A useful Connections-style puzzle maker has two jobs: give players a clear daily word challenge and make it straightforward to create a board others can solve. The standard format is 16 words divided into four groups of four, with one intended solution. The exact features and technical design of the project in the headline are not independently established here, so the workflow below describes the format and design principles—not verified details of that particular site.
What makes a Connections-style board?
Each board presents 16 words. Players sort them into four groups of four, with each group connected by a category or shared idea. The challenge is to find the intended relationship, not merely a relationship that could be argued after the fact.

That distinction matters when building a board: words can have several meanings, and a set of four may appear to fit more than one category. A satisfying puzzle has a clear intended answer even when the route to it is difficult.
How to make a board other people can solve
1. Choose four categories
Start with four distinct ideas that can each support exactly four entries. Categories may be concrete or based on wordplay, but each should be describable precisely enough that a solver can recognize why its four words belong together.

2. Write four entries for each category
Fill each category with four words or phrases. Check that every entry has a strong, natural fit with its intended group. If a connection requires an obscure interpretation that solvers are unlikely to see, revise the entry or category.
3. Test for overlap and false groups
Look at the full set of 16 words rather than reviewing each category in isolation. Ask whether a word plausibly belongs in another group, whether a different set of four forms a convincing category, and whether two categories are too similar. Some overlap can make the puzzle more challenging; too much can make the intended solution feel arbitrary.

Research on Connections-style puzzle generation identifies overlap words and apparent alternate groups as useful sources of challenge, while emphasizing that a board needs one intended solution and meaningful category fit. Treat ambiguity as something to manage, not as a substitute for a coherent answer.

4. Create and share the puzzle
Comparable puzzle makers let creators enter category names and four words per category, then generate a link for others to play. The exact controls and sharing behavior vary by tool, so check the maker you are using rather than assuming every site stores drafts or puzzle data in the same way.

Why difficult boards need revision
Wyna Liu, editor of The New York Times’ Connections, described category creation as a process of spinning off ideas, massaging them together, and working through trial and error in a November 2024 interview with The Atlantic. That is useful guidance for anyone building a board: a first draft is a starting point, not proof that the puzzle is fair.
Try alternate meanings and possible groupings yourself, then ask another person to solve the board if you can. Notice where they hesitate, what competing categories they see, and whether the intended answer becomes clear once they find it. Revise entries or categories when a plausible alternate solution competes with the one you intended.

What to check before sharing
- There are 16 entries, arranged into four intended groups of four.
- Each entry fits its intended category naturally.
- The categories are distinct enough to explain why each group belongs together.
- Potential alternate groupings have been considered, especially those created by words with multiple meanings.
- The sharing link opens the intended board for another player.
These are design checks, not a guarantee that every solver will find the puzzle easy. The goal is a board that can be challenging without making its intended answer feel like a guess.
