Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: use Selenium when screenshots are one step in a larger WebDriver-controlled workflow; use a hosted screenshot API when you want to submit capture jobs over HTTP and have the provider run the browser. Neither approach is a proven universal winner for bulk throughput, price, or reliability: choose by testing your own pages and comparing the total operating cost.
How the two approaches differ
Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot function captures the current browsing context, and its documentation also covers screenshots of individual elements. The browser is under your automation workflow’s control; WebDriver returns screenshot data encoded in Base64, which your code can save as a file. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation.

A hosted screenshot API exposes capture as an HTTP task. For example, the Browserless Screenshot API documents a POST request to /screenshot, authenticated with a token, that accepts a URL or raw HTML and screenshot options. The response is image data in PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to the requested options. Browserless describes its REST APIs as single requests for browser tasks without requiring customers to manage browser infrastructure; that is a service model, not evidence that it is faster or less expensive than running Selenium yourself. See the Browserless REST API overview.

These are different deployment choices, not simply two screenshot commands: with Selenium, your system orchestrates WebDriver and browser sessions; with an API, you send a capture request to a managed service. The best fit depends on how much interaction and lifecycle control your capture pipeline needs.

Which approach fits your bulk workflow?
Choose Selenium when capture is part of browser automation
Selenium is a natural fit when each page needs a sequence of browser actions before the screenshot—for example, navigating through an existing workflow or interacting with the page as part of a broader WebDriver task. It lets your system control that browser workflow directly. The trade-off is that your team also owns the surrounding browser execution and session orchestration.
Choose a hosted API when capture is an HTTP job
A hosted API can fit a pipeline that needs to submit a URL or HTML and receive an image without building its integration around WebDriver. The provider runs the browser-side task. Check the specific service’s limits, controls, pricing, and failure behavior for the volume and page mix you expect; managed execution alone does not establish better throughput, reliability, or cost.

Keep other browser frameworks in view
Selenium versus a screenshot API is not the only architectural choice. A team can also use a browser automation framework directly; for example, the Playwright Page API documents page screenshots. Consider that route if direct browser automation is appropriate but Selenium is not already a requirement in your stack.
Compare capture requirements, not just interfaces
Before selecting an architecture, write down what counts as a successful capture. A viewport screenshot, a full-page image, and a screenshot of one element are different outputs, and a page that has technically loaded may still be missing content that appears after scrolling or asynchronous rendering.

| Requirement | Selenium/WebDriver | Hosted screenshot API |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow control | Fits browser actions orchestrated through WebDriver. | Fits capture submitted as an HTTP task; supported interactions depend on the service options. |
| Screenshot scope | Documents screenshots of the current browsing context and individual elements. | Browserless documents full-page, selector-specific, and clip-region options. |
| Readiness and lazy content | Define browser steps and readiness checks in your automation workflow. | Browserless documents wait and navigation configuration; its docs note lazy-loaded content may require scrolling before capture. |
| Browser operations | Your system manages the WebDriver-controlled workflow and its execution environment. | A provider runs browser tasks behind its API; service capabilities and limits vary. |
| Bulk performance and cost | Not established as a general winner by the cited documentation. | Not established as a general winner by the cited documentation. |
The Selenium documentation describes its screenshot function, while Browserless documents the options of its own API. Those descriptions are not a controlled comparison, and a feature listed for one product should not be assumed to be absent from another. Confirm each candidate’s current behavior against your exact capture definition.
How to evaluate either option for bulk capture
- Build a representative URL set. Include the types of pages that actually occur in your workload, such as JavaScript-heavy pages and long pages if you need to capture them. Include the authentication and interaction cases that matter.
- Fix the capture definition. Use the same target URLs, viewport, output format, and scope—viewport, full page, or element—for every candidate. Specify what readiness means, including how delayed content and lazy-loaded images should be handled.
- Set success criteria before running. Decide what makes an image valid: expected page content present, correct dimensions and format, and no capture of an error or incomplete state. Record failures as well as successful outputs.
- Run at the workload you expect to operate. Compare the required concurrency and throughput on the same URL mix, then inspect how each approach handles session lifecycle, retries, and errors. A small test can reveal integration fit, but do not treat it as a general benchmark.
- Compare total cost using current figures. Include service charges where applicable and the engineering and operational effort of running the browser workflow. The documentation cited here does not establish current comparable prices, a bulk throughput winner, or a reliability winner.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want capture through an HTTP request instead of setting up a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and details.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether the capture ran before the page or its content was ready. Define a readiness condition suited to the page rather than assuming navigation alone means the required content is present. For lazy-loaded content, scrolling may be needed before capture; Browserless explicitly notes this in its screenshot documentation.

The output captures the wrong area
Confirm whether the job is configured for the viewport, the full page, a particular element, or a clip region. These scopes are not interchangeable. Selenium documents current-context and element screenshots; Browserless documents full-page, selector, and clip-region options.
Some URLs fail while others work
Keep a per-URL record of the requested capture, outcome, and error rather than treating a batch as a single success or failure. Separate page-level problems from session or service errors, then retry only cases where a retry is appropriate. The cited product documentation does not define a universal retry policy.
Bulk runs do not meet the expected throughput
Do not infer capacity from a single capture or a provider’s managed-service model. Re-run with the concurrency, URL mix, and output requirements you expect in production, and account for failures and retries in the usable-capture rate.
What the available documentation does—and does not—settle
The official documentation establishes that Selenium has WebDriver screenshot capability, and that Browserless offers a hosted screenshot endpoint with documented capture and readiness options. It does not provide a controlled comparison of either approach, comparable prices, service-level commitments, or verified bulk throughput figures. Those outcomes depend on workload and implementation, so a representative evaluation is necessary before committing to an architecture.
