Apple Upgrade is a lease, not an automatic path to owning an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Offered in the United States through Klarna, the program lets eligible customers make monthly payments and then return the device, start another lease, or use a purchase option under their agreement. Whether that fits depends on how long you keep devices, whether you want to own yours, and the return and early-exit terms.
1. Apple Upgrade is a lease, not the old iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple Upgrade is provided by Klarna and is available through Apple’s online store, Apple Store app, and US Apple Store locations. The lease does not make you the owner automatically: at the end, you return the device or choose another option allowed by the agreement. Apple’s program page and its FAQ describe the current terms.

This is different from Apple’s legacy US iPhone Upgrade Program, which was a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan through Citizens One, bundled with AppleCare+ and carrier activation. Under that loan, members who made the required payments owned the phone at the end. The old program’s terms should not be applied to a new Klarna lease. Apple says Apple Upgrade is for US residents, excluding US territories. Shipping or store pickup must be within the eligible US area. It is not a program to assume is available outside that geography.

3. Lease lengths depend on the device category
Apple lists these term options, while noting that eligible models and availability vary. Confirm the options for the specific device at checkout.

4. Starting payments are examples, not a personal quote
Apple’s July 2026 announcement gave starting monthly lease payments of $17.99 for iPhone, $11.99 for Apple Watch, $24.99 for Mac, and $11.99 for iPad. These announcement examples exclude taxes and can vary with the device selected and any trade-in value; they are not guaranteed current prices.
Apple also illustrated how term length affects a payment for particular configurations: an 11-inch, 256GB iPad Pro with a $1,199 purchase price was shown at $24.99 per month for 36 months or $31.99 for 24 months. A 14-inch MacBook Pro with a $1,999 purchase price was shown at $38.99 per month for 36 months or $53.99 for 24 months. Those are Apple’s stated examples, not a general price rule or a full comparison of what leasing costs versus buying.

5. Applying requires information and approval
Apple lists these application requirements: US residency, legal age, a Social Security number or ITIN, an accepted credit or debit card, an Apple Account in good standing, a Klarna Account, and access to text-message security codes. Apple says the application uses a soft credit check that will not affect your credit score, but approval is not guaranteed.
6. iPhone leases require an eligible carrier
For an iPhone lease, Apple requires you to select an eligible carrier: AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Prepaid plans are not eligible. Apple says a leased iPhone is unlocked, subject to carrier terms. Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch leases do not require a carrier connection.

7. Leaving or upgrading early can mean paying the balance
Apple says early upgrade or early termination requires payment of the remaining monthly payments plus applicable taxes. That makes the lease less flexible than simply stopping payments when you no longer want the device. Check the specific agreement before committing if you may need to leave early.

8. The device must be returned in good working condition
Returning the device is part of the lease. Apple says it must be in good working condition and warns that damage fees may apply if it is lost, stolen, or not returned as required. AppleCare can help avoid damage fees, but it does not guarantee that Apple will accept a returned device without charges. Read the agreement’s return and damage conditions, and budget for any protection you choose separately.

9. Decide what you will do at the end of the lease
Apple describes returning the device and starting a new lease, leaving the program after returning it, or purchasing the device under the agreement’s purchase option. Its program page also describes a month-to-month extension of up to six months; if you take no action after that period, a purchase charge may apply. The amount and timing are agreement-specific, so check the Klarna lease rather than assuming a standard buyout.
10. Current iPhone Upgrade Program members keep their existing loan terms
Apple says existing iPhone Upgrade Program loan agreements remain active. Members can keep paying until the 24-month term ends; after the required payments, they own the phone. Eligible members can then consider Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments, an outright purchase, or carrier financing. Those alternatives have different contract and ownership terms; do not treat a new lease as a continuation of the old loan.
How to compare leasing with buying or financing
Apple’s materials do not establish a universal cost winner. Compare the same device and configuration across the options you are actually considering, using your intended time with it rather than just the advertised monthly amount.

Include any trade-in effect and the cost of protection you want.
- Ownership: Decide whether you want the device to be yours at the end or are comfortable returning it or paying the agreement’s purchase option.
- Flexibility: Include the remaining-payment requirement for early exit and any carrier or service commitment that applies.
- Return responsibility: Account for the required condition, loss or damage exposure, and return process.
- Upgrade rhythm: A lease may suit someone who expects to change devices on a fixed schedule; buying may suit someone who wants to keep a device longer. The numbers and terms for your specific choices determine the trade-off.
