implementation govern the details; this does not mean every phone can be repaired or that every repair is free. Read the European Commission’s right-to-repair summary.
