If YouTube Live rejects your FFmpeg stream, first check that FFmpeg is using the current stream key and the exact ingest URL and protocol shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Only after the encoder connects should you tune video, audio, bitrate, or keyframe settings; those affect stream health, but they do not fix an invalid credential or unreachable server.
Diagnose the error in the right order
Separate a connection or authentication failure from a stream that reaches YouTube but has a configuration warning. Change one thing at a time, then check the encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health message again.

- FFmpeg cannot start or YouTube rejects the stream: verify the stream key, ingest address, and protocol.
- YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health: use the reported codec, bitrate, frame-rate, or keyframe issue to choose a targeted change.
- The stream connects but is unstable or falls below its target bitrate: check upload capacity and network contention.
Check the current YouTube stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the current stream key.
- Update the key in the FFmpeg output configuration, wherever your command or script stores it.
- Start FFmpeg again and check whether YouTube now receives the stream.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not post it in a command, screenshot, or support request. If you reset it, update every encoder that uses the previous key. YouTube’s instructions for retrieving and using a key are in Manage live stream settings.

Verify the ingest URL and RTMP or RTMPS protocol
Compare FFmpeg’s destination with the ingest URL shown for this stream in Live Control Room. The URL and key are separate settings in YouTube’s setup flow, although an FFmpeg command may combine the ingest address and stream name in its output URL. The exact syntax depends on the command you are already using, so do not replace it with a guessed example.
- Using RTMP: use the RTMP address supplied in the stream settings.
- Using RTMPS: use the RTMPS address supplied for the stream; do not assume an RTMP address is interchangeable.
- Seeing an SSL or connection-timeout error: check that the URL uses the intended RTMPS protocol and that the encoder can reach the supplied host and port. YouTube’s help guidance suggests trying port 443 for some SSL errors; use the address and requirements applicable to your stream rather than inventing a server hostname.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted connection and troubleshooting for SSL and timeout problems. The LiveStreams API documentation describes the ingestion address and stream name as distinct fields.

Check FFmpeg’s media settings after it connects
Do not treat every stream-health warning as a stream-key error. Once YouTube is receiving the stream, compare the output settings with the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder recommendations. The correct bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.
Codec and rate control
- YouTube’s current recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the outgoing video bitrate, as recommended by YouTube.
- Check YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate instead of copying a value intended for a different combination.
Resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
- Choose an output resolution and frame rate that match the intended stream and the corresponding YouTube recommendation; the listed frame-rate support goes up to 60 fps.
- YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. In FFmpeg, check the encoder’s keyframe or GOP settings and confirm the resulting interval rather than assuming a setting name has the same effect across encoders.
- YouTube’s advanced guidance also covers square pixels and progressive scan. Check these if stream health identifies a format or scan issue; they are not a general remedy for a rejected key.
For scale, YouTube’s published table lists 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. At 720p/30 fps it lists 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific combinations, not universal requirements. Consult the full encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations before selecting a value.

Use YouTube’s stream-health message to target the fix
When a stream reaches YouTube, open its stream-health or configuration warning and fix the named issue rather than changing unrelated settings. YouTube’s health categories distinguish problems such as bitrate, frame rate, codec, GOP or keyframe interval, multiple streams, and primary/backup mismatches.
- Audio codec warning: check that the audio output is AAC or MP3.
- Keyframe or GOP warning: set the interval to 2 seconds where possible and keep it at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Multiple-stream warning: inspect whether the output contains more than one audio or video stream where YouTube expects one.
- Primary/backup mismatch: align the primary and backup feeds’ frame rates and keyframe intervals.
- Bitrate or frame-rate warning: compare the actual output to the recommendation for its codec, resolution, and frame rate.
The issue categories and recommended remedies are documented in Google’s Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources.

Check upload bandwidth if the stream is unstable
If FFmpeg connects but the measured bitrate is inconsistent or the stream repeatedly degrades, compare available upload capacity with the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the bitrate requirement. Other devices, uploads, or network traffic can reduce the bandwidth actually available to FFmpeg.
If you send both primary and backup feeds, include the bitrate of both in the bandwidth calculation. YouTube’s streaming tips cover upload capacity and bandwidth headroom.

Troubleshoot by the symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg starts, but YouTube rejects the stream or reports an invalid key | Old, reset, or mistyped stream key | Copy the current key from Live Control Room, replace the stored value, and retry. Update every encoder if the key was reset. |
| SSL error or RTMPS connection timed out | Wrong protocol or ingest address, unreachable host or port, or RTMPS connection problem | Compare the destination to the current stream settings; use the supplied RTMPS address when using RTMPS. For some SSL errors, YouTube suggests trying port 443. |
| YouTube receives the stream but reports a configuration issue | Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, multiple streams, or primary/backup mismatch | Use the specific health message to select the setting to inspect, then check YouTube’s matching recommendation. |
| Stream connects but is unstable or falls below the intended bitrate | Insufficient or shared upload bandwidth | Measure available upload capacity under normal network use, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and count both feeds if using primary and backup. |
Protect the key when asking for help
If these checks do not resolve the problem, share the exact FFmpeg error and the command’s structure with the key removed. Redact the key everywhere it appears, including screenshots and logs; include whether the destination is RTMP or RTMPS and the stream-health message if YouTube receives the feed. There is no single safe command-line correction to give without knowing the existing command, operating system, FFmpeg build, and exact error.
