1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo compare Chrome Headless screenshots reliably, capture the same page or element under repeatable conditions, wait for the page to settle, compare the result with a reviewed baseline, and inspect the changed regions before deciding whether to accept the change. Playwright Test provides integrated screenshot assertions; Puppeteer can capture screenshots that you compare with a tool suited to your test stack.
Choose the comparison approach
The best fit depends on your existing browser-test setup and how you want to review changes. The cited project documentation does not establish a universally best option.
| Approach | What it provides | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | Creates a reference screenshot on an initial run and compares later captures with it. Its screenshot assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with the expectation. It also exposes comparison tolerance settings. | Use it when your project already runs Playwright Test and you want baseline comparison integrated with the test workflow. Playwright visual comparisons; PageAssertions; SnapshotAssertions. |
| Puppeteer capture plus a comparison tool | Puppeteer documents screenshots of a page and of a specific element. Its screenshots guide does not prescribe a comparison library or threshold. | Use it when Puppeteer is already part of your test stack; choose a comparison method that suits your review process. Puppeteer screenshots. |
| Chromium project pixel testing | Chromium documents comparing screenshots with approved images using Skia Gold and cautions against capturing elements likely to change independently. | Consider this project-oriented guidance when working in a Chromium testing context; it may be more setup than an ordinary website repository needs. Chromium pixel tests. |
Build a repeatable screenshot comparison
-
Choose what to capture
Decide whether the test should cover the viewport, the full page, or one component. Page-wide captures reveal layout changes across the document; an element capture narrows the test to a component. Puppeteer documents both
Page.screenshot()andElementHandle.screenshot()for these scopes. -
Fix the rendering conditions
Keep the browser build and host environment consistent between baseline creation and later runs. Also control the viewport, scale, fonts, settings, and test data where practical. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors (Playwright visual comparisons).

Make page state predictable
Wait for relevant content and fonts, and account for animations or asynchronous updates before capture. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last one with the expectation (PageAssertions). That helps with stabilization, but it does not make inherently changing content suitable for a baseline test.
Omit or otherwise handle volatile areas, such as content expected to change on its own. Chromium’s pixel-test guidance explicitly warns against capturing elements likely to change independently (Chromium pixel tests).

Create and review the baseline
With Playwright Test, the initial run creates the reference screenshot; later runs compare captures against it. Treat a baseline update as a reviewed change: a mismatch alone does not tell you whether the page or the stored expectation is correct.
-
Set a deliberate tolerance
Playwright exposes maximum differing-pixel, maximum difference-ratio, and perceptual color-threshold controls (SnapshotAssertions). Begin with strict comparison for controlled content. If repeated benign rendering noise causes failures, inspect it first, then adjust tolerance to match the test’s purpose. The documented default threshold of 0.2 is a configuration default, not a universal recommendation.

Inspect before accepting
Review the changed areas and check whether they correspond to the intended code change. For text or behavior, add a separate content or functional assertion: a pixel diff shows visual differences, but does not explain their meaning.
Compare with Playwright Test
In a Playwright Test project, use a screenshot assertion to establish and check the baseline. A minimal example is:
Rank #4
- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the test once to create the reference image, then review and commit that baseline with the test. Subsequent runs compare new captures with the reference. Keep test data and rendering conditions stable so a failure is more likely to signal a meaningful visual change.
For a focused component, use a locator screenshot assertion rather than comparing the entire page:

Puppeteer supplies capture methods rather than prescribing a baseline-diff workflow. Capture the page or a selected element, then pass the image to the comparison method already used by your project. This example shows capture only; it deliberately does not assume a comparison package:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
const header = await page.$('header');
if (!header) throw new Error('Could not find header');
await header.screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The viewport and wait condition in this example are choices, not universal settings: match them to the page and keep them fixed for both baseline and current captures. See Puppeteer’s screenshots guide for capture options.
Handle common comparison failures
- Images differ on every run: Check whether the host OS, browser version, headless mode, viewport, scale, fonts, settings, hardware, or power source differs. Align the environment and test data before relaxing the threshold.
- The page is captured before it is ready: Wait for the specific content or fonts the test depends on and account for asynchronous updates. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for consecutive captures to match, but volatile content can remain unsuitable for comparison.
- A component-only test fails because the element is missing: Confirm the selector matches the current page state and that the relevant content has loaded before capturing. Puppeteer’s element screenshot requires a located element.
- The diff reports harmless visual noise: Inspect the changed pixels and identify the source first. Then decide whether to remove the volatile region from the comparison or adjust Playwright’s documented tolerance controls for the use case.
- A baseline update appears to fix the test: Review the image change against the intended UI change before accepting it. Updating the reference without that check can preserve an unintended regression.
- The screenshot passes but text or interaction is wrong: Add separate assertions for the expected content or behavior; visual comparison alone is not a functional test.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns an image or PDF; for visual regression, you can save the response and compare it with your own reviewed baseline and diff tooling. This API call captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
