Assess valuation risk by testing what a stock price assumes about durable earnings, not by applying one “Chinese hardware” multiple to every issuer. First separate equipment makers, fabless chip designers, manufacturers, component suppliers and finished-system companies. Then examine earnings concentration, cyclicality, customer and geographic exposure, policy access, manufacturing dependencies and the assumptions embedded in the valuation. Finally, compare each company in base and downside cases using normalized earnings and cash generation.
The filings cited in this guide show why that discipline matters: export controls can restrict sales, China-linked revenue can move sharply between fiscal years, third-party manufacturing can create Taiwan-related supply risk, and industry downturns or aggressive pricing can reduce the earnings used in a multiple. Those are issuer-specific risk channels, not proof that every Chinese hardware stock is overvalued.

What valuation risk means in this sector
A valuation is a set of expectations expressed as a price. A price-to-earnings ratio assumes something about future earnings, growth, margins, capital requirements and the durability of those results. Valuation risk is the possibility that one or more of those assumptions fails before the investor receives the expected cash flows.

A company may lose access to a customer because of export licensing, face lower orders during a semiconductor downturn, pay more for a critical component, or be unable to manufacture through a concentrated supply chain. The share price can fall even when the company remains profitable if investors reduce the multiple they are willing to pay for less certain earnings.

Do not confuse a high reported China revenue percentage with an automatic sell signal, or a low multiple with a margin of safety. Concentration measures sensitivity; the financial damage depends on product margins, substitution options, contractual commitments, inventory, production flexibility and the company’s position in the value chain.
The available filings do not establish a universal sector multiple, a current ranking of overvalued stocks or a fair-value threshold. A sound conclusion must therefore be built issuer by issuer and dated to the latest filing and market price.
Segment the market before comparing companies
“Chinese tech hardware” describes businesses with different economics. Compare companies only after confirming that they sell similar products, serve similar customers and carry similar manufacturing responsibilities.

The examples in public filings come from different issuers and are not a statistically representative sample of all Chinese hardware companies. Use them as prompts for questions, then verify the exposure in the target company’s own annual and interim reports.
Step 1: Establish the quality of the earnings base
Read the latest annual and interim filings
Start with the income statement, cash-flow statement, segment note, management discussion and risk factors. Record the fiscal period for every number. A trailing earnings figure can look strong because of a temporary pricing environment, a customer build, a subsidy-supported investment cycle or unusually high utilization.
- Separate recurring product and service revenue from one-time engineering, licensing or settlement income.
- Compare revenue growth with operating cash flow and working-capital movements. A large receivables or inventory build can make accounting earnings look healthier than cash generation.
- Track gross margin and operating margin by segment where disclosed, rather than relying only on consolidated margins.
- Identify whether capital expenditure, research spending or customer qualification costs must rise to sustain the reported growth rate.
- Read the risk-factor language alongside management’s outlook; risk disclosures describe possible outcomes, not forecasts that those outcomes will occur.
Test cyclicality and pricing power
ACM Research’s 2025 annual report identifies semiconductor-industry downturn risk and aggressive pricing pressure in Asia. That disclosure does not show that every equipment or chip company faces the same magnitude of pressure, but it gives a practical stress test: ask how earnings behave when customers delay capacity additions and competitors cut prices.

Use a multi-year series where available. Compare the latest margin with prior peak, trough and mid-cycle levels. If the valuation uses peak earnings, calculate a second case using a normalized margin or revenue level. The cited filings do not prescribe a normalization formula; state your chosen method explicitly and apply it consistently across peers.
Look for concentration before forecasting growth
Concentration can sit in customers, products, end markets or facilities. A company with one dominant customer may have excellent current margins but little negotiating power when that customer reduces orders. A company selling into one end market may appear diversified by product while remaining economically concentrated.
Review the percentage of revenue from major customers, the largest product or segment, and any single market disclosed by management. Then ask what can replace that business, how long qualification would take and whether replacement sales would carry comparable margins. Do not infer diversification merely from a long customer list if one or two accounts represent most of the revenue.
Step 2: Quantify geographic and customer exposure correctly
Geographic revenue is a moving exposure, not a valuation verdict. Track the company’s own definitions and distinguish customer location, manufacturing location and product destination. They are not interchangeable: a global customer producing in China may be counted as China revenue even when the customer’s headquarters and ultimate end market are elsewhere.
Lam Research’s FY2025 Form 10-K provides a useful issuer-specific example. It states that revenue in China, including global and domestic Chinese customers with manufacturing facilities in China, represented approximately 34% of total revenue in fiscal 2025, 42% in fiscal 2024 and 26% in fiscal 2023. The series shows why the fiscal period and definition must accompany the percentage.

