For reliable screenshots of sites with consent management platforms (CMPs), make each capture’s browser environment and consent state explicit. Set a fixed viewport, device scale factor, locale, timezone, color scheme, and reduced-motion preference; use a fresh isolated context for a first-visit banner and a separate context for a saved or newly chosen consent state. Then wait for a site-specific readiness condition and choose viewport, full-page, or element capture to match what you need to inspect.
These settings make scenarios repeatable; they do not guarantee pixel-identical output across different browser versions, operating systems, fonts, or site behavior. Playwright’s documentation covers the controls, but CMP cookie names and persistence rules are specific to each site.
Set a reproducible Playwright baseline
Use one explicit configuration for a named screenshot scenario rather than relying on whatever defaults happen to be active. This Playwright Test configuration is a desktop, English (UK), London, light-mode example:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
browserName: 'chromium',
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
locale: 'en-GB',
timezoneId: 'Europe/London',
colorScheme: 'light',
reducedMotion: 'reduce',
serviceWorkers: 'allow',
},
});
These values are an example, not a universal best profile. Substitute the audience’s actual locale, timezone, viewport or device profile, and color scheme. Locale affects navigator.language, the Accept-Language request header, and formatting such as dates and numbers. Timezone emulation applies to the browser, not the test runner. Playwright supports light and dark color schemes and reduce or no-preference for reduced motion. Service workers are allowed by default; keep that behavior unless the test is specifically about blocking them. See the Playwright emulation guide, TestOptions API, and BrowserType API.
For visual comparisons, also keep the Playwright package and browser version, operating system or container image, fonts, and test data fixed. Record the configuration and browser version with each screenshot; context emulation controls browser inputs but does not normalize every source of rendering variation.

Model consent as separate test scenarios
A screenshot shows one browser state. Do not reuse a profile and assume that a banner’s disappearance proves the site saved a choice. Use a separate context for each meaningful consent state:
- First visit, banner visible: create a fresh isolated context with no saved cookies or storage state. Wait for the CMP UI and assert that the expected banner is visible before capturing.
- Returning visitor: seed a separate context with consent data produced by the site’s actual flow, or with an authorized saved storage state for that site. Verify the resulting state in the page.
- Preference center or selected categories: interact with the real CMP, save the choice, and capture the resulting UI or page. Keep distinct test cases for choices that matter, such as accepting all versus selecting categories.
Playwright’s BrowserContext API provides isolated sessions and cookie and storage-state controls. Its addInitScript runs after document creation but before page scripts; it can help establish a controlled JavaScript environment, but it is not a universal replacement for the CMP flow. Cookie names, local-storage keys, iframe behavior, and the meaning of stored values vary by site. Inspect and validate the target site’s behavior rather than guessing a cookie key.
Choose the capture scope and pixel scale
Playwright can capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page. Match the capture to the question being tested, and keep the scale consistent across comparisons. The official Playwright Screenshots documentation describes these capture options.

| Option | Use it for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The visible, above-the-fold page state; this is the default scope. | Useful for checking banner placement and overlay coverage at a fixed viewport. |
| Full page | The entire scrollable page. | Use fullPage: true. Avoid combining it with an element target. Sticky elements or content that changes during scrolling can make this differ from a normal viewport capture. |
| Element | A CMP container or other focused component. | Capture a locator or selector; include the surrounding page only if that context is part of the question. |
scale: 'css' |
CSS-pixel output. | This is the documented default and is often appropriate for stable visual comparisons. |
scale: 'device' |
Output rendered at the device pixel ratio. | Choose this when high-resolution, device-pixel output is required; use the same choice for every comparison. |
| Image format | A downstream tool or workflow that expects a particular format. | Set PNG, JPEG, or WebP explicitly when the consumer requires it. |
For example, a viewport capture can be saved with await page.screenshot({ path: 'first-visit.png', type: 'png' }); a full-page capture uses await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true }). For an element, use a locator’s screenshot method, such as await page.locator('[role="dialog"]').screenshot({ path: 'consent-dialog.png' }), after verifying that selector matches the intended CMP on the target site.
Wait for the page and CMP to be ready
Wait for evidence that the state you intend to capture exists—not merely for navigation to begin. A useful readiness signal might be the CMP container becoming visible, a known API response completing, or a loading indicator disappearing. If fonts, images, or asynchronous content affect the result, include their readiness in the scenario. The right condition depends on the site, so assertions should target its actual UI or behavior.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Reduced-motion emulation can help when the site honors that media preference and the test goal calls for it. A fixed sleep may be a last-mile workaround for a known external delay, but it should not be the sole readiness condition: it can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Avoid disabling JavaScript for ordinary CMP screenshots because consent interfaces commonly rely on scripts. Likewise, block service workers only when deliberately testing that behavior; either change alters the scenario.
Vary one browser input at a time
When investigating a difference, use a small scenario matrix rather than changing several settings at once. Playwright documents context emulation for locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme, as well as device profiles and viewport options in its emulation guide.

