The HOKA Clifton 10 is best suited to easy, everyday, and recovery runs when protective cushioning matters more than a lively, fast ride. Independent reviews describe a stable platform and smooth transitions, but also limited energy return and reduced ground feel. It is a considered option for relaxed mileage, not a universal fit or an obvious choice for speed-focused workouts.
What kind of running shoe is the Clifton 10?
HOKA positions the Clifton 10 as a neutral road-running shoe, and independent reviews support that everyday-training role. Its substantial cushioning and broad platform are intended to make relaxed miles feel protective and steady. HOKA also presents it as suitable for walking.

That combination makes the Clifton 10 most compelling for easy and recovery runs. The high, thick cushioning can soften the sensation of the road, while the platform and curved heel help guide the foot through a smooth transition. Those qualities favor comfort and consistency over a nimble, ground-connected feel.
How does it feel at different paces?
Easy and recovery runs
For relaxed running, reviewers point to protective cushioning, a wide base, and guided transitions as strengths. That is the shoe’s clearest use case: steady daily mileage where a forgiving ride is more important than a springy push-off.

Faster workouts
The trade-off shows up when the pace rises. RTINGS identifies the heavier build and poor energy return as drawbacks, and RunRepeat also reports limited energy return compared with its comparison average. If you want a particularly lively response for speed sessions, the Clifton 10 is less convincing. Its thick cushioning also reduces ground feel, according to RunRepeat’s lab review.
What changed from the Clifton 9?
HOKA’s product announcement gives the Clifton 10 a 42 mm heel stack and an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, compared with 32 mm and 5 mm, respectively, for the Clifton 9. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent lab measurements. The update therefore brings a higher heel stack and a changed stated drop.

- Light and plush for everyday miles
- A trusted trainer for daily maintenance miles, the Clifton has been the keystone of our cushioned styles for 10 years and counting. Ushering in a new era of plush performance, this next-generation update delivers a revitalized underfoot experience with an additional 3mm in heel-to-toe drop. Delivering the same ultralight cushioning that made the Clifton a fan favorite, we’ve fine-tuned the fit and added a breathable jacquard upper with double-lace lock to mitigate tongue migration.

- Smooth MetaRocker
HOKA describes a double jacquard knit upper and a slightly roomier forefoot. RTINGS also finds a more generous fit through the forefoot and heel than the Clifton 9, while noting that the Clifton 10 runs noticeably longer than its predecessor. The increased room may suit some runners, but the length difference makes trying the shoe on especially useful if you are replacing an older Clifton in the same size.

HOKA offers standard, wide, and extra-wide options. Independent testing finds more room in the forefoot and heel than the Clifton 9, so runners who wanted a less constricted fit may appreciate the change. However, a roomier shape is not automatically a better fit for every foot, and the reported longer fit makes length worth checking as well as width.

- Consider standard width if your usual running shoes fit comfortably without pressure or excess movement.
- Look at wide or extra-wide sizing if you need additional width; availability may depend on the retailer and size.
- When switching from the Clifton 9, check both toe clearance and heel hold rather than assuming the old size will feel identical.
How much does the Clifton 10 weigh, and what is its drop?
Published figures differ by source, sizing convention, and measurement method. Keep those distinctions in mind rather than treating one number as universal.
| Specification | Reported figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 9.8 oz men’s; 8.0 oz women’s | HOKA’s listed weights; the announcement does not specify a shoe size for these figures. |
| Weight | 9.8 oz / 278 g | iRunFar reviewer Nathan Allen’s measurement for a U.S. men’s size 10. |
| Weight | 9.4 oz men’s; 7.6 oz women’s | Runner’s World search-result summary only; its review page was not available for verification, so these figures are a secondary, less-established data point. |
| Heel-to-toe drop | 8 mm | HOKA’s stated specification; iRunFar also reports 8 mm. |
| Heel-to-toe drop | 12.4 mm | RunRepeat’s lab result using World Athletics-specified measurement points. |
The drop difference is methodological, not a reason to silently substitute one figure for another: RunRepeat explains that its specified measurement points differ from HOKA’s apparent approach, which measures farther back near the midfoot. For the same lab review, RunRepeat measured a 44.4 mm heel stack and a 32.0 mm forefoot stack. Those are its independent measurements, separate from HOKA’s stated 42 mm heel stack.

Who should consider the Clifton 10?
- Runners looking for a cushioned neutral shoe for regular easy or recovery miles.
- Walkers who want a highly cushioned shoe and find its fit comfortable.
- Runners who prefer a stable, broad platform and do not need a particularly energetic ride.
It is a less natural match for runners prioritizing strong energy return, a lively feel for faster sessions, or pronounced ground feedback. Fit is individual, so the wider options and additional forefoot room should be assessed on the foot rather than treated as a guarantee of comfort.
Verdict
The Clifton 10’s strengths are clearest at easy paces: it pairs substantial cushioning with a stable platform and smooth transitions. Its less lively response and diminished ground feel are meaningful trade-offs, particularly if you want one shoe to emphasize speed workouts as well as relaxed miles. Choose it for comfort-first daily running if its fit works for you; look elsewhere if responsiveness is the priority.
