Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo let an AI agent inspect and change inventory safely, define narrow operations in the tool schema, then have your PHP application validate, authorize, and execute each request. The model requests an operation; it does not run SQL or enforce your stock policy. Use PDO prepared statements for values and database transactions for related changes.
What “stateful” means for an inventory agent
A stateful inventory tool works with application data that persists: the agent can read the current stock quantity and request a change that PHP writes to the database. The application owns the database connection, validation rules, permissions, and mutation policy. The model supplies a requested operation and its arguments; PHP decides whether and how to carry it out.

That division matters because defining a tool does not implement it. OpenAI’s function-tool API reference describes tools through a developer-defined name, description, and parameter schema. The application implements the behavior and returns the tool’s output.
Define separate tools for reading and changing stock
Give the agent the smallest set of operations it needs. A read operation and a mutation operation should be distinct so the application can apply different validation and authorization rules.

get_inventory_item
Describe this as retrieving one item’s inventory details by a stable identifier. Its schema might accept an integer item_id and no other fields. Return only information needed for the task, such as the item identifier, name, and current quantity.
adjust_inventory
Describe this as requesting a controlled quantity adjustment for one item. Its schema might accept an integer item_id, an integer change (positive or negative), and a short reason. These are example operation names and fields, not requirements imposed by the API. Choose a schema that fits your own inventory model and policy.
Keep tool descriptions explicit about effects. A read tool should not change data; a mutation tool should state that it changes stock and should not imply that a request is guaranteed to succeed. Limit each operation to a single purpose instead of exposing a general-purpose SQL tool.
Dispatch requests through application code
When the model requests a tool call, PHP should match the requested name against a fixed set of supported operations. Parse and validate the arguments, apply the current user’s authorization and the application’s inventory rules, then call the corresponding application function. Reject unknown tool names and malformed or unexpected arguments without querying or changing the database.

PDO provides a consistent PHP interface for accessing databases, but it is not a database server or a universal SQL abstraction: the application needs the appropriate PDO driver for its database. See the PHP Documentation Group’s PDO documentation.
Keep policy checks in PHP rather than assuming the tool schema will enforce them. For example, your application must decide who may adjust stock, whether negative quantities are allowed, what adjustment bounds apply, and whether a person must approve a change. Neither the function definition nor PDO settles those questions.
Bind values with PDO prepared statements
Use prepared statements for model-provided values such as item IDs, quantities, and reasons. Do not concatenate those values into SQL text. The PHP Documentation Group explains: “The parameters to prepared statements don’t need to be quoted; the driver automatically handles this.” That statement applies to bound parameter values, not to table names, column names, or arbitrary SQL fragments.
For example, keep the query structure fixed in application code and bind the item identifier:

- 【Plug and play for Easy Portability】- Insert the USB wireless receiver into the computer, turn on the inventory scanner and connect to the computer immediately, plug and play, no need to install drivers or software, Compatible with most POS systems except those requiring proprietary hardware integrations or direct app-level integration.
$statement = $pdo->prepare(
'SELECT item_id, name, quantity FROM inventory WHERE item_id = :item_id'
);
$statement->execute(['item_id' => $itemId]);
$item = $statement->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
For an update, bind the change and identifier in the same way:
$statement = $pdo->prepare(
'UPDATE inventory SET quantity = quantity + :change WHERE item_id = :item_id'
);
$statement->execute([
'change' => $change,
'item_id' => $itemId,
]);
These snippets show parameter binding, not a complete production implementation. Validate types and permitted values before execution, check whether the item exists, and handle database errors according to your application’s requirements. A parameter marker represents a complete data literal; it cannot stand in for an identifier or an arbitrary piece of SQL. If a query must vary by column or table, keep choices fixed in code or select from a strict allowlist rather than accepting a model-provided fragment. See PHP prepared statements and stored procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make related changes atomic with a transaction
If an operation requires multiple database steps—for example, checking an item and recording an adjustment—group them in a transaction where the selected database supports the behavior you need. Begin the transaction, perform the checks and writes, and commit only when the complete operation succeeds. If a step fails, roll back rather than reporting a completed change.

// Read and validate the current item, then perform related writes.
$pdo->commit();
} catch (Throwable $error) {
if ($pdo->inTransaction()) {
$pdo->rollBack();
}
throw $error;
}
Fill in the checks and writes for your schema; the example is a transaction outline, not a standalone inventory handler. PDO exposes transaction methods, but transaction support and behavior depend on the underlying database. Some databases may implicitly commit when executing DDL, so do not assume every statement participates in a transaction as expected. Confirm the behavior of your chosen database and storage engine. The PHP Documentation Group covers these caveats in Transactions and auto-commit.

Return results only after the database outcome is known
Give the model a concise, factual result. For a successful adjustment, that could include the item identifier, previous quantity, new quantity, and success status. For a rejected request, return a clear outcome such as “not authorized,” “item not found,” or “change exceeds the allowed bound,” without implying that stock changed.
Do not report success until the database operation has committed. Keep detailed exception information in application logs rather than exposing sensitive internals in a tool result. Decide how the application should handle retries and conflicting updates before enabling mutations in a live workflow; those policies depend on your database, inventory rules, and deployment.
Decisions to make before enabling mutations
- Authorization: Which authenticated users or workflows may read inventory, and which may change it?
- Quantity rules: Can stock go below zero? What adjustment sizes are valid, and how should units or fractional amounts be represented?
- Approval: Which changes can execute immediately, and which require a human to confirm?
- Concurrency: What should happen if stock changes between a read and an adjustment request?
- Database behavior: Which PDO driver and database are deployed, and do the chosen tables and operations support the transaction behavior the application relies on?
- Auditability: Should each change record its reason, actor, time, and resulting quantity?
The function-tool reference and PHP documentation establish the tool-definition, parameter-binding, and transaction mechanics; they do not prescribe answers to these inventory-specific policy questions. Set those rules explicitly in the PHP application before allowing an agent to make persistent changes.
