Consider a new phone when your current one no longer meets a specific need—or when repair costs and ongoing limitations outweigh the realistic cost of upgrading.
Start with the problem, not the phone’s age
Write down what is prompting you to consider an upgrade: short battery life, too little storage, damage, poor performance, a camera or display limitation, or missing software support. A replacement is worthwhile when it solves a recurring problem you actually have; a newer model by itself is not a reason to spend.

Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report says iOS 26 extends support back to iPhone 11 (2019). That is a statement about this release, not a guarantee of future support or identical features on every compatible iPhone. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for your exact model, and confirm that the features you rely on work on it.
Check whether a repair would restore the phone’s usefulness
Battery wear
Look at battery health in Settings and assess whether battery life is actually disrupting your day. Apple’s guidance on genuine iPhone batteries explains battery-health information and service options. Depending on your location, replacement may be available through an Apple Store, an Apple Authorised Service Provider, or an Apple Repair Centre. Request a quote for your precise model and region; service availability and price vary.

Other faults and limitations
For a cracked screen, unreliable buttons, charging problems, or another fault, get a repair estimate before deciding. Also consider issues a repair will not address: for example, a battery replacement will not add storage or provide a camera capability your current model lacks. Compare the repair’s cost with how long you expect to keep using the phone and whether it resolves the problem that matters to you.
Compare the real cost of keeping and replacing
Use the repair quote and the full cost of the replacement—not just its advertised monthly payment. Include taxes, financing or lease charges, any remaining balance on your current phone, and the trade-in credit you can realistically receive. If you keep the phone, account for the repair and any continuing inconvenience or limitations.

Apple says trade-in value depends on the device and its condition. Its Apple Trade In terms explain that the value can be confirmed or revised after inspection, and how credit is handled depends on how you pay. Treat an initial estimate as conditional rather than guaranteed.
Financing and upgrade arrangements also depend on where you live and which terms are available to you. Apple’s July 2026 announcement of Apple Upgrade describes a US launch; it is not evidence that the same option or terms apply in other countries. Compare the total payable amount and contract conditions wherever you shop.

Decide whether a newer model solves a need you have
Compare your current iPhone with the candidate model on the points that affect your everyday use: battery endurance, storage, camera, display, speed, size, and network compatibility. Apple’s iPhone lineup and US purchase page show current products and purchasing information, but prices, availability, and trade-in offers can change. Check the terms for your market and the exact model you are considering.
- If your only recurring complaint is battery life, price a battery replacement before replacing the whole phone.
- If you regularly run out of storage or need a capability your model lacks, compare a new model with enough capacity or the feature you need.
- If the phone is dependable, supported for your required use, and a repair is cheaper than replacement, keeping it avoids paying for features you may not use.
- If it is no longer secure for your needs, unreliable, or unable to handle essential tasks, weigh replacement against the cost and practical limits of repair.
If you replace it, prepare the old iPhone safely
Before selling, giving away, or trading in the device, follow Apple’s current iPhone preparation instructions for your software version. The guide covers backing up, signing out of iCloud and the App Store, and erasing personal content. Do not hand over a phone containing data or accounts you have not removed.
