MacRumors reports that macOS 27 also removed the systemwide off switch found in earlier versions. That creates a clear storage and user-control question; whether Apple should add model removal to protect Mac sales remains unproven.
How to turn off Apple Intelligence on a Mac
Apple’s current macOS 27 support guide documents feature-level controls. Users can turn off Siri AI, switch to Siri Classic, and disable selected features such as Messages summaries and Mail smart replies. The guide also describes restricting access through Screen Time.
Those controls switch off features; they are not documented as a way to remove Apple Intelligence model files. MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026, that macOS 27 Golden Gate removed the systemwide toggle and that downloaded models remain when individual features are turned off. That account describes macOS 27 behavior; Apple’s guide does not endorse model removal.
Apple Intelligence storage: requirements and reported readings
MacRumors reported in 2026 that Apple’s stated storage requirement is up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB on other supported Macs. These are reported requirements, not a promise that every Mac will show those exact amounts in System Settings.

MacRumors also reported individual Storage readings of 20.67 GB on one M4 Pro Mac mini and 22.42 GB on one M3 MacBook Air. Those examples are not representative measurements of all Macs. The publication noted that Apple’s support document does not explain whether its “up to” requirement and the Storage category in System Settings are directly comparable.
Official controls and reported model-removal workaround
| Option | Scope | Storage result | Authority and durability | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple’s documented settings | Turn off Siri AI, switch to Siri Classic, disable selected app features, or restrict access with Screen Time. | Apple’s guide does not describe removing model files. | Documented by Apple for macOS 27. | Settings can be changed again in the relevant controls. |
| RemoveMacAI, as described by MacRumors | Reported to remove models, block redownloads, and disable Apple Intelligence-dependent features across macOS. | MacRumors reported about 12 GB freed, with some users reporting more; this is not an Apple benchmark or a guaranteed result. | Unofficial third-party open-source utility; the reported method may stop working after a macOS change. | MacRumors says the utility includes a revert command. |
According to MacRumors’ October 5, 2026 report, RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile to switch off Apple’s asset-management service, removes model files, and redirects attempts to download them again. The report says the approach does not require disabling System Integrity Protection or manually deleting files from protected system locations.

The same report says the tool disables Siri-related AI features, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, summaries, smart replies, inline predictions, Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, and Xcode predictive completion. It is not affiliated with Apple, and MacRumors does not endorse it. The developer’s reported caveat is that some configuration-profile restriction keys were deprecated by Apple in macOS 26.4 but still worked in macOS 27.0.1; a future update could change that.
Does the missing off switch affect Mac sales?
There is no evidence in the cited sales results that Apple Intelligence storage or removal controls have affected Mac purchases. Apple’s Q3 2026 Form 10-Q reports Mac net sales of $10.352 billion for the three months ended June 27, 2026, up 29% year over year. Apple attributed the Mac sales increase for the quarter and nine-month period to higher laptop sales.

Apple’s July 30, 2026 results release said iPhone, Mac, and Services revenue set new June-quarter records. CEO Tim Cook said Apple had its “strongest June quarter ever,” with double-digit revenue growth across iPhone, Mac, and Services and in every geographic segment. Those aggregate results do not show whether customers objected to the missing off switch, or whether sales would be higher with official model removal.

Apple presents Apple Intelligence as a platform feature built around on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, as described in its June 8, 2026 announcement. That architecture explains how Apple says the system works; it does not establish that every Mac owner wants the feature installed or that removal would change buying decisions.

Official model removal would address a distinct user concern from feature toggles: whether people can reclaim local storage and keep models from returning. The missing control is a product-policy issue worth watching, but the claim that Apple may need it to protect sales is still a hypothesis, not a conclusion supported by the reported sales data.
