For a maintainable regression suite that must run across environments and scale, Selenium points users toward WebDriver instead.
What Selenium IDE does
Selenium describes its broader project as “an umbrella project for a range of tools and libraries that enable and support the automation of web browsers.” IDE is the approachable, record-and-playback part of that ecosystem: you interact with a site in a browser, inspect the resulting steps, and replay them as a test.

That makes IDE a practical starting point, not a guarantee that a recorded test is robust. Recording captures a workflow; you still need to review whether its steps express the intended checks and whether they remain dependable as the application changes.
How a recorded test becomes useful
- Record a workflow. Perform the relevant actions in the web application so IDE can capture them as test steps.
- Review and edit the steps. Check that the recorded actions and checks reflect the behavior you actually want to verify.
- Replay the test. Use playback to reproduce the workflow and see whether it still behaves as expected.
- Choose where it belongs next. Keep a focused quick check in IDE, or export and integrate it into code-based automation if the test needs broader maintenance or execution.
The current project repository describes an Electron application, a playback runtime, a Node runner, an experimental CLI, and exporters from .side projects to C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. When to choose IDE and when to move to WebDriver

These are not mutually exclusive choices. IDE can help you sketch or reproduce a test, while WebDriver is the more suitable destination when that test becomes part of a durable suite.
What changed in Selenium IDE 4
The project moved away from its earlier browser-extension model to an Electron application. The maintainers’ v4 explanation describes several reasons: extension workflows made browser-level tasks such as handling alerts or clearing cookies difficult; adding behavior across local and remote playback was complex; browser-extension security changes increased maintenance work; and Manifest V3 restricted commands central to the older design.

The wiki’s discussion of Manifest V2 being removed from stores in January 2024 was written in 2023 as historical context for the change, not as a current browser-policy update. The v4 discussion is an explanation of the architecture shift, not a promise about a future roadmap. Limitations to check before depending on a test
- File-system access: The Selenium IDE FAQ says a browser extension cannot access the file system. Do not assume extension-era workflows can automate local files like a desktop application.
- Browser-level behavior: The v4 maintainers identify browser-level features and custom behavior as constraints in the older extension architecture. Confirm that the actions you need work in your installed version.
- Version and browser compatibility: An older documentation page’s browser list is not a current compatibility matrix. Check the current repository release information for your IDE version and target browser.
- Test durability: A recorded sequence is not automatically a production-ready regression test. Review its steps and move to WebDriver when reliability, maintainability, or scale becomes important.
