The exact options depend on your carrier. Samsung’s setup guidance describes this as the usual route, not a guarantee that every carrier or phone presents identical menus.
Set up your carrier voicemail

Open the Samsung Phone app.

Open the keypad, then touch and hold 1. If your Phone app displays a Voicemail control, you can try that instead.

Follow the spoken prompts. Your carrier’s mailbox setup will guide you through creating a password and recording your name and greeting.

When setup is complete, call your number from another phone, if available, to check that the greeting plays clearly. If your carrier provides a different test procedure, use that.

If holding 1 does not connect, confirm that your phone has mobile service. You can also look for mailbox details under Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail; the menu may not appear or may differ on your model and software. Samsung’s call-settings guidance notes that voicemail options vary by carrier. Ask your carrier to check that voicemail is enabled on your line if setup still fails.
Choose between dial-in and visual voicemail

Set up visual voicemail
The visual voicemail app’s name and icon can vary by carrier. Open the app if it is installed, review its setup information, select Continue if offered, grant requested permissions, and follow the remaining prompts. Samsung describes this app-based setup in its Galaxy voicemail guidance. If the app is missing or setup cannot finish, ask your carrier whether visual voicemail is available for your line and which app to use.

Record a greeting callers can follow
A useful greeting identifies you or your business, explains that you cannot answer, and gives callers one clear next step. Keep it brief, speak at a measured pace, and record somewhere quiet. Share only details callers need; for a personal mailbox, avoid giving sensitive information or a detailed schedule.
Personal greeting example
“Hi, you’ve reached [name]. I can’t get to the phone right now. Please leave your name, number, and a short message, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”

Business greeting example
“Thank you for calling [business]. We can’t take your call right now. Please leave your name, number, and the reason for your call, and our team will return your message.”
Listen to the recording before relying on it. If it is hard to understand, record it again; checking it by calling from another phone can help you hear what callers will hear. To change a traditional carrier greeting later, dial into the mailbox and follow your carrier’s prompts. Samsung’s initial setup instructions cover recording during setup, but do not establish one universal edit menu for every carrier.

What Samsung Direct voicemail does—and does not do
Direct voicemail is a separate feature, not a replacement for setting up your carrier mailbox. Samsung’s current US support guidance says it is available only on Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Availability and features may also vary by model, software version, and carrier. It works only while the phone is on and connected to the mobile network, so do not count on it when the device is off or has no mobile connection.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Holding 1 does nothing: Check that mobile service is active, then look for Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail. If the mailbox number or service is missing, ask your carrier to confirm voicemail provisioning.

Visual voicemail is not listed: App names and availability are carrier-dependent. Ask which app supports your line and whether visual voicemail is included.

Direct voicemail is absent: Check your phone’s Android and One UI versions, model support, and carrier availability against Samsung’s eligibility guidance.

You are using Wi-Fi only: Samsung says Direct voicemail requires the phone to be on and connected to the mobile network. Wi-Fi alone does not meet that stated requirement.

Samsung’s instructions for selected Galaxy A-series models also show where voicemail details may appear in Phone settings. Menus and available options can vary with carrier, model, and software, so use your carrier for service-specific setup questions.
