Kennedy Jr. Its recipes and demonstrations can be useful; Elizabeth Nolan Brown’s review argues that the unease comes from the way government and administration messaging enters what might otherwise be an ordinary cooking lesson.
What is The Real Food Show?
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes The Real Food Show as a series meant to make healthy, affordable cooking simple and accessible and to bring the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to life. HHS says it is hosted by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (HHS’s official show page.)

The early episodes pair professional chefs and food personalities with approachable dishes. HHS lists Andrew Gruel making crispy salmon cakes with apple, white bean, and greens salad; Geoffrey Zakarian preparing a French omelet with Gruyère, chives, lettuce, and vinaigrette; Daphne Oz making chickpea salad; Andre Rush preparing a healthy crunch wrap and banana dessert; and Lori Taylor cooking a one-skillet chicken dinner with vegetables and pantry staples. Those descriptions come from HHS, which produces the program.

Is RFK Jr.’s cooking show informative?
Brown’s review credits the show with practical appeal: the food looks inviting, the recipes seem achievable, and the instruction includes routine kitchen skills such as zesting a lemon and whisking. She describes the first two installments as a little over 19 minutes each. The appeal is not that the show introduces advanced cooking, but that it demonstrates ordinary dishes and techniques in a format that may feel accessible.

That distinction matters. A cooking demonstration can be useful on its own terms even if viewers disagree with the surrounding nutrition or policy arguments. HHS’s description explains the agency’s aim; it is not independent verification of the show’s nutrition claims.
Why does Brown find the show unsettling?
Brown’s concern is the setting and the messaging: in her view, political and federal-government themes intrude into otherwise ordinary cooking instruction. A federal agency using a personable cooking series to promote dietary guidance may seem benign or even helpful to some viewers. Brown is uneasy about carrying administration messaging into private kitchens under the cover of an appealing food program.

Her criticism is not simply that healthy cooking advice is unwelcome. In an earlier essay about the series, Brown acknowledged the attractive premise and some nutrition messaging while raising broader questions: government health advice can be mistaken, voluntary recommendations could give way to wider intervention, and it is unclear whether a show like this can change eating habits. In that September 7, 2026 essay, Brown reported that the first episode had more than 309,000 views and the second had 159,000 as of publication. Those are dated view counts, not a measure of how many people cooked the recipes, changed their diets, or experienced health effects. Brown noted that views alone cannot answer those questions and that HHS had not indicated how it planned to assess the program’s reach or effects at that time.

The available sources therefore support a narrower conclusion than either praise or alarm about outcomes: the series presents cooking demonstrations and government nutrition messaging, but they do not establish that watching it improves health or changes behavior.

Viewers looking for straightforward recipe demonstrations may appreciate the chefs and accessible dishes. People wary of political messaging in public-health communication may share Brown’s discomfort. The central tension in her review is that both reactions can be reasonable: the cooking can be practical and appealing while the government role and embedded messaging still invite scrutiny.

For someone following along, the listed fifth episode is a one-skillet chicken dinner with vegetables and pantry staples. A skillet suitable for one-pan cooking is relevant to that recipe, but HHS’s episode listing does not endorse any particular brand, size, or material.
