SEO Memory Agents: How CrystalCore Tracks Competitors—and What It Can Prove

CrystalCore is a developer’s project for retaining competitor-page and AI-citation observations over time. Its history can surface changes, but does not prove what caused search visibility to move.

CrystalCore’s central idea is straightforward: keep a durable record of competitor pages and AI citations so a monitoring agent can bring earlier changes back into view. Its creator describes a system that collects SEO observations, analyzes and stores them, summarizes findings, and tracks events over time. That history can help answer what changed and when; it does not, by itself, establish why rankings or citations changed.

What the “forgotten competitor” story describes

Sameer Khan Mohammad’s September 29, 2026 DEV Community post presents CrystalCore as an AI-powered SEO intelligence project, not as a comparison of commercial tools. The author frames the problem as replacing repeated manual checks of competitors, search results, citations, and SEO changes with continuous monitoring that turns observations into insights. The post asks practical questions such as “What changed since the previous crawl?” and whether a competitor appeared in new search results. Read the project account on DEV Community.

The title’s memorable “remembered” idea is best understood as persistent history: a system can surface an earlier observation that a person—or an assistant without retained records—might not recall. The available account does not establish that CrystalCore uncovered a particular competitor through verified production monitoring, so the title should not be read as evidence of a documented discovery.

How CrystalCore says it keeps SEO history

The public repository describes an agent that retains website edits and competitor events, recalls past observations, and reflects across them to connect changes over time. Its documented workflow combines several kinds of observation rather than treating “SEO monitoring” as one measurement. See the CrystalCore repository README.

Competitor-page monitoring

The README describes a Jira page monitor that checks configured URLs, hashes page content to detect changes, summarizes those changes, and stores event data. A content hash can indicate that a page differs from an earlier capture; a summary can make the difference easier to inspect. Neither step alone explains whether the change affected search visibility.

AI citation probing

The repository also documents a citation-probe job using the Perplexity Sonar API. It describes scheduled snapshots and stored citation data, allowing observations to be compared over time. The README includes sample responses and illustrative citation rates, including 40.0% for Linear and 60.0% for Jira across 20 queries in an example. Those are repository examples, not independently measured benchmarks or evidence of current citation performance.

Storage, timelines, and scheduled work

According to the README, SQLite tables retain monitored-page events and citation snapshots; API endpoints support job execution and timeline views, and jobs can be scheduled. These pieces make it possible to review a sequence of observations rather than relying on a single crawl or an operator’s memory. They describe the repository’s implementation, not an independent test of its reliability or results.

What a history can tell you—and what it cannot

A retained timeline is useful for establishing that an observation was recorded at a particular point and for comparing it with later records. That helps distinguish a new event from a long-running condition and gives an analyst a trail to investigate. But three different claims should remain separate:

  • Change detected: a monitored page’s stored content differs, or a citation probe returned a different result.
  • Correlation observed: a recorded change happened around the same time as a change in search or citation visibility.
  • Cause established: evidence supports that the page change produced the visibility change, rather than another factor.

The post and repository support the project description and its documented workflows; neither establishes that remembered competitor activity caused a ranking or citation shift, or that CrystalCore improved SEO outcomes. A timeline can help formulate an explanation, but causal attribution requires sound measurements and analysis beyond simply noticing events in sequence.

Why honest missing data matters

The README says Google rank is nullable and should stay null unless a genuine Google ranking integration supplies it. This is an important design choice: an absent measurement should remain absent, not be silently represented as a rank. Citation probes, page hashes, search rankings, and summaries are different kinds of evidence; recording which one exists—and which does not—helps prevent an illustrative or incomplete record from looking like a verified result.

How to read a project like this

For readers assessing CrystalCore or building a similar monitoring workflow, the useful question is not simply whether an agent “remembers.” It is what the system observed, how it recorded the observation, and what evidence supports any explanation drawn from it.

  • Check whether the system records timestamps and retains the underlying observation, not only a generated summary.
  • Separate page-change detection from citation probing and from actual search-rank measurements.
  • Look for clear treatment of missing data, such as leaving rank unknown when no ranking integration has supplied it.
  • Treat demo output and sample rates as illustrations unless the measurement method, query set, time period, and reproducible results are documented.
  • Require additional evidence before concluding that a competitor’s change caused a visibility movement.

CrystalCore’s strongest demonstrated idea in its own documentation is the value of durable SEO history: preserved observations can make changes easier to find and investigate. Whether those observations lead to accurate causal explanations or better SEO performance remains unestablished by the post and README.