|---|---|---|
| Consent persistence | Fresh context; saved consent; changed preference | Whether the banner, preference center, or post-choice state appears. |
| Locale and location | Language/locale; timezone; geolocation if the site uses it | Banner copy, dates, regional prompts, or site content. Whether a particular CMP responds is site-specific. |
| Viewport and device | Fixed desktop; named mobile profile; target viewport | Breakpoints, text wrapping, overlay coverage, and visible area. |
| Color and motion | Light or dark mode; reduced motion on or off | Styles and motion-sensitive transition states. |
| Capture and output | Viewport, full page, or element; CSS or device scale; chosen image format | Image dimensions, context, and comparison behavior. |
Run a minimal capture workflow
- Pin the environment. Fix the project and browser versions, host environment, and relevant fonts. Name the scenario, for example
first-visit-desktop-en-GBoraccepted-consent-mobile-fr-FR. - Create an isolated context. Apply the scenario’s explicit viewport, locale, timezone, color scheme, motion, and consent state.
- Navigate and wait. Use a page-specific readiness condition that indicates the desired page and CMP state are available.
- Assert, then capture. Check that the expected banner or post-consent state is present, and capture the viewport, element, or full page at a consistent scale.
- Keep diagnostics with the artifact. When investigating nondeterministic differences, save a trace or other diagnostics alongside the image and retain the exact configuration and browser version.
Playwright provides the context and screenshot controls, but it cannot supply a universal CMP assertion: the right check depends on each site’s implementation. See the BrowserContext API and Screenshots documentation.

- The consent banner does not appear: the context may contain cookies or storage from an earlier run, or the site may not show the banner for that region. Use a genuinely fresh context, check the site’s regional conditions, and assert visibility before capture.
- The banner disappears but the returning-state capture is wrong: disappearance alone does not establish that consent persisted. Complete the site’s real save flow, inspect the resulting storage state, and load it in a separate context.
- The screenshot is clipped or the wrong part of the page: check the viewport dimensions and whether the intended target is viewport, full page, or an element. Do not combine full-page capture with an element target.
- Images, fonts, or the banner look different between runs: add readiness checks for relevant resources, fix browser and host versions and fonts, and record the scenario. A fixed sleep alone cannot guarantee readiness.
- Locale, date, or formatting is unexpected: set the browser locale and timezone explicitly. Remember that timezone emulation changes the browser, not the test runner.
- The site behaves differently after blocking scripts or service workers: those settings change site behavior. Leave JavaScript enabled and keep service workers allowed unless their absence is the test condition.
- A configuration option is rejected or unavailable: check the installed Playwright version and its matching API documentation; options can vary by release.

FAQ
How do I take a full-page screenshot in Playwright?
Use await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). Check whether sticky elements or content that loads while scrolling changes the result.
How do I make a cookie consent banner appear in Playwright screenshots?
Open a fresh isolated context without saved cookies or storage, navigate to the site, and verify the banner is visible before capturing. The site’s own region and behavior may affect whether it appears.
Does Playwright guarantee pixel-identical screenshots?
No. Explicit browser settings control relevant inputs, but browser version, operating system, fonts, and page behavior can still affect rendering. Pin and record the environment for comparisons.