| Lam Research fiscal year | China share of total revenue | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 34% | Issuer-reported; includes global and domestic Chinese customers with manufacturing facilities in China |
| 2024 | 42% | Issuer-reported using the same stated definition |
| 2023 | 26% | Issuer-reported using the same stated definition |
For another issuer, construct the same series from its own notes rather than importing Lam Research’s definition. Then test the financial consequences of a demand shock. A high-exposure company may be able to redirect tools, products or production; another may have no practical substitute because of customer qualification, local content rules or technology restrictions.

Step 3: Map policy and market-access risk
Policy can affect both demand and the ability to sell. ACM Research describes export controls and other trade measures as potential constraints on tool demand, costs and sales. Lam Research reports that export-license requirements limited its market in China and affected revenue. These statements establish material channels that investors should model; they do not establish the probability or eventual size of a future policy shock.
Build three explicit cases
| Case | Assumption to write down | Observable indicators | Financial lines to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Current licenses, customer access and supply routes continue under the latest disclosed conditions | License status, order intake, backlog conversion and management guidance | Revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, cash flow and working capital |
| Downside | Licenses are delayed, selected customers cannot buy, or compliance costs and delivery times rise | Regulatory notices, customer announcements, shipment delays and product-specific restrictions | Lower shipments, mix changes, higher compliance costs, inventory and receivables |
| Severe | A material product or customer channel becomes unavailable for a period you specify | Rule changes, denied licenses, contract cancellations and production reallocations | Revenue loss, fixed-cost absorption, impairment risk, liquidity and covenant headroom |
List the products, customers, end uses and jurisdictions affected in each case. Avoid treating a broad “China risk” label as an input. A restriction on one tool family or customer group may have a very different effect from a restriction covering an entire product portfolio.
Assess substitution and pass-through
Ask whether the company can redirect sales to another region, replace a restricted customer, redesign a product or pass higher costs to buyers. The answer depends on qualification cycles, technical specifications, installed-base service obligations and competitors’ capacity. A theoretical alternative is not a near-term substitute if approval takes several quarters or requires a new design.

Step 4: Map manufacturing, supplier and technology dependencies
A company can lose earnings even when demand remains strong if it cannot make or deliver the product. Identify critical foundries, assembly and test partners, equipment, software, substrates, memory, optics and other single-source inputs. Separate contractual commitments from practical availability: a supplier agreement may not guarantee capacity during a disruption.
One SEC-filed semiconductor annual report describes dependence on third-party manufacturing and warns that conflict, trade restrictions or instability affecting Taiwan-based foundry operations could disrupt semiconductor manufacturing and supply chains. Apply that concept to each target issuer only after checking its own supply-chain disclosure; the cited warning is not evidence that every company has identical Taiwan exposure.
Questions that reveal resilience
- Which suppliers or foundries are technically qualified today, and how long would a second source take to qualify?
- Can the company hold safety stock without creating obsolescence or cash-flow strain?
- Which components are proprietary, and which can be redesigned around alternatives?
- Where are wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, final integration and distribution physically located?
- What happens to output, unit cost and delivery commitments if the most concentrated site is unavailable for one quarter or several quarters?
- Does the company have customer-approved substitutes, or would a change require a new qualification cycle?
Model both a volume effect and a margin effect. A disruption can reduce sales while also leaving factories, engineering teams or service infrastructure underutilized, causing fixed costs to absorb a smaller revenue base.

