ShellCanvas is an open-source desktop application that puts SFTP file browsing, SSH terminals, and a text editor for each remote host into a separate graphical workspace. It runs on your own computer and connects to the server’s existing SSH service. The project says nothing needs to be installed on the server.
It is also an early preview. Its Windows installers are not code-signed, the project says Linux client support is not yet validated, and macOS SSH workflows are not yet validated either. The useful question is whether it works on the specific client and server platforms you use, not whether it is a settled replacement for your current tools.

What ShellCanvas does
The application organizes remote work by host. Each machine you connect to gets its own set of windows, folders, and terminal output, and you switch between hosts inside the same app. The goal is to keep related tasks, such as inspecting files, editing a configuration, and running a command, visible in one place rather than spread across separate windows.

Each connected host keeps its own windows and state. Switching hosts changes the workspace rather than opening another instance of the program, so a web server, a database box, and a build machine can each have their own arrangement of open items.

Files over SFTP
The file manager browses and manages remote files through SFTP. You can queue file and folder transfers, watch their progress, and cancel them. According to the project’s README, ShellCanvas avoids overwriting an existing item during transfers.
SSH terminals
You can open several independent shell sessions, each in a movable window. These are ordinary SSH shells, so the terminal side of the workflow does not depend on the file features.

Text editing with a conflict check
The editor opens UTF-8 text files up to 256 KiB. Before saving, ShellCanvas checks whether the remote file has changed since you opened it. On servers that support atomic replacement, it uses that method to write the file, which reduces the chance of leaving a half-written file behind. Files larger than 256 KiB are outside what the editor is designed to handle, so use a command-line tool for those.

Installable apps and themes
ShellCanvas can install apps and themes from a public GitHub repository or from a package file. Before an app runs, you review the access it requests. On Windows, installed apps run in an isolated frame that has only the access you approved. Separate apps, themes, and adapters may carry their own licenses.
No remote agent
The application runs locally. It uses the server’s SSH service for connections and SFTP for file operations. The project’s own wording for this is “Nothing to install on the server.” There is no ShellCanvas agent or daemon on the remote side to maintain, update, or remove.
How connections and host trust work
Adding a server is a short sequence:
- Add the host manually, or import an entry from
~/.ssh/config. - Choose the sign-in method: a private key or a password.
- On first connection to a new host, review the host key fingerprint shown before you sign in.
- On later connections, ShellCanvas checks the host key against OpenSSH
known_hostsand its own trust store. If the key has changed, the connection is blocked.
According to the README, passwords and key passphrases are never saved. These are behaviors the project documents. They have not been confirmed by an independent security audit, so the same caution applies as with any new tool that handles SSH credentials. OpenSSH describes SSH as a protocol suite that provides encryption for services such as remote login and file transfer; that describes the protocol, not ShellCanvas’s own implementation.
Platform support and maturity
Support depends on two sides of the connection: the computer running ShellCanvas and the server you connect to. The table reflects the project’s own status reporting in 2026. It can change with releases, so check the current project status before you rely on any row.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Area | Status as reported by the project | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows client | x64 NSIS and MSI installers are released but not code-signed | Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning during installation. Requires Microsoft Edge WebView2, which is included with Windows 11. |
| macOS client | Builds from source. Launch, layout, and Settings confirmed on an Intel Mac running Catalina | SSH workflows on the Mac client are not validated. |
| Linux client | Client support not validated yet | Treat Linux as untested for the client itself. |
| Ubuntu server | File, terminal, editing, and transfer checks reported as validated | The best-documented server platform in the project’s status table. |
| macOS server | File browsing and a live shell reported as validated | Other operations on macOS servers are not stated as validated. |
| Windows OpenSSH server | Not validated | Not established. Test before relying on it. |
The project also notes that not every operation has been validated on every server platform. A server being reachable over SSH is not enough; the file operations need SFTP, which the project says OpenSSH provides.
Build requirements
To build from source, the README lists Node.js 22 or later, Rust 1.93 or later, and the Tauri prerequisites for your platform.

Quick Recap
- Platform readiness. Does your client operating system and your server operating system both fall in a row of the table above that matches your intended use?
- Workflow fit. Do you want host-specific windows that hold files, terminals, and editing together, or mainly a fast terminal? If it is the latter, a dedicated SSH client may serve you better.
- File handling. Does SFTP support cover your transfers, and do your editing needs stay within UTF-8 text files of 256 KiB or less?
- Trust practice. Does the documented fingerprint review, changed-key blocking, and no-save credential behavior fit how your team manages keys? Verify these against the version you install.
- Extensions. Would the app and theme system help your work, and are you comfortable with a young SDK and a preview-stage ecosystem?
