Sensex and Nifty 50 are headline Indian stock-market indexes, not the exchanges themselves and not investments you buy directly. Sensex is the BSE benchmark built from 30 companies under the cited BSE methodology. Nifty 50 is NSE’s 50-stock benchmark, owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited. Both use versions of free-float market-capitalisation weighting, but they draw from different exchange universes and use separate selection rules.
That difference explains why the two indexes can rise or fall by different amounts on the same day. The useful comparison is not “which one is better?” but what each basket contains, how companies enter or leave it, how weights are assigned and which benchmark fits the question you are trying to answer.

Sensex vs Nifty 50 at a glance
| Axis | BSE SENSEX | NSE Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Provider and exchange setting | BSE index; its cited methodology starts with eligible BSE 100 constituents. | Owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited. |
| Number of constituents | 30 companies under the cited BSE methodology. | 50 stocks. |
| Weighting approach | Float-adjusted market capitalisation. | Free-float market capitalisation, effective in the published methodology from June 26, 2009. |
| Selection framework | Eligibility, trading history, derivative linkage, liquidity and ranking tests, followed by top-rank and incumbent-retention rules. | Maintained under NSE Indices’ separate Nifty methodology. |
| Published uses | BSE describes it as a benchmark index. | Benchmarking fund portfolios, index-based derivatives and index funds. |
| Comparable market-coverage statistic | Not stated: a same-date, same-denominator figure was not established in the cited BSE material. | 53.73% of NSE-listed free-float market capitalisation as of March 30, 2026. |
The count of constituents is the most visible difference, but it is not a quality score. A 50-stock basket is larger than a 30-stock basket; neither represents every listed Indian company, and a larger count does not automatically make an index more representative for every purpose.
What the Sensex tracks
Sensex is the BSE’s flagship equity benchmark. In the BSE methodology cited for this comparison, the index is derived from the BSE 100 universe rather than from every security listed on BSE. The resulting basket contains 30 companies.

Eligibility starts with BSE 100 constituents
A company must first belong to the eligible BSE 100 universe. The methodology then applies operational and trading conditions before a stock can be considered. It requires at least six months of BSE listing history, trading on every BSE trading day during the six-month reference period and an outstanding derivative contract. These conditions are designed to keep the selection process focused on securities with an established trading record and a derivatives market.
How candidates are ranked
Eligible companies are ranked using both average six-month float-adjusted market capitalisation and total market capitalisation. The process also applies annualised traded-value criteria. Very small prospective weights can be excluded, after which top-rank rules and provisions for retaining existing constituents are used to arrive at 30 names. Additions and deletions remain at the discretion of the index committee, so the mechanical screens do not mean that membership changes are entirely automatic.
How Sensex weights companies
Sensex uses float-adjusted market capitalisation. A company with a larger market value of shares available to public investors receives a larger index weight than a smaller company, all else equal. The adjustment matters because not every issued share is freely tradable: promoter, government, strategic or other restricted holdings may not be treated as part of the public float. The exact float-factor treatment should be checked against the latest BSE methodology because index rules can be revised.

Nifty 50 is NSE’s diversified 50-stock index. NSE’s official overview describes it as covering 13 sectors of the economy. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited and is intended to provide a rules-based large-company benchmark within the NSE environment.
A 50-stock NSE benchmark, not the whole NSE
The name “Nifty” can refer to NSE’s wider family of indexes. “Nifty 50” means the specific 50-stock benchmark. Its constituents are selected under NSE Indices’ own methodology, so the current list should be taken from the latest NSE constituents file or methodology publication rather than reconstructed from memory. Members, weights and sector representation can change after scheduled reviews or corporate events.
Published applications
NSE identifies three prominent uses for Nifty 50: benchmarking fund portfolios, creating index-based derivatives and supporting index funds. Those uses make the index a reference point for performance measurement and financial contracts. They do not turn the index into a personal investment recommendation, and they do not mean that every fund or derivative will match the index perfectly after fees, taxes, trading costs and tracking differences.

Free-float weighting: the shared idea behind both indexes
Both benchmarks give more influence to companies with greater publicly available market value instead of assigning every constituent an equal slice. In simplified form, a company’s index value is related to its share price, its shares outstanding and the proportion regarded as available to public investors. A high share price by itself does not determine the weight; the company’s float-adjusted market value does.

