To set a song as your Samsung Galaxy ringtone, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, tap Add or the plus sign, choose a song file stored on your phone, then tap Done. If prompted, allow access to audio files. A track saved only inside a streaming app cannot be selected this way.
How do I change my ringtone on Samsung to a song?

- Tap Add or the + icon. Grant file access if requested.
- Choose a song file stored on the phone. If Play selected highlights only appears, turn it on to have the phone play selected highlights; leave it off to play the song from the beginning.
- Tap Done to apply the ringtone.
Samsung notes that it may request permission the first time you change a ringtone, or if you have not used the feature in a while. The precise screens can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s US ringtone instructions show the main flow.

What kind of song file can I use?
The song must be an audio file stored on the device and visible to the ringtone picker. Samsung says that Spotify and other streaming-service tracks cannot be set directly as ringtones; an offline download inside a streaming app is not the same as a regular file available to the phone’s picker. Samsung US explains the local-file requirement.
Samsung’s regional support pages list different formats, so there is no single format list to assume applies to every Galaxy phone. The UK guide, updated 5 June 2026, lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC, and says M4A needs conversion to a listed format. Samsung India’s regional guide, last updated 11 October 2023, lists MP3, WAV, AAC, and MP4. If your file does not appear, check the current Samsung support guidance for your country and try a format listed there.

Why can’t I find the song in the ringtone picker?
- It is only in a streaming app: The ringtone picker needs a device-stored song file, not a track available only through a streaming service.
- The file format may not be recognized: Check your local Samsung support page for formats supported in your region; regional guides do not give identical lists.
- You are configuring the wrong SIM: On some dual-SIM phones, the ringtone flow asks which SIM to set. Check that you selected the SIM receiving the calls in question.
- The menus differ: Samsung says screens and settings may vary by region. For a matching route, consult support for your country and Galaxy model rather than assuming every device uses identical labels. Samsung Canada notes that screens and settings can vary.
What if the ringtone is set but I cannot hear it?
Check that ringtone volume is audible and that the phone is not in a sound mode, Do Not Disturb setting, or other mode that silences calls. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also includes checking Mute all sounds and Airplane mode; verify these settings rather than assuming they are the cause. How do I set a song for one contact only?
Samsung’s US instructions provide a separate contact-specific route: open Contacts, select the person, tap More > Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone, choose a tone, then go back and save. Is this different from a message alert or an app call sound?
Yes. The phone’s Ringtone setting controls ordinary incoming cellular calls. Message alerts are configured separately under Notification sound, and apps that make calls or video calls may have their own sound settings. Samsung distinguishes notification sounds from ringtones; its troubleshooting guide also points to app-specific calling settings.
