To switch function keys, use the setting or key combination made for your keyboard: macOS and ChromeOS have system settings, while many Windows keyboards use a hardware toggle or a manufacturer-specific shortcut. There is no single Fn shortcut or Windows setting that works on every device.
First, identify the keyboard and the change you want
Check whether you are using a laptop’s built-in keyboard or a separate one, and whether the computer runs macOS, ChromeOS, or Windows. The Fn behavior can be controlled by the keyboard itself or by an operating-system setting. Look at the top-row legends: keys may show both F1–F12 and alternate actions such as volume or brightness.

If you only need an F-key action once, a temporary key combination may be enough. To make F1–F12 the default, change the available keyboard setting or toggle the keyboard’s mode.
Try the keyboard’s Fn or F Lock controls
Use Fn for a one-time function-key press
On keyboards that use Fn to access the alternate top-row action, hold Fn while pressing the desired key. For example, if the top row normally adjusts volume, holding Fn may send the key’s standard F-key command instead. The behavior depends on the keyboard; Microsoft documents this approach for its own accessories, but other keyboards may work differently. Microsoft’s function-key guidance explains its keyboard controls.

Use F Lock if your keyboard has it
Some keyboards have an F Lock key that switches between standard F1–F12 commands and alternate top-row commands. Pressing F Lock changes the mode rather than requiring Fn for each press. This applies only to keyboards with that control; check the key legends and the keyboard’s manual.
Set standard function keys on a Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- Click Keyboard Shortcuts, then Function Keys.
- Select “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.”
With that option selected, the top row normally sends standard F-key commands. To use the Mac feature shown on a key, hold Fn or Globe while pressing it. Apple notes that this setting may not be available for a non-Apple keyboard. In that case, check the keyboard maker’s instructions. Use function keys on a Chromebook
To make the top row act as function keys by default, open Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs and enable the function-key option. To send one function-key press without changing that default, hold Search or Launcher while pressing the corresponding top-row key. Google also documents options for customizing F11 and F12. The precise controls can depend on the Chromebook and ChromeOS version; consult Google’s Chromebook keyboard settings.

Lenovo documents Fn+Esc as a function-key mode toggle for the device family covered by its support guide. If you have one of those devices, press Fn and Esc together and check whether the top-row behavior changes. Do not assume the same shortcut applies to another manufacturer—or to every Lenovo model. Verify the exact model in Lenovo’s function-key guidance.

If the keys still behave the wrong way
- Check which keyboard is active. A laptop’s built-in keyboard and a connected external keyboard may have separate controls or settings.
- Look for a mode indicator. Check the top row for Fn Lock or F Lock labels, and see whether the keyboard indicates when a mode is active.
- Confirm the operating-system setting. On a Mac or Chromebook, make sure the function-key option is set the way you intend.
- Look up the exact model. Search the computer or keyboard manufacturer’s support page for the full model name; manufacturer-specific shortcuts are not universal.
If your keyboard lacks a toggle and you want a physical control, a keyboard with an F Lock key is one possible option. Verify that feature on the exact model before buying; the presence and behavior of function-key controls vary.
