Usually, no: there is no universal setting that turns system RAM into dedicated video memory or lets every game and application use it as a substitute. Windows can share some system memory with a GPU, and certain programming workloads can use managed memory, but support depends on the hardware, operating system, driver, and application. If the error is caused by a discrete GPU running out of its own VRAM, adding system RAM alone will not increase that VRAM.
What “system RAM as video memory” actually means
Dedicated VRAM is physical memory attached to a discrete graphics card. System RAM is physical memory attached to the CPU. They are separate memory pools, even on supported systems that provide a unified virtual address space for certain workloads. An application must support the relevant memory behavior; a shared address space does not make the two types of memory interchangeable.

Windows also reports graphics-memory figures that include system memory shared with the GPU. That accounting does not mean all of the reported memory is dedicated VRAM, or that every application can freely allocate it. Can shared or managed memory get around a low-VRAM error?
Only if the application and platform support the relevant approach. A game or app that reports insufficient GPU memory may not be able to move its required data into shared system RAM just because Windows can share memory with the GPU.

CUDA is a specific programming environment, not a general Windows setting for games. NVIDIA notes that “On Windows, including Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and on some Tegra systems, a limited subset of unified memory functionality is available.” In that limited-support mode, managed allocations are explicitly allocated, and GPU-memory oversubscription is not allowed. Those CUDA limits should not be generalized to all Windows graphics applications or GPU vendors. NVIDIA’s CUDA Programming Guide describes unified-memory support and its platform limits.
Why system RAM is not a performance-equivalent VRAM upgrade
Memory attached directly to the processor using it generally offers the best performance. When a GPU accesses mapped host memory, the data travels over the CPU–GPU interconnect; NVIDIA notes that this involves higher latency and lower bandwidth than device memory. The exact performance impact varies by hardware and workload, so there is no reliable universal speed ratio.

As a result, even when an application can use shared or managed memory, it may perform worse than when its working data fits in local GPU memory. That can mean slower rendering or computation, and it does not guarantee that an application’s low-VRAM check will be satisfied.

What to try when an application reports low VRAM
- Check which GPU the application is using. On a system with both integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the app is assigned to the GPU you intend to use. The available controls depend on the operating system, GPU, and driver.
- Reduce the application’s GPU-memory demand. If its settings allow it, lower texture quality, resolution, or other memory-intensive options, then restart the application and check whether the error clears.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications. They may be using graphics memory needed by the affected app.
- Check the app’s and GPU vendor’s supported guidance. A driver or app update may matter, but there is no general memory toggle that can be promised to fix the error.
- Identify the actual bottleneck before upgrading memory. If system RAM is itself short, adding compatible RAM may help that separate limitation. If an integrated GPU uses system memory, available system memory can be relevant. Neither case increases the dedicated VRAM on a discrete GPU.
When does adding system RAM help?
- Possibly: the computer is running low on system RAM, or integrated graphics uses system memory and the machine’s memory capacity is limiting it.
- Not as a direct VRAM upgrade: the computer has a discrete GPU whose dedicated VRAM is insufficient for the workload. More system RAM does not increase the GPU’s physically attached VRAM.
Before buying RAM, check the computer’s supported memory type, available slots, and maximum capacity. These depend on the specific system. To diagnose a particular error or identify relevant settings, the key details are the GPU model, operating system, driver, application, and exact error message.
