For a watch that combines training tools with hiking navigation, Garmin’s Forerunner 965 is the more training-oriented option in this shortlist; the fēnix 8 is the more outdoor-focused multisport line. Neither is a universal winner, and the available specifications do not support a fair ranking against Suunto, COROS, Polar or other brands. Choose by the activities you track, the GPS mode and outing length you need, and the exact watch configuration.

The shortlist: two Garmin watches for different priorities

Watch Best fit Navigation and training Battery figures from Garmin Key qualification
Garmin Forerunner 965 Runners and triathletes who also hike and want training insights. Garmin lists built-in maps, multi-band GPS, training readiness and hiking activity support. The product page specifies an AMOLED display and 5 ATM water rating. Garmin’s watch comparison Up to 23 days in smartwatch mode and up to 31 hours in GPS-only mode, according to Garmin’s Singapore product page. Garmin product specifications These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Do not assume the GPS-only figure applies to multi-band GPS, music playback or every settings combination; Garmin says actual battery life depends on enabled features. Forerunner 965 owner manual
Garmin fēnix 8 series Hikers and multisport users who place greater emphasis on outdoor use. Garmin describes the series as multisport and lists built-in maps, multi-band GPS and 10 ATM water rating for selected models. Garmin’s watch comparison Series-wide battery figures are not stated here. The fēnix 8 range includes variants; specifications and battery life depend on the particular model.
Garmin fēnix 8 47 mm solar People considering the specific 47 mm solar configuration and its listed long-duration GPS mode. Solar charging and a Max Battery GPS mode are identified on Garmin’s Malaysia product page. Garmin product specifications Up to 21 days in smartwatch mode, or 28 days with solar; up to 132 hours in Max Battery GPS mode, or 283 hours with solar, according to Garmin. These “up to” estimates apply to the 47 mm solar model and the named modes; the figures should not be applied to other fēnix 8 configurations or treated as a direct comparison with the Forerunner’s GPS-only estimate.

Which one fits your training and hiking?

Choose the Forerunner 965 if training is the priority

Garmin positions the Forerunner 965 as a running and triathlon GPS smartwatch. Its listed training readiness, built-in maps, multi-band GPS and hiking activity support make it a plausible one-watch choice for someone whose regular training is running or triathlon but who also wants mapping features for hikes. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; the cited sources do not independently assess map detail, GPS accuracy or route-following quality.

Consider the fēnix 8 if outdoor versatility comes first

Garmin presents the fēnix 8 as a multisport GPS line with maps and multi-band GPS. The 47 mm solar model’s listed Max Battery GPS estimates may matter to hikers planning long GPS-tracked outings, but those figures belong to that particular solar configuration and mode. Check the exact fēnix variant rather than assuming series-wide specifications.

Do not treat this shortlist as a market-wide ranking

The available product evidence is strongest for these Garmin models and does not establish how they compare with current Suunto, COROS, Polar or other watches. A recent TechRadar reviewer describes using a fēnix 8 on an 11-day Everest Base Camp trek and a five-day Cumbria Way hike, including discussion of maps and activity features. That is one reviewer’s account, not evidence of typical battery life or performance for all hikers. TechRadar’s 2026 field review

How to choose a GPS watch for hiking and training

  1. Start with your training. Identify the training and recovery information you will actually use. Garmin lists training readiness for the Forerunner 965 and advanced training features among the compared watches, but a feature list alone does not establish which watch’s training guidance will suit you.
  2. Decide whether built-in maps matter. If you want mapping on the watch as well as GPS tracking, both cited Garmin lines list built-in maps and multi-band GPS. The sources do not measure map detail, GPS accuracy or navigation quality, so do not use those specifications as proof of comparative performance.
  3. Compare battery in the mode you expect to use. A smartwatch-mode estimate is not an outing estimate, and GPS-only, Max Battery GPS and solar-assisted figures are different conditions. Match the model, GPS mode and solar configuration to your plans; settings such as GPS features and connected sensors can affect actual battery life.
  4. Check fit, display and water rating on the exact variant. The Forerunner 965 page specifies AMOLED and 5 ATM; Garmin’s comparison lists 10 ATM for selected fēnix 8 models. Consider the display you prefer, the watch’s size and the water rating for the exact model, rather than assuming every watch in a series is identical.

What the battery estimates do—and do not—tell you

Garmin’s published battery numbers are “up to” estimates, not controlled comparative test results. The Forerunner 965’s 31-hour figure is for GPS-only mode, while the fēnix 8 47 mm solar page gives a separate estimate for Max Battery GPS mode. Because the named modes and configurations differ, those numbers do not by themselves establish which watch lasts longer in an equivalent hike. Garmin’s Forerunner 965 manual says actual battery life depends on enabled features, including GPS, activity tracking and connected sensors. Garmin owner manual
