Settlement is a village strategy game built around six residents whose work can be inspected: see who owns a job, what is blocked, what a resident remembers, and whether an action stays within its spending limit. Its default campaign uses deterministic game AI, not an unseen language model. Optional Claude proposals are confined to explicitly configured local-worker research experiments.
What the six residents do
Kaushikreddy Lingi’s DEV Community article, posted October 1, 2026, describes a simulation in which a player selects an objective—such as preparing for a raid or restocking supplies—and a planner breaks it into jobs.

Residents bid for each job based on role suitability, distance, and bounded experience. Each job has one owner. Residents travel to workplaces and gather resources; they can also coordinate recruitment. When a resident rests, that resident may release work for someone else to take over. Agents reconsider tasks when resources or workplaces change.

What the inspector lets you examine
The interface surfaces the operational details behind the village’s activity rather than asking you to infer them from the outcome alone:

- A dragon threatens to burn all the villages in the Kingdom! Can you bribe him with treasures from the battlefield, while cursing your opponents treasures to make sure your village is spared?
- Fantasy-Filled Fun: This enchanting game for 2 to 5 players features fantastic treasures and the dragon from the world of Castle Panic.
- Play treasure cards to make or increase the value of a bribe. Or buy cards at the Black Market to curse a treasure.
- Bribe the Best or Burn: When the deck of treasures runs out, you'll score points for your bribes and lose points for unplayable cards still in your hand. Only the player with the highest score has their village spared from the dragon!
- With easy-to-learn rules, Please Don't Burn My Village! can be played in about 20 minutes. This makes it accessible to players ages 10+ with different experience levels, while still providing strategic depth.
- Task ownership: which resident currently owns each job.
- Blocked work: tasks that cannot proceed, making constraints visible.
- Spending limits: the allowance associated with an objective.
- Memory: residents’ recent memories.
- Action log: recent actions and changes.
The article also reports a research view with matched seeds, JSON and CSV exports, and replay verification. These features make it possible to inspect and compare runs; their presence does not by itself establish that the system performs well or that a scenario tests AI safety generally.
Default campaign versus the optional research path
| Area | Default campaign | Configured research experiments |
|---|---|---|
| Model involvement | Deterministic game AI; no hidden model calls, according to the article. | Optional Claude proposals in explicitly configured local-worker experiments. |
| Proposal and action boundaries | Game planning and job assignment govern the campaign. | Actions are checked against funds, capacity, and the objective’s spending allowance before they change the treasury or army. |
| Inspection | Jobs, blocked work, spending limits, memories, and recent actions. | The article reports the same inspectable state alongside matched-seed experiments, exports, and replay verification. |
| Evidence about quality | The article supplies no measured quality or performance comparison. | The article supplies no measured quality or performance comparison. |
In particular, Settlement’s default campaign does not understand arbitrary natural-language goals or train a neural network. The optional model-proposal path is a separate research configuration, not a description of ordinary campaign behavior.

How to inspect a job handoff
The article reports this local setup. These published instructions have not been independently verified against the repository’s current state.
- Install Node.js 24 or later, clone the Settlement-Village repository, and open a terminal in the cloned project.
- Run
npm cito install the project’s dependencies. - Run
npm run dev, then openhttp://localhost:5173in a browser. - Choose Village orders → Prepare for a raid, then open View plan → Shared jobs.
- Inspect one resident’s assignment and available memory or action details. Assign that resident to rest, then check whether the job changes owners and whether the replacement’s assignment reason is visible.
- Follow the resulting action in the log and check it against the objective’s spending limit. Treat this as an inspection exercise, not a measured result.
What the scenarios can—and cannot—show
The authored scenarios are a bounded testbed for examining coordination, task changes, and constraints. They should not be treated as a general AI safety benchmark. The article reports no study statistics or measured comparison of model quality or performance, so the project’s visible state and replay features are best understood as tools for inspection—not proof of broader reliability.
