In an authorized staging assessment, Resecurity says it successfully impersonated 95 of 241 tested user IDs, including elevated accounts. The report does not describe a production compromise.
What the session-cookie flaw did
The application used Microsoft Entra ID for single sign-on, but it also issued its own session cookie. That cookie formed a separate trust boundary: after sign-in, the application treated a validly signed cookie as proof of the user’s identity.

Resecurity identified two defects in that custom session mechanism: a hard-coded signing secret identical to the cookie name, and a cookie payload based on a user database ID that was publicly exposed rather than an unpredictable session identifier. With a user ID and a way to derive the signing key from the predictable secret, an attacker could create a cookie the application accepted as a valid session. Resecurity says this did not require the victim’s password, a fresh MFA challenge, or an Entra access token. Resecurity’s technical account describes the assessment.
The report says the application used Entra SSO and RS256-signed access tokens. Those protections did not prevent the separate application layer from accepting a forged identity cookie. Strong authentication at an identity provider cannot secure an application session mechanism that independently trusts a forgeable credential.

What the assessment demonstrated—and did not
Resecurity reports successful impersonation of 95 distinct employee accounts among 241 tested user IDs in an authorized assessment. Some accounts had elevated privileges, and the report says a forged administrator session was used to make a state-changing request. Testing was confined to staging; production systems were not touched, test records were restored, and identities were anonymized. These numbers describe the assessment, not a count of production accounts compromised. Resecurity and Cyber Security News summarize the disclosure.
The sources reviewed do not name the application vendor or identify a CVE. They also do not establish whether a patch has been deployed. It would be inaccurate to attribute the flaw to Entra ID itself or to claim that real production accounts were breached.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-C, USB-A, & NFC): Designed for PCs, Macs, iPhones, and Android. For mobile use, simply unfold the key, align it with your phone’s NFC antenna, and hold for a few seconds to authenticate.
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC is supported only through mobile authentication, Not MacOS/windows.
How this differs from AiTM cookie theft
Both attacks can leave an attacker using a session that has already passed sign-in, but they obtain that session differently. In an adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) phishing attack, a proxy captures a legitimate authenticated session cookie during or after a user’s sign-in and replays it. In the yard-management report, the application’s own cookie could be forged because of its session-design defects.

| Question | AiTM cookie theft | Custom-cookie forgery in the reported application |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the weakness? | A phishing proxy intercepts a legitimate authenticated session. | The application’s custom session implementation accepts a forgeable cookie. |
| What does the attacker need? | A captured authenticated cookie to replay. | A publicly available user ID and the ability to derive the application’s signing key from its predictable secret. |
| What needs fixing? | Reduce exposure to phishing and session theft with phishing-resistant authentication, device controls, and detection. | Correct the application’s session design, rotate its secret, and revoke affected sessions. |
| What evidence is described? | Microsoft reporting on broader AiTM activity; it is not evidence about this application. | Resecurity’s authorized staging assessment of one yard-management application. |
Microsoft explains that AiTM cookie theft is not an MFA vulnerability: “Note that this is not a vulnerability in MFA; since AiTM phishing steals the session cookie, the attacker gets authenticated to a session on the user’s behalf, regardless of the sign-in method the latter uses.” Microsoft Threat Intelligence uses that distinction for stolen session cookies. The custom-cookie flaw is another reason a user may find MFA did not protect access, but it is not the same attack path.

What to do if your organization uses the affected application
Correct and contain the application flaw
- Replace the custom cookie scheme with random, unpredictable session identifiers that are generated and verified server-side. Do not treat a public user ID as a session secret or identity proof.
- Rotate the compromised signing secret. Use strong, separate secrets for development, staging, and production so that exposure in one environment does not expose the others.
- Invalidate sessions created under the old secret on every host that accepts the cookie. Revoking sessions on only one server may leave other accepting hosts exposed.
- Review authentication and application logs for unusual session creation, account changes, administrative actions, or activity inconsistent with the expected user and device.
Resecurity recommends unpredictable server-side sessions, environment-specific secrets, and revocation across every host that accepts the cookie. Its report does not establish the application’s current patch status, so users should confirm remediation with the application operator.
Strengthen identity and endpoint defenses
Microsoft recommends phishing-resistant sign-in options such as FIDO2 security keys, Windows Hello for Business, and certificate-based authentication, alongside restricting critical access to known, managed devices, Conditional Access, and monitoring for anomalous sign-ins and token replay. A FIDO2 security key can reduce some phishing risks, but it cannot repair a vulnerable custom session cookie. These identity controls complement—not replace—an application-layer fix. Microsoft’s AiTM incident-response guidance covers related identity defenses.

Detection coverage also has limits. Microsoft’s 2026 Tycoon2FA article says Defender XDR can raise “Stolen session cookie was used” and “User compromised through session cookie hijack” alerts for Entra customers using Edge, through Defender for Cloud Apps connectors for Microsoft 365 and Azure. This is a specified product and connector context, not a claim that the feature detects every forged cookie in every application. Microsoft’s Tycoon2FA article describes that alerting context.
Does changing a password revoke a compromised session?
Do not assume a password change alone invalidates this application’s custom cookie. Microsoft’s guidance discusses session revocation and notes that policy violations such as password changes can revoke sessions, but the reported flaw concerns the application’s own session mechanism. Confirm revocation in that application’s session store and on every host that accepts its cookie, as well as reviewing applicable Entra sessions. Microsoft’s session-revocation guidance explains Entra-side session controls; it does not substitute for revoking the application’s sessions.

Microsoft’s AiTM figures are context, not this flaw’s impact
Microsoft has reported broader AiTM activity, but those statistics should not be attributed to the yard-management application vulnerability. Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported that iterations of a separate AiTM campaign had targeted more than 10,000 organizations since September 2021. That 2022 reporting describes the campaign, not this app.
Microsoft Learn attributes an estimate of 39,000 token-theft incidents per day and a 146% year-over-year rise in AiTM phishing to Microsoft’s 2024 Digital Defense Report. These figures are Microsoft’s broader detection and reporting estimates, not measurements of this custom-cookie flaw. Microsoft Learn’s AiTM guidance provides this context.