Large shareholders may hold shares that are not normally available for day-to-day public trading. Excluding those holdings makes the index closer to the portion of a company that public-market investors can actually buy and sell. It also prevents a company from receiving a full weight merely because its total issued share count is large when much of that stock is closely held.
What this weighting does not mean
- It does not make the indexes equal-weighted. The largest eligible companies can still dominate daily moves.
- It does not guarantee identical weights in Sensex and Nifty 50. Each provider has a different eligible universe, review timetable and float-factor implementation.
- It does not remove concentration risk. Thirty or 50 companies are still a selected subset of the listed market.
Why Sensex and Nifty 50 move by different amounts
It is normal for the indexes to show different daily returns even when they respond to the same economic news. Their prices are built from different baskets and different weights.
Different companies and sector mixes
The two indexes overlap in some large Indian companies, but they are not identical portfolios. A sector-heavy move affects whichever index assigns more weight to that sector or contains more companies exposed to it. For example, a sharp move in a sector represented by several Nifty 50 constituents may have a larger effect on Nifty 50 than on a 30-stock Sensex basket, while a heavily weighted Sensex constituent can have an outsized effect in the other direction.
Different constituent weights
Even when both indexes include the same company, its percentage weight need not match. The denominator is the total float-adjusted market value of each index’s own basket. A company can therefore be a major driver of one index and a smaller driver of the other.
Different exchange settings and market data
Sensex is calculated from BSE-listed trading data and Nifty 50 from NSE-listed trading data. Prices generally move closely because both exchanges reflect the same underlying Indian market, but order flow, liquidity, timing and temporary price differences can vary between venues. Intraday readings should be compared at the same timestamp and on the same basis, not by pairing an early quote from one exchange with a later quote from the other.

Rebalances and corporate actions
Reviews, additions, deletions, mergers, splits, bonus issues and other corporate actions can alter an index’s composition or divisor. Providers adjust index calculations so that a technical event does not look like a market gain or loss. A rebalance can nevertheless change future sensitivity because the basket and its weights have changed. The date and rules for each adjustment come from the relevant provider, not from the other exchange.
Is Nifty 50 broader than Sensex?
By constituent count, yes: Nifty 50 contains 50 stocks while the cited Sensex methodology specifies 30 companies. More constituents can spread a single-company shock across a larger basket. It does not establish that Nifty 50 covers the whole Indian market or that it is automatically a superior benchmark.
“Broader” can mean different things. It may refer to the number of stocks, the number of sectors, the share of a market’s free-float capitalisation, or how well an index matches a particular portfolio. Nifty 50’s official overview says it accounts for 13 sectors, but that statement is not a promise that every sector has equal representation. Sensex’s 30-company structure may be more convenient for a compact large-cap indicator, while Nifty 50’s 50-stock structure may reduce the influence of one constituent. The appropriate comparison depends on the measurement goal.

What the published coverage figures actually say
NSE reported that Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks as of March 30, 2026. It also reported 29.24% of the traded value of all stocks on NSE for the six months ending March 2026.
Those are useful descriptions of Nifty 50 within the NSE universe, but they are not head-to-head Sensex-versus-Nifty statistics. The denominator is NSE-listed stocks, and the two figures use different measures: free-float capitalisation for the first and traded value over a six-month period for the second. The cited BSE methodology did not provide a same-date Sensex coverage percentage that could be compared fairly. It would therefore be misleading to call 53.73% the share of all Indian equities or to set it against an unverified Sensex number.
How to compare the indexes step by step
- Define the question. Decide whether you are comparing market headlines, a fund’s performance, a derivative contract or the breadth of a benchmark. Each purpose can require a different reference index.
- Identify the exact index name. Confirm that the figure is for BSE SENSEX or Nifty 50, rather than another BSE index or a different member of the Nifty family.
- Match the return type. A price index excludes reinvested dividends, while a total-return version includes them. Use the same return convention for both sides of a performance comparison.
- Match the date and time. Compare closing values from the same session, or intraday values captured at the same timestamp. Record whether a value is provisional or adjusted for a corporate action.
- Check the denominator and period. Market-capitalisation percentages, traded-value percentages and six-month statistics are not interchangeable. A percentage must state which exchange universe and period it measures.
- Review contributors. When daily returns diverge, inspect the largest positive and negative constituent contributions and any sector concentration before drawing a conclusion.
How to use the two indexes as benchmarks
For a portfolio performance check
Use the benchmark that matches the market and mandate you are measuring. A portfolio built to hold NSE large-cap stocks may use Nifty 50 as a reference; a portfolio explicitly tied to BSE’s large-company universe may use Sensex. Compare total-return versions when assessing an investment that receives dividends, because a price index and a dividend-inclusive return series answer different questions.

Also compare risk and composition, not only headline return. A portfolio with mid-cap, small-cap or sector-specific holdings may not be expected to track either large-cap benchmark closely. Differences in cash holdings, rebalancing dates, fund expenses and taxation can create a gap even when the stated benchmark is appropriate.