Step 5: Compare valuation using explicit assumptions
Record the valuation measure, the earnings period and every operating assumption. Common measures such as price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-operating-profit and free-cash-flow yield can be useful, but none is meaningful without a comparable earnings base. The reviewed filings do not prescribe a particular model or fair-value multiple.
| Item to compare | What to document | Why it changes risk |
|---|---|---|
| Peer group | Business model, customers, end markets and manufacturing role | A broad peer set can make a structurally different company look cheap or expensive |
| Earnings period | Trailing, forward, peak, trough or normalized earnings; fiscal year-end | A cyclical peak can make a low multiple look safer than it is |
| Growth assumption | Volume, price, market share and geographic expansion required | Growth dependent on restricted customers or one market has higher failure risk |
| Margin assumption | Gross and operating margins after pricing, compliance and supply costs | Small margin changes can materially alter earnings and cash generation |
| Capital needs | Equipment, inventory, qualification spending and working capital | Accounting earnings may not convert into distributable cash |
| Policy access | Products, customers and jurisdictions assumed to remain available | A license or trade-rule change can invalidate the revenue case |
| Downside case | Specific volume, price, margin and duration assumptions | Reveals whether the current price depends on uninterrupted execution |
Use at least a base and a downside case for every peer. If current earnings appear unusually high, include normalized earnings and cash generation rather than relying on one trailing multiple. State the normalization rule—for example, the period or margin used—and do not change it selectively to make one company appear cheaper.
Step 6: Use a risk-adjusted comparison framework
The following axes organize a comparison without pretending that the filings provide validated scoring weights.
| Axis | Evidence to collect | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Value-chain position | Equipment, design, manufacturing, component or finished system role | Determines who bears inventory, capex, qualification and technology risk |
| Revenue exposure | Customer concentration, end-market mix and geographic revenue with definitions and periods | Shows sensitivity to a specific demand or policy shock |
| Policy sensitivity | Products, customers and end uses exposed to licensing, sanctions, tariffs or other controls | Indicates how quickly market access could change |
| Supply-chain resilience | Third-party dependence, site concentration and credible alternatives | Measures the ability to maintain output during disruption |
| Earnings quality | Cyclicality, pricing power, margin stability and cash conversion | Tests whether reported profit is durable through a cycle |
| Valuation assumptions | Peer choice, earnings period, growth, margin, capital needs and downside inputs | Shows what the share price must be right about |
Do not add the axes into an arbitrary score unless you can justify the weights. A checklist that exposes the assumptions is more useful than a precise-looking ranking built from inconsistent disclosures.
Step 7: Keep a falsifiable risk checklist
For each material risk, write four entries: the filing evidence, the financial line it could affect, an observable indicator and the evidence that would reduce the concern.

- Attach it to a financial line. Specify whether the first effect should appear in orders, revenue, gross margin, inventory, receivables, capital expenditure or cash flow.
- Choose an indicator. Examples include backlog conversion, order cancellations, license outcomes, customer concentration, supplier lead times, utilization or margin guidance.
- Define disconfirming evidence. A second qualified supplier, successful customer replacement, stable margins through a downturn or renewed licenses can reduce a concern.
- Set a review trigger. Revisit the checklist when the company files new annual or interim results, changes guidance or when trade rules change.
This method prevents a risk disclosure from becoming a prediction. Annual reports enumerate possible adverse outcomes; they do not say those outcomes will occur.

Common analytical mistakes
Comparing unlike companies
Putting a fabless designer beside an equipment maker because both are labeled “semiconductor” can hide differences in foundry dependence, customer concentration and policy exposure. Rebuild the peer group around economics, not a country or ticker label.
Using the wrong geographic definition
Customer headquarters, manufacturing location and shipment destination can produce different percentages. Copy the issuer’s definition beside every figure and keep fiscal years aligned.
Treating a risk factor as a probability estimate
A filing that says export controls or Taiwan disruption could harm sales establishes materiality, not likelihood. Add your own scenario assumptions transparently instead of presenting the warning as a forecast.
Assuming a low multiple is automatically defensive
If earnings are at a cyclical peak, if pricing is unusually favorable or if policy access is fragile, the denominator may contract. Recalculate on normalized earnings and test cash conversion.
Ignoring second-order effects
A lost order can create excess inventory; a supply interruption can reduce factory utilization; a compliance change can raise engineering and legal costs. Model these linked effects rather than subtracting only the directly restricted revenue.
How to keep the assessment current
Risk profiles change as product mix, customers, factories and regulations change. Date every percentage, margin, multiple and scenario. The Lam Research China-revenue series demonstrates that one issuer’s exposure moved from 26% in fiscal 2023 to 42% in fiscal 2024 and 34% in fiscal 2025; a single historical percentage is not a permanent classification.
Before making a company-specific or current valuation claim, retrieve the latest annual and interim filings and current market data for the exact security and date. Recheck export-license rules, customer disclosures, supplier arrangements and management guidance. The cited filings support a risk-assessment process, not a conclusion that any particular stock is overvalued or undervalued.
