Here is the release context, what changed in Selenium 4, and how to check the version you should use.
What does “Selenium 91” mean?
The Selenium project’s official release information does not identify a version 91. The title wording therefore cannot be treated as a release number. The latest stable version shown on the project’s downloads page is Selenium 4.49.0; version numbers and release dates can change, so check that page when choosing a version.

What is the latest Selenium version?
The official downloads page lists version 4.49.0 as stable for Java, .NET, Python, Ruby and JavaScript, and lists Selenium Server/Grid at 4.49.0. The page gives September 9, 2026 as the release date for the client bindings. Consult the page directly for the live status, installation instructions and any later releases.

Selenium also offers nightly builds. The project warns that they may contain bugs or undocumented changes, so stable releases are the safer default unless you specifically need to test unreleased work.
What changed when Selenium 4 launched?
Selenium 4.0.0 was announced on October 13, 2021, for Java, .NET, Python, Ruby and JavaScript. The maintainers described the move from 3.x as intended to be a “drop-in” upgrade, with public APIs kept as stable as possible. That was an aim, not a guarantee that every existing test suite would upgrade without changes: code relying on deprecated or internal APIs could encounter friction. The project’s Selenium 4 announcement gives the original release context.
Rank #2
The Selenium release archive shows ongoing 4.x releases after the initial 2021 launch. The current 4.49.0 listing is a later point in that series, not a separate “Selenium 91” release.

Historical Alpha 7 notes in the Python changelog record three changes: support for Python versions below 3.7 was removed, desired_capabilities was deprecated in favor of capabilities, and DevTools API support was added. These are notes for that alpha release, not a complete account of Selenium 4 or a statement of current requirements across every language binding. See the Python changelog for the historical entry and later context.
Should you upgrade to Selenium 4?
If your project is still on Selenium 3, the 4.0 announcement’s compatibility intent is a useful starting point, but review your own code and dependencies before upgrading. Pay particular attention to deprecated or internal APIs and to the binding-specific upgrade notes for the version you plan to install.
- Confirm what is installed. Check the language binding and Selenium Server/Grid versions used by your project rather than relying on a generic “Selenium version” label.
- Read the current release information. Compare your installed version with the stable release and consult the downloads page and relevant language changelog.
- Search for deprecated or internal APIs. For Python code, historical examples include
desired_capabilities; verify the migration guidance applicable to your installed version rather than assuming an alpha note describes all current behavior. - Upgrade and run your test suite in a controlled environment. Investigate failures individually; the 2021 goal of stable public APIs does not rule out issues from dependencies, private interfaces or changes made since your current version.
- Prefer stable builds for routine work. Use nightly only when you need unreleased changes and can accommodate bugs or undocumented behavior.
Capture a browser screenshot with a local browser setup
Selenium is useful when a screenshot is one part of a browser test or when you need to interact with a page before capture. The following Python example uses Selenium WebDriver with Chrome. Install the Python binding with python -m pip install selenium and have a compatible Chrome browser available. Selenium’s driver management behavior can depend on your setup and environment; consult the official documentation if driver startup fails.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,1000")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
driver.save_screenshot("shot.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
This captures the current viewport, not necessarily the entire page. A fixed window size makes the viewport reproducible, but content below the fold may not be included. For full-page capture or page-specific interactions, use the browser capabilities appropriate to your test and verify the resulting image.

If your goal is simply to request a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For a simple image capture, use this cURL call; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Common Selenium upgrade and screenshot problems
- Code using
desired_capabilitiesraises a warning or fails. That argument was deprecated in the historical Python Alpha 7 notes in favor ofcapabilities. Check the migration guidance for the version actually installed and update the code accordingly. - Python installation or runtime compatibility is unclear. The below-3.7 support change cited here belongs to Alpha 7; do not use it as a current compatibility chart. Check the current binding documentation and the Python changelog for the release you are installing.
- Chrome does not start under WebDriver. Confirm Chrome is installed and that driver setup is supported in your environment. Consult Selenium’s current documentation and inspect the startup error; the historical release notes do not establish a universal driver-management procedure.
- The screenshot omits content below the fold.
save_screenshotcaptures the viewport in the example. Set an appropriate viewport or use a verified full-page capture approach for your browser and test requirements. - A nightly build behaves unexpectedly. Nightly builds can include bugs or undocumented changes. Reproduce the issue on a stable release before treating it as a regression in the stable project.
Frequently asked questions
Is Selenium 91 the same as Selenium 4.9.1?
The supplied official project listings do not establish that interpretation. Check the exact version shown by your package manager or project configuration and compare it with Selenium’s release pages.
Does Selenium 4 support JavaScript?
Yes. JavaScript is among the five language bindings named in the Selenium 4.0.0 announcement and on the current downloads page.