For understanding a daily headline
- Confirm whether the report refers to Sensex or Nifty 50; “Nifty” alone may mean another NSE index.
- Check the percentage change and the index level’s point change separately. A 500-point move has a different meaning at different index levels.
- Look at the largest contributors and detractors, if the exchange provides them.
- Check the timestamp and whether the move occurred during regular trading, near a close or after a corporate-action adjustment.
For derivatives or index funds
Read the product documentation for the exact underlying index, contract specifications, expiry, settlement method, fees and tracking approach. An index fund or exchange-traded product seeks to follow its stated benchmark; it is a separate financial product with its own costs and operating risks. A derivative references an index under contract terms and is not the same thing as owning the constituent shares.
What can make an index product cost more than the index
The published index level has no brokerage bill or expense ratio because it is a calculation. An investor accessing it through a fund, exchange-traded product or derivative may face an expense ratio, bid-ask spread, brokerage, taxes, financing or other contract charges. Portfolio turnover, cash balances and imperfect replication can produce tracking difference. These costs explain why a product’s return should not be assumed to equal the index’s quoted price return.

- “Sensex is the BSE.” BSE is the exchange; Sensex is one BSE index.
- “Nifty is the NSE.” NSE is the exchange; Nifty 50 is one benchmark in the Nifty index family.
- “The index contains every listed company.” Each index is a selected basket governed by eligibility and maintenance rules.
- “The index with more stocks is automatically safer.” Constituent count alone does not measure volatility, sector concentration or investment suitability.
- “A higher index level means a more expensive market.” Index levels depend on base values, divisors and historical calculation methods. Compare percentage returns and the correct return series instead.
- “A good index return tells me what to buy.” A benchmark describes a market segment; it does not account for your objectives, horizon, taxes or risk tolerance.
- “The 53.73% figure covers all Indian shares.” It refers to NSE-listed free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026, not all Indian equities and not a Sensex comparison.
- “A constituent change proves the index calculation was wrong.” Membership changes follow provider rules and committee decisions; they are part of index maintenance.
How to verify current Sensex and Nifty 50 data
Methodologies, constituents, weights, coverage statistics and related products can change. Before using a figure in a report or making a comparison, check the latest official BSE methodology and the latest NSE Indices overview, constituents file and methodology publication. Confirm the publication date, the exchange universe, the measurement period and whether the number describes price return, total return, market capitalisation or traded value.
The figures cited here were current in the available official material on October 13, 2026. The 53.73% and 29.24% NSE statistics are specifically dated March 2026, not live October 2026 readings. The cited BSE methodology version was surfaced as published the previous year, so a later BSE revision could change eligibility details or membership rules.

The practical difference in one sentence
Sensex is a 30-company BSE benchmark selected from an eligible BSE universe, while Nifty 50 is a 50-stock NSE benchmark maintained by NSE Indices; their different baskets, weights and exchange data make them related but non-identical gauges of Indian large-cap equities.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Sensex and Nifty 50?
Sensex is BSE’s 30-company benchmark under the cited methodology, while Nifty 50 is NSE’s 50-stock benchmark managed by NSE Indices Limited. They use similar free-float market-capitalisation principles but separate exchange universes and selection rules.
Does Sensex track the whole BSE?
No. Sensex is one selected BSE index. The cited methodology begins with eligible BSE 100 constituents and applies listing-history, trading, derivative, liquidity and ranking criteria to reach 30 companies.
Why do Sensex and Nifty move by different amounts?
They contain different stocks, assign different weights and use trading data from different exchange settings. Sector moves, constituent-specific news, liquidity, timing and rebalances can therefore affect their daily returns differently.
Is Nifty 50 broader than Sensex?
By constituent count, yes: Nifty 50 has 50 stocks and Sensex has 30 companies under the cited methodology. That does not mean Nifty 50 covers every Indian company or is automatically a better benchmark.
Are Sensex and Nifty indexes or investments?
They are indexes—rule-based measures of selected shares—not securities you purchase directly. Funds, exchange-traded products and derivatives may track or reference them, with their own fees, risks and contract terms.
What does the 53.73% Nifty coverage figure mean?
NSE reported that Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on March 30, 2026. It is not a percentage of all Indian equities and is not a same-date Sensex comparison.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Sensex is BSE’s 30-company benchmark and Nifty 50 is NSE’s 50-stock benchmark. Both use free-float market-capitalisation weighting, but their constituents, eligibility rules, exchange data and sector exposures differ. Compare the exact index, date, return type and market denominator before interpreting a performance gap.
