Battery saver can delay notifications, background updates, and location tracking—or pause apps outright in its most aggressive mode. First check whether the problem disappears when battery saver is off; then adjust the specific app or power-saving setting responsible. Android behavior and menu names vary by device and software version, so use the manufacturer-specific examples below as guides rather than universal paths.
Why battery saver can make apps appear to stop working
Power-saving modes reduce work while a device is idle or an app is in the background. An app may therefore refresh only when opened, send alerts late, or stop updating location when the screen is off. On some devices, a more aggressive mode can pause apps entirely. Android leaves many of these restrictions to device manufacturers, so the details differ by model and software version (Android power management).

Google says Pixel Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications (Google Pixel Adaptive Battery guidance). Motorola describes deferred app refresh and screen-off location limits in Standard Battery Saver, while Maximum Battery Saver can pause most apps (Motorola Battery Saver; Motorola Maximum Battery Saver). A delayed alert alone does not establish that the app is broken.

- Identify what stops working. Note whether the issue is late notifications, background syncing, location tracking, network access, or the app becoming unavailable.
- Temporarily turn battery saver off. Check whether the behavior returns. This comparison can point to a power-saving restriction, but does not prove every similar failure has the same cause.
- Test after each later change. Recheck the specific function that failed before changing another setting. This helps isolate which restriction matters.
Allow the affected app to run in the background
Open the app’s system settings and look for controls named App battery usage, Allow background usage, battery optimization, background restriction, or a manufacturer-specific sleep list. The wording and path vary.

Google Pixel
Google documents per-app background usage at Settings > Apps > [app] > App battery usage. Review the available background-use control for that app; exact options can depend on the Android version. Google cautions that turning off battery optimization can let an app run more while unused and consume more battery (Google Pixel Adaptive Battery guidance).
Samsung Galaxy
Check Settings > Battery > Background usage limits for Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps. Samsung says deeply sleeping apps work only when opened. If an app needs timely alerts or continuous background activity, remove it from the applicable sleep list or add it to Never sleeping apps. Samsung warns that apps on this list may use more battery in the background (Samsung sleeping apps guidance).

Search Settings for the app’s battery or background controls, or consult the manufacturer’s support guidance for your model. Android does not guarantee identical restrictions or menu labels across brands.

Check the active battery-saving level
Some phones offer multiple levels of power saving. The active level may restrict more than one app setting, so check it before adding exceptions.

Check notification settings separately
Battery permissions are only one possible cause of missing alerts. Confirm that system notifications and the relevant notification categories are enabled, then check the app’s own notification settings and Do Not Disturb. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also calls out notification permissions and settings alongside battery-related sleep restrictions (Samsung notification troubleshooting).
Choose the smallest useful exception
If an app needs continuous syncing, location in the background, or timely alerts, allow the specific background behavior or remove it from a sleep list rather than turning off battery saving for the whole device. Keep the trade-off in mind: an app that runs more while unused can consume more battery. After the change, test the affected function again.

If the problem continues
- Install available updates for the app and device software.
- Restart the device and check the same symptom again. Samsung’s device guidance includes updates and restart as troubleshooting steps (Samsung Secure Folder guidance; Samsung diagnostics and responsiveness guidance).
- If the issue persists, contact the device manufacturer or app developer. Provide the device model, software version, app version, and exact symptom so support can distinguish a power restriction from an app or device fault.
