The right answer depends on your apps, project sizes, displays, and expansion needs—not simply which desktop has the higher specifications.
Apple announced the current lineup and U.S. starting prices on September 22, 2026. Its performance claims are manufacturer comparisons, not independent head-to-head test results. Apple’s announcement is the basis for the lineup figures below.

|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini with M6 | $899 | 32GB unified memory; starts with 16GB | Lower-cost compact desktop for everyday, development, and many creative tasks |
| Mac mini with M5 Pro | $1,699 | 64GB unified memory | More demanding creative or technical work while staying in the mini line |
| Mac Studio with M5 Max | $2,499 | 128GB unified memory | Professional work that benefits from higher memory capacity or Studio’s published connectivity |
| Mac Studio with M5 Ultra | $5,499 | 512GB unified memory | Workloads that can use very high memory capacity and the top-end configuration |
Apple said the 512GB Mac Studio configuration was expected in late October 2026. Check current availability before ordering. Apple also lists up to 307GB/s memory bandwidth for the M5 Pro mini and up to 1.2TB/s for the M5 Ultra Studio. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not a prediction of how much faster a particular app will run.

Should you buy a Mac mini?
Choose a Mac mini when your actual workload fits the configuration and the lower starting price and small desktop footprint matter. Apple positions the mini for everyday users, students, developers, creative enthusiasts, and businesses. Those are broad use cases, not a guarantee that every app or project will feel equally fast.
- M6 mini: starts at $899 with 16GB unified memory and can be configured to 32GB. Apple says its CPU performance is up to 40 percent faster than a specified prior-generation M4 Mac mini configuration; that is Apple’s comparison, not an independent test.
- M5 Pro mini: starts at $1,699 and can be configured with up to 64GB unified memory. Consider it if your workload needs more headroom than the M6 model offers but does not require the Studio’s higher memory options.
Before choosing either mini, check its exact technical specifications for the number and type of displays and ports you plan to use. Apple’s September 2026 announcement gives detailed multi-display and Thunderbolt 5 information for Studio, but not equivalent Mac mini detail for a direct port-by-port comparison.

When is a Mac Studio worth the extra cost?
The Studio makes sense when you can identify a real need for its higher memory ceiling, professional-workload capacity, or announced connectivity. Apple describes it for professional work such as 3D, motion graphics, video, and on-device AI. Match that positioning to your own software and project demands; “professional” alone does not show that a Studio will improve your particular workflow.

- M5 Max Studio: starts at $2,499, has an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB unified memory.
- M5 Ultra Studio: starts at $5,499, offers up to a 36-core CPU, up to an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB unified memory. Apple says this version offers up to 4.3 times faster AI performance than its stated prior-generation comparison; treat that as an Apple claim, not independent comparative testing.
Apple says Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra supports up to eight displays, or up to four Studio Display XDR at full 5K resolution and 120Hz. Apple also says both models include Thunderbolt 5 with transfers up to 120Gb/s, citing external storage, PCIe expansion chassis, and hubs as use cases. Confirm compatibility and configuration details for the devices you intend to attach.

- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
How should you compare the total cost?
Compare the starting prices, then account for the complete setup you need. A desktop buyer who already owns a display, keyboard, mouse, and suitable storage has a different outlay from someone building a workstation from scratch. Add only the peripherals and storage your setup actually requires; Apple’s product announcement does not establish a universal accessory bundle or total system price.
The gap between the $1,699 M5 Pro mini and $2,499 M5 Max Studio is $800 at Apple’s announced U.S. starting prices. That difference may be worthwhile if the Studio’s memory ceiling or connectivity solves a specific constraint. If it does not, spending more on the computer alone does not establish a benefit for your work.
Use this decision checklist before ordering
- List your main apps and project sizes. Identify whether you routinely work with large video timelines, 3D scenes, motion graphics, local AI models, or other demanding projects.
- Check memory needs against the configuration ceilings. The M6 mini reaches 32GB, the M5 Pro mini 64GB, the M5 Max Studio 128GB, and the M5 Ultra Studio 512GB, according to Apple’s September 2026 announcement.
- Count displays and expansion devices. For Studio, Apple publishes support for up to eight displays and Thunderbolt 5. For mini, verify the exact selected configuration’s technical specifications rather than assuming equivalent support.
- Price the whole setup. Include any display, external storage, or other peripheral you need, and compare that total with your budget.
- Check the exact configuration and availability. In particular, Apple had said the 512GB Studio configuration was expected in late October 2026; verify whether it is available where you plan to buy.
What Apple’s performance figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s September 2026 announcement gives selected comparisons, including the M6 mini’s “up to 40 percent” CPU claim against a specified earlier M4 mini configuration and the M5 Ultra Studio’s “up to 4.3 times” AI performance claim against a stated prior-generation comparison. They are manufacturer claims with comparison context, not independent results across every app. The announcement does not establish a general head-to-head winner for every workload, so use your software’s actual requirements and the configuration limits to decide.
